7 Merrimack Valley General Meeting Minutes January 19, 2017 Sew and Know Faux Piped Binding demonstrated by Bev. Meeting called to order at 7:00 PM by President, Ann Hockmeyer. She read Thank You cards from Stevens Bennett Home where toiletries were delivered after our Christmas meeting, and also from Hospice House. Emmaus House sent an thank you. Liz Swan Thanked those who took home raffle quilt blocks and brought them back. More blocks need to be sewn. Please return them at the next meeting. There will be an open sew at Aunt Mary s, 43 Stark Road, Derry, January 28, (Thank you for offering your space for our charity open sew). Liz stated that some charity quilts have been finished and shown to the Kulea Orphanage committee and they are overwhelmed! Liz suggested twin size quilts. She offered to quilt up to 5 twin size quilts for $20 each if members get her card and sign up online for this special offer. For the first five people who sign up, bring quilt top and back to the February meeting and the quilted quilts will be returned at the March meeting in time for that person so sew on the binding. There may be a second offering from March to April meetings. All charity quilts must be handed in at the May meeting. Liz introduced a few people from the Kulea committee. Jonathan thanked us for this amazing project. He stated we exist so they can thrive. The orphans would be happy with a burlap bag. A video was shown featuring Paulo. It gave us a general picture and knowledge of the orphanage. There are now 30 children in the orphanage. It is $35 a month to sponsor an orphan. Like us and share us on face book. If anyone wants to take the Tanzania trip, you can deliver your own quilt! Brochures and information are in the front hall. Talk to Liz for more information. Ann Hockmeyer Ann is impressed with all of us (the members). When she got to the meeting, the room was set up incorrectly. All the chairs needed to be moved in the other direction. With just a few words, many members got to work and made the correction. The vendor for the night cancelled in the afternoon, and with just a call, a Sew and Know was set up by Bev. Thank you all. Regarding the quilt show, we have save the date information. There is also a need Kitchen chair, Stacy Caruso volunteered, thank you, Stacy! Another need The By- Laws state, no executive board member can serve over 3 years. A Vice President and Treasurer Payable are needed. A Nominating Committee is needed. See Ann if you can fill in for the nominating committee. Marianne Karp Row By Row information. She discovered that the next month s row, the Card Trick block, does not lend itself to an 8 inch block. Instead, for this month, make the log cabin block, or variation, making 6 8 inch blocks. A different block will be substituted for the log cabin block which used to be at the end of the quilt. A new block will be chosen and a Sew and Know will be demonstrated. Regarding the February bag workshop: Layne is making clear direction changes and a shopping list will be ed to those who have signed up to take the workshop. The bag designer will be the speaker at the April meeting. Minda Fowler UFO Auction is coming up in February. Thank you for all the donations tonight. There will be an organizing date of February 11 th at the Byfield Church, 132 Jackman Street, Georgetown, at 9:00 AM. Please come and help sort the auction items. A show of hands offered help. Ronnie Longwell, Programs Sign up for the tote bag workshop tonight. We need to have a number to buy enough patterns. Take a look at the up-coming speakers and workshops they offer. Sign up in the hall. A reminder: There will be a Quilt Show committee meeting on Wednesday, 2/15, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Georgetown Peabody Library, 92 Maple Street, Georgetown, MA. Show and Tell Break Diane Desjardins Membership There are 76 members present and 5 guests. Welcome Corinne, Cathy D, Ginette, Marjorie and Kathy C. Membership raffles were won by Diana D., Louise R. and Karen P. The fabric raffle was won by Diane D. The evening program is Journeys, a favorite program over the years. Three quilters share their quilts and quilting stories with us. Thank you to Louise Robitaille, Jane Hamel and Cathy Harnish for their quilting journeys. Motion to approve the treasurer s report and the minutes from the last meeting with corrections, seconded and vote was approved. Corrections to the minutes involved the unfinished sentence regarding the quilt show challenge information. The theme was changed to: The topic is Water, in any shape or form: ocean, lake, stream, pond, whirlpool, waterfall or anything pertaining to water, beaches, boats, etc. Diameter is not to exceed 100 inches. You must use a piece of fabric in the quilt that I am passing/have passed out. Complete information is on the MVQ blog. Respectfully submitted by, Beverly Valle, Secretary
