Check out our website NORTH PITTSBURGH QUILTERS GUILD SEPTEMBER 2013 NEWSLETTER Hello Fellow Quilters, It s time for another new beginning. The kiddos are off to school(yeah). Clubs and activities are starting up again and our guild begins the new year. As stated in our by-laws, the guild provides fellowship and educational opportunities to our members for the continued growth as quilters. I hope you are looking forward to the new beginning as much as I am. Welcome to our new members. Jump in with both feet no matter what your skill level is. We all share a common interest and have plenty to share. I have learned so much from other guild members. Speaking of beginnings, I hope you have begun your quilt for the show in April. Yes, even you newbie s. I remember the first show I entered. I thought my quilt wasn t good enough but a few encouraging words from the judges and complements from other quilters made it all a positive experience. Just do it! Our September meeting features Vivian Benton, a very creative and inspirational quilter. She always has something new and exciting to show us. Come and get pumped up for our new beginning. As the song says, See You In September Donna
Welcome to NEW MEMBERS Missy Bauer and June Maier SUNSHINE COMMITTEE REPORT Elsie Richards Helen Marcus has passed the work of the Sunshine Committee along to Elsie Richards for the =2014 year. Elsie requests that members notify her if Congratulations (new baby), Get Well, or Sympathy cards should be sent on behalf of the Guild. This summe cards were sent to Cheryl Kirchner to wish her a speedy recovery from knee surgery and most recently, a sympathy card was sent to the Sesti family on the passing of ruthann s father-in-law.. PROGRAMS Loretta Crum September meeting: We ll start our quilt year with ideas and inspriation from local quilter, teacher, designer and just simply nice person, Vivian Benton. Vivian will share comments on her quilt journey as she shows us some of the many beautiful quilts she has made. October meeting: We ll see demos of any easy method of paper piecing done right side up@ - developed by Lyunn Graes during her yars of quilting and making piecing easier. Lynn and her dauther, Sarah Barnett, owner of Little Foot Quilt Shoppe in Evans City, will share this technique and others with us. Don t forget to check out their shop@ November meeting: Bonnie Purcell will discuss the Quilts of Valor program and display some of the quilts made recently. This is a wonderful lead-in to this year s community service project for Quilts of Valor
This year s Community Service Project will be quilts for the Quilts of Valor Foundation to be distributed to the Wounded Warriors. We will be asking members to make a simple star block. Kits and directions will be provided. If you have any red, white, blue or patriotic print fabrics (no flowers please) you would care to donate, it wold be greatly appreciated. Anything from scrapes to fat quarters to yardage can be used. There will be a basket for donations at the next few meetings. The blocks will be assembled with sashing and mde into a top at our community Workshop in May. Block kits will be available starting in October. This is a wonderful project as the quilts are so greatly appreciated by those that receive them. Please help. Betty Kania, Community Service Chairman REMINDER NORTH PITTSBURGH QUILTERS GUILD show dates are April 25, 26, The hospitality committee organizes the Fat Quarter (at minutes refreshment break) at the guild meetings. The committee will provide the coffee, tea, utensils, plates and napkins. The guild board members will supply the goodies for the September 3 rd meeting. A sign-up sheet will be available asking you to donate a refreshment for subsequent meetings. After you sign up to bring a snack, we ll give you a remender or phone call a week in advance. Sylvia Lynn, Hospitality Committee
As Vice-President of the Guild, I take seriously my duty to finish a quilt wowrthy of being displayed in the Quilt Show, and even taking the risk of having it judged good for my wih to grow as a quilter. All I have to do is finish a quilt. Could happen! I also am charged withpicking up the mail. Anthing of interest I will share. Recently we received a letter from Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area. It is an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the indusrial and cultural history of the 8 counties of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Because of the particular importance of the steel mills and the strategic relationship of the rivers to their success, that is their focus. They are also dedicated to the cultural aspects of the region, and that is where the Guilds come in. They wrote to ask for permission to include NPQG in their online directlry of culturally and ethnically significant people and places. Which is undergoing enhancement to serve as a resource for visitors, educators, historians and other interested individuals who visit the website. I thought it was exciting for the Build to be considered culturally significant, and I am in the process of communicating with their contact person. I will let you know how this progresses. If you are interested their website is Jan Merritt Vice President OUR FIRST FUNDRAISING ACTIVITY FOR 2013/2014 Hello Everyone! At our September meeting we will be having our famous CUP AND A QUARTER raffle again this has been a profitable and fun activity and it will be happening again in November, January, and March So, bring those cute cups full of pretty fat quarters tickets are 3 for a dollar and we all can use one more coffee or tea cup, right? See you there! Marilyn
Here are some requests from s received on the npqg webside. If you think you are interested, you can contact them directly. Elena Zaitsoff I would like to have an antique quilt restored. It is a double wedding ring. I am hoping you know someone local who restores quilts. Kathleen DiDomenico kdidomenico56@verizon.net Is there anyone in the guild interested in making aquilt from old t-shirts. My sister-in-law would like one made for her dauther s graduation. If so, cost? Brittany Morrow bmorrow@bcbigs.org Helloo. My name is Brittany Morrow. I work for Biog Brothers Big Sisters of Beaver County. We are doing an activity for the children within Big Brothers Big Sisters of Beaver County, were we have 8 ½ inch quilt square and they are decorating the squares with their hand prints and favorite memory with their Bigs. We are looking for someone to make q auilt out of the squarews and was wondering if you could give us a price if interested. We would need it done no later than October 15 th in which we will action this quilt off at our Annual Autumn Auction? We would like the finished quilt size to be 54 by 72 If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
