North Parish Quilters President s Note February 2015 Hello Quilting Friends, It was fun to get together and get some sewing done for charity! Many thanks to all who braved the weather and joined us last month! A special shout out to Jean and RoseMary for their extra efforts to have enough work ready to keep us busy. My favorite sound is the hum of a sewing machine! Speaking of braving the weather, this is a good opportunity to remind all you folks that we don t want you to risk life or limb to come out to a guild meeting. Please use you best discretion when deciding to venture out if we have nasty conditions. Take a moment to review the guild meeting cancellation policy as stated in this newsletter. We want you to stay safe. Valentine s Day is all about Cupid for most folks, but not us quilters because this February 14th we have an awesome workshop planned! It is not often that we get a chance to have the pattern designer herself come and teach us a class. At just $20.00 for members (which includes the pattern!) it is quite the bargain too! We have opened this up to non- members for $25.00 so you can even bring a friend. I m in and I hope you will join Susan and me as we learn something new. Details are in this newsletter. Antoinette Evans President SNOW CANCELLATION POLICY: In the event that North Reading Schools are canceled on the day of a North Parish Guild Meeting, then the guild meeting is also canceled. However, if snow conditions become severe through the day, members will be notified by by 3:00 pm on the day of the meeting. We ask that everyone assist with notifying our members of a cancellation. Members without should contact another North Parish Guild Member. 1

2 Program for February 2015 We are delighted to welcome Carol McLeod, the person behind Aunties Two Patterns She combines unique materials, your creative spirit, and her patterns to form wonderful (but practical) works of art. Her patterns include bag patterns galore, as well as, baskets, bowls, boxes, and rugs - with new ideas coming all the time. Carol introduces new techniques or materials in her patterns. Current patterns show you how to use leftover batting and fabric strips or weave fabric strips filled with interfacing to make beautiful bags and home decor items. Many patterns utilize the ever popular Bali Pops from Hoffman CA Fabrics, Dill Buttons and exciting new interfacings from Bosal including Duet Fuse II, a double- sided beefy batting, and In- R- Form, a foam- based batting in sew- in, single- sided fusible and double- sided fusible styles. Bosal also manufactures firm foam cores for use in "Tuffets" as well as moldable battings and a line of luxurious cotton battings. Carol has always loved to sew and as she says, Just put me in front of a sewing machine and I ll create. Her real passion is to reach into the scrap bag and make something new, a bit different, to manipulate fabric, to make someone smile and say that s cool! At our monthly meeting, she will share with us many of her creations and then on Saturday, we will have a special treat as she is leading a workshop just for us. It is sure to be a memorable few days. Guild members will be there to answer questions, serve as white glove ladies and conduct demos. LOCATION: Fabric Place Basement, 321 Speen Street (Cloverleaf Mall), Natick MA DATES: Each weekend from January 31 through February 15. TIMES: 10:00 am 7 pm on Saturdays; noon 6:00 pm on Sundays. 4 Fabric Estate Sale Susan Griffith is selling her Mother s Fabric Stash. The sale will take place on Saturday, February 7 th at the Covenant Church, 9 Westminster Ave, Arlington MA from 10am to 2pm. Kona Bay Orientals, Hoffmann prints, Andover Fabrics, Northcot, Robert Kaufman... and much much more. All fabrics $5 per yard. Here is what Susan said in her e- mail: "My mother, Ann Winsor, was a lifetime member of the Monadnock Quilt Guild in Peterborough NH, and died this past October, leaving a huge inventory of gorgeous fabric. We wanted to make your members aware of a fabric sale of her extensive stash on Feb 7th.... We haven t decided yet for sure, but it is possible there might be one or two sewing machines for sale as well." Hole in the Wall Charity Update Hi Everyone, Thank you for coming to Charity Night in January. Lots of great charity work done! Now we are up to 27 completed quilts and over 50 pillowcases, with lots of tops in progress. Please come by the Hole in the Wall table to pick up a kit for a few charity blocks. There are several different tops in progress. If you have a little extra time, I have a kit for an entire top also - - a very simple block. Also there are several quilts that need quilting, so please see me if you can take one! Charity Block Themes: February - planes/ trucks/ cars/ etc and dogs too (January's theme) March - nautical, boats, fish, ocean April - big and wild animals May - action figures, Ninja Turtles, Batman, etc. See the NPQ website for charity block directions. 5 Yawkey Family Inn News North Parish Quilters is happy to support The Yawkey Family Inn with the donation of quilts and pillowcases for children and families. This is an ongoing project and we welcome any donations of these items whether they are completed projects or blocks and fabric that can be used to finish a project. Fabric for pillowcases is welcome 3/4 yard for the base pillowcase and strips that are either 3 or 10 by width of fabric. Any colors or prints we can match them up with other donations. Also, quilt tops can be donated and we will sandwich them and get them finished off. If you would like to donate a quilt yourself and need batting, let me know as we have a supply of batting for use with Yawkee Way quilts. February Raffle Baskets Don't forget to visit the Raffle Table and buy tickets for a chance to win one of the 3 raffle baskets offered each month. Gayle Blake has been doing a wonderful job selecting items for the baskets each month. Tickets are 3 for $1.00 and the money goes to our Guild for our program activities and speakers. 5

6 Mystery Quilt The Case of the Patchy Churn With Clue #5 we now have Lucy Goosey, 4½ x 8½ : Block Measurements for the other suspects are: Quilty Patch (clue #1) - 4½ square: Flash Dash (clues #2, #3, #4) 8½ square Please see Linda Jeffrey, our Mystery Quilt Coordinator, to get clue #6 this month. This clue will help us to identify our next Suspect! Thank you to Easy Made, and Billie Lauder for making this out of print pattern available to the guild for our Mystery Quilt. 6

7 Auction News Our February Meeting will put us in a time frame where we have approximately 90 days to prepare for our Ladies Night Out Event (auction) which is our major fundraiser for the year. We hope you will help! At the February meeting we will ask you to pull a slip of paper on which will be a single word/theme/color. We are hoping that you will make a table runner, placemats, napkins, table topper or something for the kitchen or dining room table - in that color or theme. Our goal is variety so we are hoping that this helps. In addition, as you go through your homes - if you have unused items that would be used on the table, and you would like to donate - we can match them with finished runners for better auction value. Suggestions - Yankee Candles Taper candles Coasters Cheese cutting boards Salt and Pepper shakers Floral Arrangement And finally, if you know of any florist, candle shop, take out restaurant that would be willing to donate a gift certificate, these would also be nicely paired with table linens for better auction value. We need your finished quilts and donations by March 11, 2015 at the latest. Please them drop off at Mary Roses Quilts & Treasures any time. Also would like to add, we are looking for volunteers to help with a few jobs, ex: tagging items, checking people out that night and a few other fun jobs. Please come and see Laurie Thies. 8 Fat Quarter Raffle Bring in your fat quarters (max. 3 / person) and see Joanne Barber for your raffle ticket(s). You will receive a ticket for each fat quarter you bring in. The Winner will get all the fat quarters collected. This month s theme is Grey Fabrics. Joanne Barber is the fat quarter coordinator and will be collecting your fabric. There will be a reminder in the newsletter every month regarding that month s theme.
