Thank you so much to Nancy Barkume and Ruth Roush for organizing the September program of our year. Rhonda Adams quilts were a delight to see and we are so lucky to have her share her passion for quilts and take us through her life journey with colors, patterns and lime green. What a lovely way to share a cloudy day with art, friends and good food. October will bring us Betsy True with more and more quilts. I know I am looking forward to the program of another talented lady sharing her quilting life with us. October also brings us Quilt Camp sponsored by Mary Downey and Ro Coller. If you have not already signed up, do us and come have a grand day with MVQU. There are 5 Tuesdays in October and traditionally we have used the extra Tuesday to work on our charity efforts. We will meet in room 112 at HHSC at 11:15 am on October 30. I have planned an easy pattern for us to use and make some charity quilts. If you have not signed up yet, just let me know if you can attend. You need not come for the whole time, just come and visit with us and feel free to participate in any of our efforts. A lot of fun will be had by all! Cynthia has posted the directions for our project on the blog and she has sent them in an eblast.

2 Next Tuesday (October 2) at our regular bee meeting, I will present a short tutorial in the construction of the blocks we plan to make for the charity quilts. I plan to be at HHSC by 10:30 am and will be glad to keep showing anyone coming later in the day how to make the blocks. If we have time, at the bee, we can cut some fabric in 9.5 squares which are the starting point of our blocks. If you have a 9.5 square ruler, please bring it and a rotary cutter, we have two mats in the room for our use. Welcome all for a great year of wonderful programs, sharing, learning and most of all having fun. Fondly, Rickie Fat Quarter Giveaway October 9 Yellow! When you bring a fat quarter to the business meeting, you will be given a ticket. You can bring as many fat quarters as you would like, and you will be given a ticket for each fat quarter. There will be a drawing and the owner of the winning ticket will be given the fat quarters. The winner will get to choose next month s color. Quilt Camp October 16 We are having Quilt Camp! One day October 16, 2018 from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at Mount Vernon Unitarian Church, 1909 Windmill Lane, Alexandria, VA. Lunch, coffee and tea will be provided. Come with your machine or your hand sewing. Sign up at the next meeting or call Ro Coller (301) or Mary Downey (703) Betsy True Trunk Show Tuesday, October 23, 2018, 12:30 p.m. Betsy True, an art quilter who lectures, teaches workshops and designs patterns, will present a trunk show of A Quilting Life. Betsy s presentation will chronicle her journey from traditional quilter to quilt artist, showing the good, the bad, and the UFOs, with tips for leading a productive quilting life. Her slides and trunk show will include quilts she has made, as well as some of her personal collection. Shoebox Quilt Project Lots of creativity and surprises are delightful parts of this Shoebox Quilt Project! 1. If you are interested in participating, contact Martha Dyckes, martha63@mac.com to sign up. The Shoebox exchange will begin on October 9 at the business meeting. 2. Before October 9, find a shoebox or a box of that size with a lid.

3 3. Select a focus fabric of approximately 1.5 yards and put it in the shoebox along with a variety of scraps that can be used to make the square. OR Fill your shoebox with scraps. 4. Bring your filled shoebox with its fabrics to the meeting on October Your shoebox will be given a number. You may select a different shoebox to take home. Be sure to check it out so we can keep track of the location of each shoebox. 6. Make a square that is 12.5 inches on each side. Put it in the shoebox and return it to the next big meeting, November 13. Repeat. 7. Be sure to return your completed Shoebox each month! If you can t get to the meeting please leave it with someone who will return it for you! 8. At the end of the year you may retrieve your original shoebox and see what great squares are ready for you to make a quilt! MVQU Challenge Quilt From Jeanne Farmer: We recently started a hand sewn quilt project at Cardinal Quilters that has been very popular. Interest has been expressed in doing a similar group project as our challenge for Mount Vernon QU this year. (The challenge will be to hand sew the top, crochet around the edge, and finish by hand quilting the quilt.) We are using rubber stamps from the Netherlands that Inez introduced us to. If there is agreement, I will make kits and distribute them in the next month. Our goal is to finish this in time to display at the June 2019 QU Quilt Show. Note: I was so thrilled with these stamps that I ordered a set for myself. Others have expressed interest in doing the same. Information regarding the stamps follows. Jeanette and the Dutch mail are incredibly responsive. The stamp set, inkpad and acrylic block from the Netherlands totaled $ I ordered the inkpad and block as the ones I have found here are not as good and they don t add to the shipping. From: Jeanneke <mail@jeanneke.com> I made a listing for you in my Etsy shop, you can find it herehttps:// HHSC Advisory Council Annual Bazaar Saturday, October 20, 9 am 2 pm Over 30 Crafters, Lunch, Silent Auction, Bake Sale, Door Prizes Hollin Hall Senior Center is having their annual bazaar on Saturday, October 20th. It is a garage sale type auction meaning anything in good condition will be accepted. If you want to clean out your cupboards and closets now is the time! Donations can be dropped off in the HHSC office. A pillow front made of candlewicking and colonial knots stitched on unbleached muslin was donated by a MVQU member for the bazaar. It is a rare example of exquisite handwork of a bygone day. Additionally, an apron and matching mitt were donated. These items are clearly labeled as donations from Mt. Vernon Quilters Unlimited. They will be part of the silent auction.

5 Charity Projects - Wanted: Tennis Balls To date MVQU has delivered 32 pet beds to Alexa Fuerth, HHSC, for the animal shelter. If you have scraps...pieces of batting, stuffing, fabric scraps, old pillow forms (update your houses with new pillows!) please leave in Room 216, marked for Dianne. Wanted new or used tennis balls and tube socks in good condition!i am making dog 'fetch and return toys for a Doberman rescue in Pennsylvania. Donations can be left in Room 216 with my name on bag or bring to the meetings. Thanks much, Dianne Tippins McLean Auction on Tuesday, October 23 rd We are blessed with a beautiful selection of kits and fabric from the stash of McLean member Linda Roberts who passed away last year. There will be a Live and Silent Auction, pre-marked table, many baskets and arrangements of fabulous fabric. Always refreshments! Our auction is visitor friendly and loads of fun, please join us. Board members were thanked for their past and future service. A letter from the Veteran s Administration was read thanking us for the donation of 39 quilts. The bylaws have been signed and posted. Barbara Zygiel won the prize for Best Traditional Quilt at Quilt Odyssey in PA. Volunteers are still needed for the following positions: Bee Enhancement, Charity and Community Outreach, Community Displays, and December lunch. There is a bin upstairs to collect charity quilt donations. The Big QU Event will be Quilts of Illusion on Sept. 27, with a workshop on Sept. 28. Each chapter has 2 places for the workshop, if you wish to attend notify Rosemary Ryan by Sept. 15. The class fee is $30 with $16 for the kit. Old Business We will try to sell our embroidery machine and 2 sergers on the QU Digest. Jeanne Farmer volunteered to check the machines and submit the information to the Digest. We will table our decision on what to do with the 2 quilt tops.

6 We will not plan a bus trip as we could not get a volunteer to head it. Programs Rhonda Adams will speak on Sept. 25, with a workshop on the 26 th at the Unitarian Church. Treasurer and Membership -- Forms must be submitted by Sept. 20 for your name to appear in the QU Directory. The audit has been completed. Mary updated forms for expenses and deposits, they are online. Summer expenses were $ and intake was $240. Big QU Jeanne Farmer reported that the annual meeting on June 1 and the annual show workshops will be held at the Holiday Inn. The guest lecturer is Karen Eckmeir, who will speak on Happy Villages and Accidental Landscapes. 3 international teachers will be holding classes and have a booth, their names will be announced later. Challenge Quilt Jeanne displayed the Francy quilt that the Cardinal Quilters are working on, and suggests our group may do the same project. Block Exchange Martha Dykes and Kathleen Shaw explained this year s project. About 1 ½ yards of focus fabric and accents are placed in a shoebox. Each participant takes a different box each month and makes a 12 ½ block, which the original owner of the box will collect at the end of the term. Sign up to participate at the next business meeting. Quilt Camp Ro Coller and Mary Downy have planned a day for us at the Unitarian Church on October 16, from 9:30 to 3:30, with lunch provided. Sign up to attend. The raffle basket of neon fabric was won by Zoe Ann Brown. The color for next month is yellow. Refreshments were provided by the Executive Board members. A sheet was passed to sign up for future meetings. We enjoyed show and tell from several members. The meeting was adjourned at 1:30.
