President s Note North Parish Quilters Hello Quilting Friends, I often discuss teaching when I am among my friends and family since educating my students and passing on knowledge is a subject near and dear to my heart. I know sooner or later, I ll be learning something new, especially when I hear of an innovative technique or gadget. One reason this guild is so important is because of the wonderful opportunities presented to our members that focus on education. It was so nice to have Kathie Beltz last month who shared her knowledge of the Studio 180 tools and patterns. There is a lot of information out there and we all benefit when someone is willing to share! This month our speaker Linda Pearl is sure to give us even more inspiration and I m certain she will have a few new ideas too! If you have found something special and worth sharing, please let me know and we can include it at a future meeting. As we gather around the Thanksgiving table this month, we will give thanks for so many things. Our safe homes, good health, good friends and our families are sure to be on the list. I will include on my thankful for list, all of the wonderful, kind and giving people of our guild. Thank you for your contributions and support. 2 Program for November 12, 2014 This month, we will have Linda Pearl, also known as Patchwork Pearl, giving a lecture to the guild on "Why do all my quilts look the same?" Linda has been a quiltmaker for the better part of 20 years. While working full time, and being a wife to Mike and a mom to Chris and Andy, she fit in quilting as time allowed while raising her family. She found companionship in the membership she held in two guilds and has to this day a particular affinity for Challenges. Linda s work has been exhibited in several guild shows throughout New Hampshire including A Quilter s Gathering in Nashua, NH in the Linda invites you to visit her website From Linda s website: Are you locked into your comfort zone, making variations of the same color palette over and over, because you are not sure where to go next? In this lecture, we ll explore the basics of color theory, and help to discover the quickest end to boredom you ve ever seen. I ll also help you to see whether a fabric in your favorite palette has too much yellow or too much gray for what you re looking for. I ll also explain the secret color that makes almost every quilt pop. Our vendor this month will be Maureen from Marketplace Quilts in Salem, MA. Maureen is a good friend to North Parish and we are always excited to see her offerings. If you have not turned your block in just yet, please make sure you do so sooner than later; we are trying to get this done for the December Meeting. Remember you can turn them into Laurie at Mary Roses Quilts & Treasures or Antoinette at the Quilters Common. We will hopefully be having a sewing day sometime in November to put the quilt top together and passing it along to our quilter to finish it up. Thank you, Laurie Thies 3

4 Hole in the Wall Charity Update Hi Everyone, Thank you for those October donations - - we are up to 15 completed quilts, with lots of tops in progress. So now there is "Black/White Scrappy1" top to be stitched together from your September charity blocks. There is also "Bugs and Friends" (another 30 finished charity blocks - - thank you to Pat Winter for making the kits) to be stitched together. Please come and pick up one of these - - help finish a top! Happy Camper CHALLENGE: Thank you to Antoinette and Colette for donating a bunch of (about 20) Happy Camper fabric panels. I still have four more if you are interested. Get creative! The popular vote winner in June will receive a $50 gift certificate to Quilter's Common. The quilt must be finished and be very close to 60 x 70 inches. The Hole in the Wall charity block theme for November will be sports; the sports fabric can be the inside square or the outside frame. If you have a FQ of novelty fabric and team it up with another color - - make one of each. Please do not make more than 2 or 3 identical blocks - - hard to use in these scrappy quilts. Also, if you do not have novelty fabric, just two nice contrasting colors in a charity block pattern are great. Think BOY. Charity Block Themes: November - sports December - music January - dogs February - planes/ trucks/ cars/ etc. If someone will be my HELPER to do the mini- raffle from 6:15 to 7, then one BOY charity block is one ticket (the prize is a $5 gift certificate to Dunkin' Donuts). See our North Parish Quilters website or our table for the instructions for this year's Charity Block. Be sure the unfinished square is 12.5 inches. MEASURE AND TRIM UP PLEASE! 5 Yawkey Family Inn News North Parish Quilters is happy to support The Yawkey Family Inn with the donation of quilts and pillowcases for children and families. This is an ongoing project and we welcome any donations of these items whether they are completed projects or blocks and fabric that can be used to finish a project. Fabric for pillowcases is welcome 3/4 yard for the base pillowcase and strips that are either 3 or 10 by width of fabric. Any colors or prints we can match them up with other donations. Also, quilt tops can be donated and we will sandwich them and get them finished off. If you would like to donate a quilt yourself and need batting, let me know as we have a supply of batting for use with Yawkee Way quilts. 6 Mystery Quilt: The Case of the Patchy Churn It s not too late to sign up! Please see Linda Jeffrey, our Mystery Quilt Coordinator, for more information and to get your clues. Linda will be giving out Clues #2 and #3 at the November meeting. Here is a photo of a completed clue #1, which is our First Suspect, Quilty Patch: Thank you to Easy Made, and Billie Lauder for making this out of print pattern available to the guild for our Mystery Quilt. Fat Quarter Raffle Bring in your fat quarters (max. 3 / person) and see Joanne Barber for your raffle ticket(s). You will receive a ticket for each fat quarter you bring in. The Winner will get all the fat quarters collected. This month s theme is YELLOWS AND GOLD. Joanne Barber is the fat quarter coordinator and will be collecting your fabric. There will be a reminder in the newsletter every month regarding that month s theme. 7 Auction 2015 News Sale- a- Bration Girls just want to have Fun!!!!! Thank you to all that have donated fat quarters for our Auction Raffle Baskets for April. They were awesome!!! Now, for this month s little fun thing to bring, we are looking for notions to add to this basket. So, when you are out and about shopping remember to pick up some pins, threads, rotary blades, any little notion to help our cause. Remember to watch our Show and Tell next month; we should have some samples/ideas for you to see what we are looking for to auction off. Remember Girls just want to have Fun!!!! 8 SNOW CANCELLATION POLICY: In the event that North Reading Schools are canceled on the day of a North Parish Guild Meeting, then the guild meeting is also canceled. However, if snow conditions become severe through the day, members will be notified by by 3:00 pm on the day of the meeting. We ask that everyone assist with notifying our members of a cancellation.
