The leaves are falling. The quilt show is over. Phew! Congratulations to all the volunteers for another successful show. The Quilt Show Committee will share information about the show s success at the October guild meeting. At last months meeting, I shared with you that the theme for this year is finding ways to encourage new members to get involved in the volunteer network. To start, we are looking for members to volunteer to be a mentor. Most new members come with a friend, however, some come alone and need someone to guide them through the maze of information and opportunities that are available. If you would like to mentor a new member at a meeting, please let Bev Valle and Mary Kendall know when you arrive and sign in that you would be willing to do so at that nights meeting. This is not a commitment to be a member every month but just for that meeting. If a new member arrives and needs your help, Bev and Mary will introduce you. Thank you for helping with this important mission. At this month s board meeting, we discussed the importance of sharing information. We are going to try a few ideas in hopes that informing members is the best way to encourage volunteerism in our guild. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions please feel free to contact me. Some of the best ideas I ve heard have come from your suggestions. Our October meeting promises to be very exciting with information about the quilt show, plans for this fiscal year and our guest speaker, Sue Pelland Rotary Cutter Applique. We even have a surprise for you in your member package! Please come and bring a friend. I look forward to seeing all your happy faces. 2 Membership Newsletter Information Congratulations to all who have joined or rejoined the Merrimack Valley Quilt Guild! Membership cards will be available at the October meeting. Membership forms will be available at the meeting if you have not rejoined as yet. Membership lists have been sent out by as of August 22. Every month, after each meeting, an updated membership list will be ed. For those two who have no , a paper copy will be available at the meeting. Noted elsewhere in the newsletter, please see the information regarding timing that the membership table will be open. We have been missing the business meeting, so it has been decided to close the membership table at 7 PM and re-open at the break for late-comers to sign in and receive their raffle ticket for the drawing. Membership will be staffed from 6 to 7 PM. It will close when the meeting starts. It will also be staffed during the break. If arriving after 7 PM, join the meeting, and during the break, return to the membership table to sign in and receive your free ticket for the raffle. 3 Firstly, a great big thank you to Ann Hockmeyer for hosting our program in September. As always, Ann did a fabulous job and I know it was a nice change to do a handson project at our meeting. I expect to see a lot of red and white hexies at our October meeting. Also thank you to Cow s Rock in North Andover for the delicious ice cream sundaes. We could sure get used to that! Yum! This month, we will host Sue Pelland of Sue Pelland Designs. Her trunk show is Fast and Fabulous Rotary Cutter Applique with Leaves Galore Templates. The workshop is the beautiful Hope s Diamond. Supply lists and sign-up sheets will be at the workshop table and I have included a supply list here as well. You won t want to miss this one! Sue will also be vending and signing books so check out her website at suepellanddesigns.com. There are additional costs for the pattern and rulers and these fees are posted at the table as well. You can also share the ruler with a friend. Sue will have one or two available if you do not have one. The workshop will be held on Saturday, October 20 th from 9:30 to 3:30 at Byfield Parish Church in Georgetown. Sue Pelland Designs is an industry leader in innovative rotary cutting techniques for applique. Sue s Leave Galore templates, Hearts and More templates and Quilter s Chalk Line are the latest must have gadgets for those who want to speed up their applique process. Unique patterns featuring Leaves Galore plus Hearts and More cutting techniques will delight the traditional or not so traditional quilter with quick, easy twists on old favorites, as well as contemporary designs. The preference is to have 2 people at the table. If you have never travelled with the quilt, or you are a new member, we will match you up with an experienced sitter. It s great fun and talking with quilters traveling to the show is always an enjoyable experience. MVQ Guild meeting minutes 9/20/18 President s Announcements President Swan welcomed everyone back and set the tone for the year: helping new members to become integrated into the volunteer system. President Swan asked if there were any questions about the minutes submitted for the June 21, 2018 guild meeting by Jamie Ruh. No questi ons were asked and the minutes were accepted as circulated. President Swan asked if there were any questions about the treasurer s report in the September 2018 newsletter by Gail Forthoffer. Committee Announcements Photo Roster Linda Lydecker: If you haven t had your picture taken by Linda, let her know and she will take it for the roster which is onl y used for the purpose of getting to know everyone better. It will be ed to everyone. If you need a printed copy, let her know. Fall Retreat Phyllis Lauria: Wednesday, October 31 Sunday November 4. Two more spaces available if you are interested in going. Membership Bev Valle: Trying something new tonight: Closing down Membership table at 7:00 so the membership chair can attend the meeting. Reopening the table at break time and closing back down after break. If you are late to the meeting, sign in and get your raffle ticket at the break. There are 123 members paid and 14 are new members. Bev will send new membership list by if there are new members at guild meetings. For the charity this year, you can make or buy hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, or socks Quilt Show Mary Wilkes: Wrap up meeting for the quilt show committee members is October 16, 6:30 at the West Church. It will be a potlu ck dinner. Wrap baskets in tulle or cellophane. Need completed basket the day of set up of the show. Need to have a place to store baskets before the show. Bring lottery tickets. Thanks to Colleen for putting up posters for the show. Ann Hockmeyer is requesting sleeves on challenge quilts. Park your car at the second parking lot the days of the shows. Linda Lydecker talked about when you get to the show to volunteer, sign in at the front table. Linda if you have any qu estions. Wear your nametag. 114 out of 118 members are volunteering for the show. Great job everyone! Carrie Zizza: if you are hanging quilts on Thursday bring a stepladder. If you are having your quilt judged, cover your label. Reminder for first time entrants: make note that you are a first time entrant on entry form because there is a ribbon to be given for that category. Challenge quilts are being judged by Liz at Bits n Pieces. Bring on set up day. A question was asked if a challenge quilt ca n be judged by the professional as well as by the challenge quilt judge. They can if they had forms filled out for that. Find a friend to bring your quilt to drop off if you are unable to. Liz Swan, Marianne Karp, Ann Hockmeyer, Bev Valle all off ered to be a drop off place for people who couldn t bring there quilts the day of set up. Comfort quilts: If you have them, Mary Wilkes will take them. If not, bring them the day of the show. Wash the baby quilts. Liz Swan: Thank you to the Quilt Show Committee, they worked very hard over the summer. Betty Hastings: A donation was made to Quilter s Quarters of quilt tops. Please take a quilt top to quilt. Membership Bev Valle: There were 87 members in attendance, 14 new members, and 6 guests. Total membership is 124. Raffles won by Mary Lou Monteiro, Julie Mason, Cathy Harnisch, and Lynette Pisani Program Ann Hockmeyer showed us how to make the hexies for the Grandmother s Flower Garden pattern for our next raffle quilt. Ann has additional materials if you would like to do more. Bring to next meeting. Bring some donations for the kitchen for the quilt show. You must fill out forms for items to be put in the boutique. If you can do some appliqué for Ann Hockmeyer, there is a sign up sheet. There is a sign up sheet for Connections. Drop off your quilts to be judged for the show between 8:00 8:30 A.M. on Wednesday, September 26 at the Merrimac Library. Drop off for the quilts not being judged is 8:00-9:30 A.M. on Thursday, September 27 at Hope Church. New members should sign up for the blog. Any questions ask Liz.
