1 April 2013 April Meeting Summary: Program: Maureen Blanchard Lecture and Trunk Show Show and Tell: No Vendor: Maureen from Cobblestone Quilts Fat Quarter: Bugs, butterflies and bees Creative Quiltworks Announcements: Nothing new this month Charity Announcements: A note from Ellen and Linda: We only have Apr & May to collect quilts and pillowcases, as we deliver our quilts etc. in June. The very latest any member could turn in a quilt or pillowcase would be at the June meeting. To date we have a total of 43 quilts, 86 pillowcases and 27 bears. We are not looking for bears as we have a backlog from past years. That's not a great showing from the membership which exceeds 85. A great big thank you to those who have gone above and beyond by making many quilts for charity PLEASE, PLEASE get your pillowcases and quilts to the Charity girls by the June meeting. It is such a good feeling to make something and then know it is going to a good cause. Hostess Announcements: Linda McVane, Liz Coviello, Maureen Matthews and Mary Whitaker will be providing snacks for the April meeting. 1 P a g e

2 Program Announcements: The Guild Getaway weekend was a wonderful time; lots of laughs, lots of sewing, lots of food lots of prizes and most of all a great time to make new friends! A special Thanks to the Program Committee for planning the retreat. The bus trip this year is on Saturday April 13. We will be going to the Fabric Place Basement in Natick and then on to the Sewing and Quilt Expo at the DCU Center. If you are interested in going or would like to bring a friend please check with Gretchen to see if places are still available. The bus is leaving the Saugus Senior Center at 9:00am sharp and returning to the Senior Center at about 6:00pm. The cost of the trip is $27. At the April meeting, Maureen Blanchard from Cobblestone Quilts will present a trunk show and lecture primarily on using Jelly Rolls. I can admit that I am a Jelly Roll addict (both fabric and pastry) and have done many Jelly Roll race quilts. I am very excited to listen as Maureen teaches us to make stars, plaids, butterflies, flowers and more from these 2-1/2 strips. By-Laws Committee: The By-laws Committee of Janet Stone, Dottie Macomber and Sue Tamulaitis have amended the Guild s By-Laws. Please visit our website, review them and plan to vote at the April meeting. "Rainbow of Quilts": An Exhibit of Quilts by Margarita Blumkina Wednesday, April 3rd - Wednesday, April 24th Public Reception: Sunday, April 7th, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Workshop with Margarita Blumkina: Saturday, April 20th, 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm The Abbot Library is pleased to present an exhibit of selected quilts by award-winning quiltmaker Margarita Blumkina. The show highlights Blumkina s extraordinary creativity in bringing together color and pattern, often making use of vintage fabrics which lend her quilts a quality of visual warmth, unusual in newly crafted quilts. In 2012, Blumkina s quilts were included as semi-finalists in two separate American Quilter s Society Shows, one of the most prestigious of competitive nation-wide quilt shows. In 2011, one of Blumkina s quilts received a 1st prize Blue Ribbon at the Topsfield Fair; in 2012, she received a Blue, a White and a Purple Ribbon, at the Fair, for three of her quilts. One of the quilts in the Rainbow of Quilts exhibit will be raffled off, as a fundraiser for the Friends of Abbot Library. (The Friends provide funding for most Library programs and for the discounted museum passes that many enjoy.) Raffle tickets will be $5.00 each or 3 for $ Tickets will be sold on three dates: at the public reception for the show, on Sunday, April 7, from 2:00-4:00 pm; in the Gallery on Sunday, April 14; and on Sunday, April 21, beginning at 2:00 pm, when the winning ticket also will be drawn as part of the special event (an illustrated talk on Isabella Stewart Gardner s personal book collection) taking place at the Library, that afternoon. Margarita Blumkina will be offering a workshop on Saturday, April 20, from 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm, where participants will make a decorated placemat, using the quiltmaking technique of English paper-piecing to create a design in the pattern known as Grandmother s Flower Garden. A sample finished placemat is on view at the Library. The instructor will provide all materials; however, participants are encouraged to bring their own thimbles. Basic hand-sewing skills are required. The workshop will be limited to 10 participants. Please sign up at the Library s Main Desk or by phoning the Library at Take Four Placemats Make some for Spring! To make four placemats, you'll need eight fat quarters. 1. Layer the fat quarters with the selvedges even and closest to you on the cutting table. 2. Cut all eight fabrics to 19" by 16 1/2" If you don't have a 20" square ruler, use the lines on your cutting mat. I don't trust them, so I have every ruler made. This is a time when it's handy to be able to cut with both hands! 3. Make two stacks of four different fabrics. Set one stack aside for backing. Designate each fabric A, B, C or D. 3 P a g e

4 4. Measure from the left and make one cut 3" from the left edge. The next cut is 2" to the right of the first cut; the third cut is 2" to the right of the second cut. The fourth cut is 4" to the right of the third cut, which leaves the last section 5 1/2" wide. 5. Now it's time to shuffle! Move the layers like this: Row 1: leave in place Row 2: move top layer to bottom Row 3: move top two layers to bottom Row 4: move top three layers to bottom Row 5: leave in place 6. Sew horizontal seams of all five rows. (I advise taking only one layer to the sewing machine at a time. You can guess why.) Press seams open. 7. Now it's time to make the vertical cuts Measuring from right, cut as follows: Make first cut at 3" from right hand side Cut second section 2" from first cut Cut third section 2" from second cut Remaining section is 12 1/2" wide 8. Now it's time to shuffle again! Sections 1 and 4 remain in place. Section 2, move top three layers to bottom Section 3, move top one layer to bottom 4 P a g e

5 9. Sew vertical seams and press open. Note location of fabric "A" -- this shows how each fabric is position in the four different placemats. 10. Trim to uniform size.
