1 October 2016 Merrimack Valley Quilting Guild Celebrating 37 years of encouraging the art of quilting in the Merrimack Valley. MVQ was established in PR ES I D ENT S MES S AG E EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE President: Ann Hockmeyer Vice President Liz Swan Secretary: Bev Valle Treasurer AP: Elaine Rando Treasurer AR: Marianne Karp We did it! We had a very successful quilt show and many thanks are due to our quilt show chairs, Beverly Knapp and Lin Caiado for a job well done! Changing the date and location was a huge risk but it all worked out thanks to them and all the supporting committee chairs that worked tirelessly for months! Congratulations also to all the ribbon winners! Our next meeting with Timna Tarr as speaker will be so enjoyable. Timna is the designer of our beautiful new raffle quilt that debuted at the show. She will offer a trunk show and vend too. We will also have all the information you need about this year s charity project for orphans. Please come early to socialize and take advantage of Sew and Know at 6:20 and 6:40 and remember to bring snacks! See you on the 20 th. Ann Hockmeyer To reach any committee, please address correspondence to MVQ Guild PO Box 566 Haverhill. MA Newsletter items must be in to me by the 1st of each month: Pat.lucey@verizon.net October 20th 2016 Timna Tarr- her quilts have been on the covers of QNM and AQS trunk show. 2 SEW and KNOW Come early ( first session starts at 6:20) October s Sew and Know 6:20 pm and 6:40 pm How to Square up your quilt corner (make a 90 degree corner), and how to sew on an excellent binding! SAMPLER QUILT There appears to be a little confusion regarding the sampler quilt. The sampler is taking the place of the mystery quilt; There is no mystery quilt this year. The sampler can be of any size, pattern, fabric, style etc. There are no boundaries. I have a couple of give away sampler books as well as 2 for $5.00 each, Will bring to the Oct. meeting. Will also be available before the meeting if anyone wants to chat. You can reach or Please feel free to get in touch.. Deb Kelso Sunshine Lady: Mary Jo Ray If you know of someone who needs a bit of sunshine in their life, please contact Mary Jo on her phone please! Traveling to Cape Cod? New quilt shop opened a couple months ago at 159 Main St ( Rt 28) in West Dennis - right near Bass River. It is called Cape Cod Quilts and Cottages. Small but has lots of diverse fabrics and very pleasant owner. Check it out next time you are there. Closed Sunday and Monday
3 Timna Tarr s Workshop: Improvisational Piecing Workshop Improvisational Piecing Do you want to learn to let loose with your piecing? In this workshop students will get tips and tricks for making fun, spontaneous quilts. As each student works on her own improvisational piece there will be ample time for experimentation and real time problem solving. Supply List Sewing machine in good working order Basic sewing supplies (pins, needle for machine, seam ripper etc.) Scissors Rotary cutter, mat and rulers. We will be working with small pieces, so a small mat is adequate. Bring a couple of your favorite acrylic rulers. Neutral thread Fabric scraps from your stash an assortment of light, medium, and dark values. Now I know you re going to ask me how many scraps and how big? That s hard to quantify but a grocery bag worth of scraps, whatever sizes you have will work. Remember this is Improvisational Piecing we ll improv with whatever you come up with! 3, ½ yards of solid fabrics 1 light, 1 medium, 1 dark value all in the same color family December: Kris Poor Trunk Show: Christmas! Fun presentation during our holiday party with surprises - Thursday, 12/1/16 WORKSHOP: More Christmas and/or Kris's latest and greatest pattern - Saturday, 12/3/16 - $35 each She will also vend at the lecture I will be at the meeting to sign folks up for these great programs!!!
4 Lin and I would like to thank Everyone who helped to make our quilt show a success. Whether your participation was small, medium, or large, we appreciate all of you that gave time to help us out. Found - on setup day someone left a beige corduroy shirt at the church, after the show we found a paper bag of items that may have been bought at the White Elephants, and a small umbrella. I will have these items at our next regular meeting. Beverly Sue Dodge was the winner! Many Thanks! Thank you to all who donated drinks and desserts to the Quilt Show Café, to all who purchased things to eat at the café, and to all the volunteers who worked in the café this year. We had a blast, and made a bundle! Financial report will be available soon. Bev Valle and... Many thanks to all who donated items to the Silent Auction. We had a nice variety of items, and they all sold for high prices! We at least doubled what we took in last year! Nice going! Bev Valle
5 Congratulations to all who made Quilt Show 2016 such a wonderful success. After you ve had a few days to catch your breath, it s time to think about moving forward. She described the up-coming speakers and workshops, including a tote bag workshop led by Marianne Karp in February. Ronnie is looking for help on the program committee. Some workshop dates need to be scheduled as locations need to be found. Suggestions would be appreciated. Workshops can hold up to 20 people. The workshop for September 17 (Finish up your quilt show quilts) has been cancelled- no interest. Terry Palardy Shop Hop (Quilter s Quarters) is scheduled for the same weekend as the quilt show. She explained the Shop Hop, and it will include Sunday, October 2, when the quilt show will be over. Deb will be available 15 minutes before each meeting, or by phone, if you need help. Beverly Knapp and Lin Caiado Quilt Show Information Lin showed how to prepare your quilts for the show. Come to the hall at the break to pick up tags, index cards and information. Put your quilt in a stand up bag. Cover your label with blue tape if it is being judged. Every quilt (except tiny quilts) must have a sleeve. Use many safety pins placed close together, or sew on the sleeve. No sleeves are needed for the challenge quilts. It is mandatory for every member to sign up to volunteer for 2 hours during the quilt show. If you cannot be at the show, be prepared to do something ahead of time for a 2 hour commitment. Speak to Ann H. if you are not available for the show. Please wear your name tag when you volunteer. Sign in at the front desk, and pick up an Exhibitor tag if you have a quilt in the show. Drop off your quilts on Thursday morning before 9:00, at the main door of the Hope Church. Please donate water or soda, and finger desserts that equal 50 cent portions, all wrapped and labeled individually. Drop these off Thursday, Friday or Saturday at the kitchen. Pick up show quilts beginning at 5 PM on Saturday. Bring your slip with your quilt numbers that you received when you brought your quilts in. Volunteer chair noted that only 42 members have signed up to volunteer so far. Sign-up sheets will be on the table in the hall. Sign up in the yellow blocks. Some jobs are sit-down jobs for those who need to sit. Maggie J. and Pat L. talked about the Boutique. Every item must have a tag with initials, an item number and a price. Round up the price to whole dollars, if possible. Fill in the Boutique form with items you want to sell and bring to the show on Thursday, set up day.
