9 Fiesta Vases Appliqué General instructions & supplies This is a 7-month (square quilt) or 10-month (rectangle quilt) project. Blocks are large finished 18 x 24. Finished quilt sizes are approximately 60 x 60 (square quilt) or 60 x 90 (rectangle quilt). Additional borders may be added. My quilt will be on display during each class. Pictures of the blocks are under the APPLIQUE tab on my web site at It is highly suggested that students read the information for Fiesta Vases on my site before ordering patterns. Fabrics: Background fabric (use a light color) - 2 ½ yds for square quilt or 3 ½ yds for rectangle quilt. DO NOT USE BATIK FOR BACKGROUND it is too tightly woven. A soft background fabric such as Kona Cotton is desirable. Do not get fabric where you can "feel" the pattern on top -- such as those with the rubberized pattern that is adhered to the front of the fabric. This is hard to needle by hand. Appliqué Fabrics - fat quarters are best, but 1/3 yard cuts will also work. General suggestions for most blocks: 3-5 shades of green (same ones can be used in each block if you wish, but I suggest more variety), 3-5 shades for flowers (depends on the block), 2-4 shades for each vase (depends on the block). Sashing, border, backing, and binding fabrics will be addressed later. However, if you choose to make a border in the same fabric as the blocks, decide which version you want to do and how wide you want the border to be, then calculate additional yardage needed. Patterns are $48 for the complete square quilt set. You may also use the link on my site. It is highly suggested that students read the information for Fiesta Vases on my site before ordering patterns. *¼ Bias Bar (metal bias bars work best, but the plastic ones are easier to find) *Scissors 5R Ginger craft scissors or 5 ½ Kai scissors work nicely for appliqué *Appliqué Pins The ¾ white head appliqué pins are best. *Regular sewing pins *Medium or Thick line Blue Wash-Out pen. *Basting Needles Milliners size 10. I prefer John James or Richard Hemming *Appliqué needles Sharps size 10. I prefer John James or Richard Hemming *Quilting Thread Bright yellow or Goldenrod is best, (or a color that shows on the appliqué fabric). *Threads to match applique fabrics size 60-weight embroidery (matte finish) or size 100 silk. *Rotary cutter, small ruler, and small mat Pre-Class Instructions: Please pre-wash your fabrics to remove sizing and check for dye bleeding. I highly suggest using Retayne to set the dyes of all appliqué fabric. For information on using Retayne, go to my site at Cut washed background fabric into five or eight blocks 20 x 26 and two 20 x 12 blocks as shown below.

10 FREE-MOTION MACHINE QUILTING (FMQ) 1 & 2 combined FMQ1 - beginning free-motion quilting will teach students to master their sewing machines as they teach it to follow their lead. Students learn the basics of FMQ using basic FMQ techniques. Intermediate sewing skills are suggested. FMQ2 - intermediate free-motion quilting expands the lesson to include a variety of open design background fillers. In this intermediate FMQ class, students will learn to first draw, and then stitch, designs, while training hands and eyes to move in a free-style manner. Intermediate sewing skills are suggested. Supplies: *A free motion darning or free-motion embroidery foot. FMQ CANNOT be done without this foot. Ask Paramount for assistance in choosing one for your machine. *Sewing machine with manual, plus extension table, if you have one. *General sewing supplies (scissors, etc.) *Machine Quilting Gloves ( Machingers Gloves are great see Paramount) *Blue wash out marking pen *5 or 6 medium sized Safety Pins, optional *Extra machine needles, size 90 (we will use several in class) 1 soft leaded pencil or size 7 or 9 mechanical pencil. 1 writing tablet or drawing tablet Optional - a cushion/pillow to sit on to raise your seating level to the table height Thread: *1 spool vibrant colored sewing machine thread (bright red, bright blue, etc) *1 spool white sewing thread *1 bobbin filled with the white sewing thread *1 spool medium color YLI Variations variegated thread. (Do not select a dark color.) *1 bobbin filled with above YLI thread. Fabrics: squares plain (solid) white or off-white cotton fabric such as muslin, cut into 13 x13 squares (requires approximately 3 yards) squares thin Batting such as Warm and Natural (easiest to work with), cut 13 x 13 Pre-class Instructions Please have your fabric and batting cut to the sizes noted above before coming to class, as we will begin sewing immediately and there will not be time or space to do so during class. Create mini-quilt sandwiches by layering each 13 x13 batting square between two 13 x13 fabric squares. Pin or spray-baste quilt sandwiches. If you wish to spray baste, please spray at home.
