1 October 2017 Merrimack Valley Quilting Guild Celebrating 38 years of encouraging the art of quilting in the Merrimack Valley. MVQ was established in EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE President: Liz Swan Vice President Mary Wilkes Secretary: Kim Blanchard Treasurer AP: Gail Forthoffer Treasurer AR: Heather Sheilds PR ES I D ENT S MES S AG E Wow! What a great show! Congratulations to Ann Hockmeyer, Diane Kelley, the entire Quilt Show Committee and all the volunteers for making it a big success. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time, talents and donations. Everywhere I go, people are talking about how great it was. Your success is well deserved. It s time for the next Quilt Show Chair to take over. Do you know someone who would be great in this position? We also need a Program Chair for next season. Both positions are an opportunity for you to become involved in guild activities and establish new friendships. As committee chair, you can impart your ideas as well as work with guild members who have experience getting the job done. There are so many people who are waiting and wanting to help our next superstars. Could that person be you? We have some exciting meetings coming. The next general meeting is October 19 th with Christine Wickert, Award Winning Quilt Artist. Be sure to come early for Social Hour and Sew and Know. There is no meeting in November. And our holiday extravaganza is December 7 th organized by Gail Wozniak. Please say hello to new members and guests at the meetings. You never know when a stranger might become your new best friend. The next board meeting is scheduled for November 15 th starting at 7 pm at West Congregational Church in Haverhill. All guild members are welcome to attend. As always, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, feel free to contact me. Elizabeth Swan, President To reach any committee, please address correspondence to MVQ Guild PO Box 566 Haverhill. MA Newsletter items must be in to me by the 1st of each month: Pat.lucey@verizon.net October 19th Christine Wickert- Trunk Show Learning from the Masters- Continuing the Journey October 21st_ Silk Applique Pillow

3 This month we welcome Christine Wickert, a silk appliqué artist with her trunk show entitled Learning from the Masters- Continuing the Journey. Her workshop is a Silk Floral Applique Pillow it s gorgeous. The supply list is attached and will be also be available at the meeting. If you would like her kit, please let us know when you sign up. Her quilt, "My Version of a Persian" will be part of the New England's exhibit called Gilding the Lily: Embroidered Quilts from the Past and Present" from August 31 - December 30, I hope you can find time to visit the Museum and see her work. December is our annual Christmas party and promises to be a great time, chaired by Gail Wozniak!!!!! You won t want to miss it! Make sure you re working with on your brown bag gift with the fabric Gail handed out in the spring if you didn t get yours, please see her. Donations may be brought for Newborns in Need. A copy of the entire year s agenda is attached and program booklets are available at the meeting. Sign-ups are open for ALL classes so be sure to sign up early! PLEASE note that payment must be made at the time of sign-up and is non-refundable. I am accountable to the teacher for a head count weeks before the workshop and he/she may be preparing kits as well as class materials so an accurate count is important. Last minute cancellations and refunds are not fair to the teacher or to the Guild. Please keep in mind we are paying very low workshop fees ($25) for great and expensive teachers and any out-ofpocket money comes from Guild funds. Most workshops are $500 and above, more for the high end teachers. Please see me if you have questions. Please also note that member-led workshops are only $10 and anyone that overpaid in September will be refunded this month thanks! As mentioned at one of our past meetings, international quilter and speaker Edyta Sitar will be with us in April of It seems like a long way off, but it s the earliest she is available! She will be amazing and well worth the wait! I am also looking for a Program Co-Chair and/or Workshop Coordinator. It is all too much for one person! I have agreed to continue to book the speakers for next year ( ) but need someone to handle the workshops. After that someone will need to take over the position(s). Please consider this most important job that is a big part of making our Guild so attractive! A special thank you to those of you who have stepped up to help out hosting workshops and thank you to Cathy Harnisch and Mary Stobbs who are helping at the registration table. I am so appreciative! Thanks Ronni Supply List for Silk Applique Floral Pillow Pattern only - $10 OR Kit which includes pattern and all materials), if desired, - $30 Freezer Paper One sheet (12 x 18) of parchment paper Ironing surface Sharp #2 pencils (I like mechanical pencils) Little craft iron Small sharp scissors (preferably a serrated one) Big fabric scissors) Paper scissors Paint brush (1/4 inch) Perfect Circles by Karen Kay Buckley (Optional) Perfect Ovals by Karen Kay Buckley (Optional) FINE line water-erasable marking pen Applique needles Applique needles Regular sewing needles for basting Quilting thread (any color) Basting thread (any color) 100 weight silk thread (YLI or Kimono silk) to match silk fabrics Sharp think silk pins SILK FABRIC LIST (included if you purchase the kit) 5 x 5 for vase 10 x 10 for aster petals 10 x 10 for daisy petals 5 x 10 for aster buds and daisy centers 1 fat eighth for vines and leaves Beads and Embroidery floss

At the Board Meeting I stated that if no-one stepped up I would book the speakers again if we were stuck but would still need workshop help. We are in need of a Program Chair for next year. Thanks, Ronni I will be taking photos of members at the October meeting for our Photo Roster. I'll be taking photos of new members and any members who would like a new picture of themselves for the Roster. Members can also me photo if they have one that they particularly like. Thanks. 9 COMFORT QUILTS About Us: Community Crossroads is one of ten non- profit corporations designated as area agencies by the state of New Hampshire. In this role, we are responsible for supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and their families from birth to elder years as well as adults with acquired brain disorders. Originally established in 1979 as Region 10 Client Management, the agency has grown over the past thirty years to serve over 850 individuals and families in eleven towns in southern New Hampshire. Until recently known as Region Ten Community Support Services, Inc., we have become an integral part of our local communities through fundraising activities, civic involvement, and partnership with local businesses. Mission: Our mission is to provide people in need of long term supports, either through age or disability, with the information, guidance, support and advocacy they need to remain in their chosen homes and live full, independent lives. Who we serve: As one of ten non- profit area agencies designated by the State of New Hampshire, Community Crossroads coordinates supports for over 850 individuals and their families in eleven towns in southeastern New Hampshire. These individuals include: Infants and toddlers from birth to age 3 with developmental delays or disabilities. School age children from ages 3 to 21 with developmental disabilities. Adults with developmental disabilities from age 21 to elder years. Adults with acquired brain disorders which occur before age 60 but do not meet the definition of a develop Message from Carol (Accounting Coordinator) & Tammy (ESS Coordinator): Community Crossroads, formerly Region 10 Community Support Services, has been serving families and individuals with developmental disabilities and brain injury since (Our website address is: We also serve those with chronic illness, including the elderly. One of our areas of service is providing support to families with children from birth to age 3 who have special needs. Some babies have spent many days/weeks/months in the hospital, which is so hard on families. When our Early Supports and Services Coordinator, Tammy Dudal, first visits a baby s family, she brings with her a baby blanket crocheted by a group of us ladies during our lunch hours. These families are so very appreciative of this gesture it warms Tammy s heart as well as ours. The challenge is keeping up with the demand. There are just a very few of us who do the crocheting though we welcome all our staff and even provide crochet lessons. We have a primary Yarn Angel here as well as others who donate yarn to the Lunch Bunch Ladies. MVQ Role Quilt Angels : We will be providing quilts for ages 0 to 3. Sizes should be 36 x 44 up to 48 x 48 quilted not tied.
