1 Item Notes Avg. $ Sewing machine & machine manual Good working order, cleaned and oiled, several bobbins, the electric cord and foot control. ¼ presser foot (very important for accurate seams; a zipper foot or other foot won t substitute) If there isn t a foot available for your machine, a universal ¼ foot to consider, developed by Lynn Graves, is the Little Foot, available in several shank sizes to adapt to most machines (Bernina machines also require an adaptor for this foot), Walking foot (aka Dual Feed foot) Multi-outlet (3 5) power strip Sewing machine needles for quilting (piecing and machine quilting) 12 x 18 gridded rotary cutting mat Quilter s rotary ruler: 6½ x 6½ square 6 x 24 (optional) 60mm (or) 45mm rotary cutter Small scissors or thread snips This must fit your machine. The foot you purchase varies depending upon whether your machine is made for high shank, low shank, snap-on, Singer Slant, etc. If sewing machine has computerized components, your power strip should include a good surge protector. One package Quilting needles (e.g. 80/12, 75/11, or a variety pack of sizes). Brand options are: o Schmetz pink label o Klassé yellow label o Singer QuiltPro assortment If using batik fabrics for your class project, bring 1 package Microtex Sharp 70/10 or 80/12, instead For use in your work area. Bring a different size instead if you have one. Recommend Olfa due to their high quality. Instructor provides larger mats. If you already own a rectangular or a square quilter s rotary ruler in a different size bring it, instead. *When purchasing new rulers, check out several brands to see what s best for you to view on top of fabrics; brands vary with yellow, white, black, or pink grids & markings. Omnigrid Non-Slip or Creative Grids are recommended brands. Instructor provides other ruler sizes Recommend Olfa Deluxe Cutter in 60mm or 45mm for ergonomic and safety reasons. Blade can be switched to opposite side for those who are lefthanded. Blade should be sharp or new. To reduce your investment, borrow from a friend, sign-up online or register your phone for JoAnn s coupon s or texts, and watch for JoAnn s sale prices. You can expect to save $80 - $90 for an investment in supplies of $70 - $100, with fabric, if you spread out your supply purchases over a few months. You re able to customize the sampler for your comfort level to successfully complete the project from piecing to simple machine quilting and binding during the workshop. 3 100% Cotton Fabric Requirements: Approximately $35 for the project at full price Option 1: Two Fabrics (Easier Method (a light and a medium or dark fabric to contrast): ¾ yard of a light-colored fabric for block unit backgrounds 2¾ yards of a medium- or dark-colored fabric for piecing blocks, sashing (strips between the units), binding that finishes the edge, a hanging sleeve (if needed) and the backing for the quilt. Background Fabric Medium or Dark Fabric Option 2: Three to Five Coordinating Fabrics: ¾ yard light-colored fabric for block unit background, sashing, and borders ½ yard of a Focus fabric, generally a multi-color print fabric with which other fabrics can be coordinated 2 to 3 different Fat Quarters (18 x 22 cuts sold in quilt shops) that coordinate or contrast with the Focus fabric 1 yard for the quilt backing and a hanging sleeve if needed (may be muslin, the same fabric as your background, or another fabric) Note: Quilt batting for your sampler is provided as part of the materials fee payable to the instructor. Fabric Advice for Beginners, please avoid: cotton flannel fabrics, poly/cotton blends, wool or silk fabrics as they are very challenging to work with. plaid fabrics or fabrics with obvious directional prints solid black fabric or print fabrics with black or very dark backgrounds. Why? It is more difficult to see accurate seam allowances and your thread during when piecing and machine quilting.
