180 Doodle Quilting Designs: Free-Motion Ideas for Blocks, Borders and Beyond 25 Doodling helps improve your free-motion skills Get your design ideas and thoughts on paper first! Be creative! Calms your mind. Allows you to focus. Develop muscle memory. You ll feel more comfortable and confident when you are ready to stitch. 26
180 Doodle Quilting Designs Each design set includes 3 coordinating designs Square (6 x 6 ) Triangle Border (2-1/4 wide) 27 Four Ways to Master Doodling 1. Tracing the Design 2. Doodle Free-Hand On Paper 3. The Sulky Stick n Stitch Method 4. 28
1A. Tracing the Design Supplies: A simple sketch book with unlined pages. Felt-tip pen or marker. Pad of tracing paper. Designs from 180 Doodle Quilting Designs: Free-Motion Ideas for Blocks, Borders and Beyond 29 1B. Tracing the Design Place a sheet of tracing paper over the doodle design. Using a felt-tipped marker, trace over the design. Begin at the start point and stop at the end point. 30
1C. Tracing the Design As you trace, you will start to understand how the design is formed, and you ll get a feel for the repetitive motion that you will be using when you stitch. Keep practicing until you feel comfortable with the design. 31 2A. Doodle Freehand Next, try doodling the design freehand in your sketchbook. Use the original design as a reference. Doodle the design on the paper while keeping a continuous line. 32
2B. Doodle Freehand Don t worry about drawing perfectly or making a pretty picture! The process of doodling is all about creating your muscle memory and finding a relaxing tempo. 33 3A. Sulky Stick n Stitch Method 34

Sulky Stick n Stitch Method Peel the release sheet from the back of the Stick n Stitch Stabilizer and place the printed pattern on the right side on the quilt sandwich. 38
Set Your Machine Up for Free-Motion Consult your machine manual. Thread your machine with your favorite Sulky thread. Use the appropriate size needle for the thread. Use a matching thread in the bobbin. Lower the feed dogs. Insert a free-motion foot. Set your machine for a straight stitch. 14/90 Schmetz Topstitch Needle for 30 wt. and 16/100 Schmetz Jeans Needle for 12 wt. 39 3E. Sulky Stick n Stitch Method At the starting point, pull the bobbin thread up to the top. Use an open-toe spring-loaded foot for better visibility. Lock the stitches by stitching in place a couple times or slightly moving the fabric back and forth. Clip threads. 40
3F. Sulky Stick n Stitch Method Free-motion stitch the spool, beginning at the start point. Follow the lines to the end point. Relax! Try to keep a nice constant speed. Move the fabric according to the speed of your machine. You don t want your stitches to be too long. You don t want your stitches to be too short either. Enjoy the process!!! 41 3G. Sulky Stick n Stitch Method You can have fun and create different doodle fills within the spool of thread. 42

This wavy line design from Vicki Ruebel has a central focal point. It is an easy and forgiving design because the squiggly lines are meant to be irregular! 57 First I practiced tracing the design on tracing paper. Then, I Doodled Free-Hand in my sketch book. 58
I even did some very rough sketches of the wall hanging to get an idea of how the quilting would look. I thought the doodled X shapes in the smaller squares looked too busy. 59 So, I tried a different idea based on Vicki s squiggly lines and simplified the corner squares to rows of diagonal squiggles. 60
Practice Doodling Blocks Practicing on small quilt sandwiches is an important step that will help you feel confident when you re ready to stitch on your project. Don t be shy in both practicing and playing with different thread combinations. 61 Practice Doodling Blocks A light blue Sulky PolyLite thread blends well with the aqua background. It creates a great texture and has just a touch of sheen. 62
4D. If your stitches are too long, you re moving too fast in comparison to the machine stitching speed. If your stitches are too tight and short, you re moving the fabric too slow in comparison to the stitching speed. 63 Practice Doodling Blocks I thought the light blue Sulky PolyLite thread had a bit too much contrast on the royal blue fabric (top). So, I used a dark blue Sulky 30 wt. Solid Cotton thread for the borders instead. I also tested the dark blue thread on the teal and royal blue fabrics, and liked the effect. 64
Practice Doodling Blocks The Sulky Sliver Thread has a shimmering, sparkling effect on the royal blue fabric. 65 Sewing with Sulky Metallic Thread Place the thread on a vertical spool pin or positioned to keep the thread flat through the tension area. Lower the top tension setting several numbers. Use a 14/90 Topstitch or 14/90 Metallic needle. Use a lightweight bobbin thread. Sew slower. You can find more tips for working with Sulky Sliver Thread here: thread/metallic/sliver/ 66
The Thread Director 67 Practice Doodling Blocks Sulky 30 wt. Cotton Blendables Thread produces a really wonderful transition from color to color. 68
Before free-motion doodling on the Celestial Wall Hanging, use a walking foot to stitch in the ditch all around the shapes within the quilt. This anchors the layers together and adds definition to the design. Now, relax and have fun! You re ready to doodle quilt within the shapes of the wall hanging. 69 Visit how-to-quilt.html to download free How to Quilt ebooks, including Making a Quilt Sandwich, Binding a Quilt, and more! 70
