1 October 2014 Merrimack Valley Quilting Guild Celebrating 35 years of encouraging the art of quilting in the Merrimack Valley. MVQ was established in PR ES I D ENT S MES S AG E I love October! I love all the beautiful colors that we re surrounded by. Our October meeting will be an opportunity to play with texture, color and fabric. Maddie and Lyn have put a great no stress playful program together for us to enjoy. The Saturday workshop is designed for you to continue with the process and make something beautiful from your new fabric! There s the beautiful travel quilt, going to the Gathering that needs volunteers. Pick up fabric at the meeting and make blocks for next year s raffle quilt. Make a charity quilt to cheer someone up. Sign up for the mystery bus trip. Go on a retreat. Make blocks to swap. Work on your challenge quilt for the quilt show and lots more! A big thanks to all for a great September meeting! There was a lot of news to share and swapping fabric was fun! Have you started making your mug rug yet? Don t forget to have it ready for the Dec. meeting. We re also going to continue with the door prizes as long as we have fat quarters. Please remember to bring a fat quarter to donate and give it to Liz or Susan when you check in. 2 This and That Sunshine Lady: Mary Jo Ray If you know of someone who needs a bit of sunshine in their life, please contact Mary Jo on her phone please! UPDATE ON MYSTERY BUS TRIP This year the board has approved that we charge $25 (non refundable) per person for the bus. A trip is being thought about for 2nd Saturday in March 2015 To make this a firm decision we need to see a probable commitment from at least people. There will be a sheet to sign at October meeting to show interest. If we do get the we will move forward otherwise we will not have a trip this year. Guests will be welcome to try to fill the bus For new members - this is an all day (usually 8-5 or so) trip to 2-3 quilt shops. We bring our lunch and eat on the bus and usually fun and games on trip. Obviously a mystery where the bus goes but good times usually had by all. Comfort Quilts We will be making quilts for the NE Rehab network. They can use twin, lap and some baby quilts. Remember: Doors open at 6:00 for socializing!!
3 From the Traveling Raffle Quilt Committee The Quilter's Gathering at the Manchester NH Radisson is November 6 (Thursday) through November 9 (Sunday) The following people signed up to work on the raffle quilt table: Note that we need help, especially, on Saturday. THURSDAY: 9:30 set up Betty Hastings, 10 to 12, Bev Valle and Lin Caiado, 12 to 2 is available, 2 to 4 Dee Morris and Jan Taylor. FRIDAY: 9:30 set up, 10 to 12 Susan Sisson, 12 to 2 Andrea Bursaw and Sue Molin, 2 to 4 Signe Kaleel and Gladis Siros, 4 to 6 Nancy Dempsey SATURDAY; 9:30 set up, 10 to 12 Ann Hockmeyer, 12 to 2 available, 2 to 4 available, 4 to 6 available. SUNDAY: 9:30 set up 10 to 12 Ann Stobb, 12 to 3 Pat Lucey and Gail Wozniac 3:00 take down the quilt Betty Hastings. Please contact Betty Hasting if you can fill one of the available dates. Raffle Quilt Thank You for the great response in taking the future raffle quilt blocks home to sew. Please finish them up and return them at the October, December or January meeting. There are more blocks that need to be finished. Please stop by our table at the back of the room, to pick up and/or drop off the blocks. Your help is greatly appreciated! 4 Held every year at the end of NH school vacation- Friday and Saturday- May 1st and 2nd at Timberlane Jr High in Plaistow Quilt judging is usually done at Merrimac Library on a Wed, Carrie Zizza is coordinating. Quilt drop-off and show set-up is Thursday,May 1st at the School. Come early as the show is also hung that day. Members are required to give 2 hours of volunteer time either before or during show. Many opportunities abound! Sign sheets are on the back table. Quilt entry forms [found on blog] are to be sent in before March 31st. You can choose to have your quilt judged by a certified judge- $3:00 per quilt. Great chance to learn from a professional! Challenge Quilts: Janice Jones is chair- make a quilt related to the Theme- Red, White and Blue- A hatchet block must be included somewhere. separately judged according to specific criteria- info on blog Quilt Show ads: Members can gather an ad from a business for our booklet - can be any type of business, not just quilt related. Letter is on blog with info you will need. Publicity: Take a few bookmarks or posters- give to friends or hang in public places in your tow.- Available on back table during meetings. Penny Raffle Table: members donate a basket, bucket, tray etc filled with new items- either quilt related or not [tea, chocolate, gardening, teddy bear etc.] Kathy Pearse is coordinating. Silent Auction: Members donate a handmade article to be auctioned off during the show. 50% of proceeds goes to maker and 50% goes to Guild fund for a new loud speaker system. White Elephant: members bring in fabric [no upholstery], patterns, buttons, lace, unwanted tools or unfinished quilts- 100% of proceeds to the guild. Kitchen: Volunteers are needed to man bake cookies to sell- donate bottled water and Diet Soda to sell. Deb Zukas is chair. Boutique: An opportunity for members to sell homemade articles,pins, bags, knit items, [quilts do not really sell], tools, books, patterns that are in excellent condition. 20% goes to guild- maker gets 80%. We are looking for someone to co-chair the silent auction with Bev Vallee. Great small job for new members and great way to meet others in guild. 4. Looking for more donations Please check your bins, closets, stash etc - ribbon for quilt show committee is still looking for the following donations- red fabrics, blue fabrics, white(or white on white), star buttons and any thin red, white or blue ribbon. Techniques will include: reverse, several freezer paper variations, machine, baste or not & working with wool. Try them all, find your favorite. $25* Thursday, April 16 th Lecture: Journeys Time travel with several MVQ quilters & their quilts. Saturday, April 18t8 Workshop: Scrap Queen Unleashed! Our own Signe Kaleel will be making us use our scraps & tame them all into submission, atleast in theory. Join Signe as she teaches us how to make beautiful scrap quilts utilizing several techniques including just going at it. Fuggly, crummie, fractured, stringy or playful.plan to use your scraps & maybe even your friends scraps. Totally addicting!! $25* Thursday, May 21th Joe Cunningham, San Francisco CA. Gladi is an appliqué & traditional quilter who is using her free time to create lovely, intricate & award winning quilts. Her wonderful use of color, design sense & her detailed workmanship bring traditional to a new & contemporary timelessness. BOOK SWAP: Literary type or GUILTY Summer reading. Add a personal note & bookmark. All lectures are on the 3rd Thursday of the month at Holy Angels Hall. All Workshops are held at the Plaistow Library on Saturday *********Note Joe Cunningham workshop is on Friday this helps us lower his cost.
7 Merrimack Valley Quilters General Meeting September 18, P.M. Ann Hockmeyer, President called the meeting to order and introduced the other new Board Members; Betty Dahlquist, V.P.; Jan Taylor, Secretary; Elaine Rando and Marianne Karp, Treasurers. Committees Needing Chairpersons: Mystery Bus Trip, Historian, and Storybook Quilts Membership: Liz Swan and Susan Sisson; 75 members were present, including 5 new members Judy Beresford, Diane Desjardin, Gail Forthoffer, Nancy Ruddock, and Tami Sullivan -- and one returning, after-a-longbreak, member Ronnie Longwell. We also welcomed 5 guests. Renewing members must have their membership dues postmarked by September 30, 2014 in order to hang their quilt(s) in the May 2015 show. Comfort Quilts: V.P. Betty Dahlquist announced that the Northeast Rehab network will be the recipient of our quilts this year. They need mostly adult twin size, some children s, some wheelchair lap size, and some baby quilts. Raffle Quilt Travel: Betty Hastings reported that the quilt top was shown at the M.V.Q. show in May, and after quilting by Cathy Harnisch, was taken to the Mancuso World show in Manchester and Mann s Orchard in Methuen, under the leadership of Cathy. The quilt has earned over $900 to date. It will be going to The Quilters Gathering in Manchester Nov.6 Nov. 9, 2014, where ticket salespeople are needed. Raffle Quilt Creation: Bev Valle and Lin Caiado will be making the quilt from blocks that all of us can piece. For a $5.00 deposit members will be given fabric and directions for 2 blocks. When the blocks are returned, by the January meeting, the money will be refunded. 162 blocks are needed. Quilt Show: May 1 and 2, 2015: Helen Weymouth announced the theme of next year s show as Celebrate America; the Red, White, and Blue, and 35 Years of M.V.Q. Challenge Quilt rules are on our website. Deb Zukas (and her family) will manage the Kitchen for her sixth and last year; she s looking for an apprentice for this year, to replace her in UFO Challenge: Ann and Mary Stobbs; get out those UFOs that you started before Sept and challenge yourself to finish them by the May 2015 meeting. Sign them up for one $2.00 fee, before Jan. 2015, and you could be the lucky winner of everyone s fees. The rules and entry form are on our website under Projects. Prize Ribbons: Carol Sullivan needs us to donate red, white, or blue fabrics and narrow ribbons. Next Quilt Show meeting; Monday Sept. 29, 2014, 7P.M. at Plaistow Library. Mystery Quilt : Barbara Callard and Roseanne Ricketson left fabric requirements lists on the front table, and directions will be posted under Projects on the MVQ website. Sunshine Lady: Mary Jo Ray is ready to serve; please call her if you know of any guild members who could use some sympathy or sunshine. (Her will be unreliable.) Show and Tell: There were many beautiful quilts finished since our last meeting, several using last year s Mystery Quilt directions. Programs: Lyn Grenier and Maddie Burke announced that this year s theme will be Conservation; let s make a dent, and shared what they ve planned for the rest of the year, including the roll of the toilet paper rolls. This Saturday s workshop will be an open sew with a special invitation to our new members. Kennebunk Retreat: Kathy Pearse; the money is due by the end of Sept. for the Nov retreat; applications are on the website under Quilt Retreats. Treasurer Layne Rando gave the financial report and reminded us that Expense Vouchers, and instructions, are on the website under Resources/Forms. The Monthly Raffle was won by Rosemary Bray; the Door Prizes by Barbara Callard, Beth Wood, and Lisa McCarthy; and the Free M.V.Q. Membership for this year by Mary Ginn. Ann H. asked that each of us to donate Fat Quarters at every meeting, to be used for door prizes. The Ice Cream Social was a big hit with everyone! Next General Meeting: Thurs.
