1 October 2012 Merrimack Valley Quilting Guild Celebrating 33 years of encouraging the art of quilting in the Merrimack Valley. It was nice to see several new faces in the crowd- Welcome! There are several ways you can be involved with quilting during the year. Come to meetings, and bring a friend! Choose a project or a few projects to make for a Comfort Quilt Project a quilt for Project Linus, or for the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill. There are scrap bees, and block raffles, making a block for the following years raffle quilt, learning about our storybook quilts that travel from school to school, UFO Auctions and Challenges. There are different events you can go to Mystery Bus Ride in the spring, Quilt Retreats, and different quilt shows or places where we sell raffle tickets to help raise money for the guild. You can find a lot of information on our blog mvquilters.wordpress.com. Here you will find the lecture/workshop schedule for the year, and you can sign up for workshops at each meeting. Please remember to join the guild membership by the October 18 th meeting, so you will be able to hang quilts at the April 2013 quilt show. New members can become a member at any time and be able to hang a quilt at the April Quilt show. Come and join the fun. See you there! 2 Penny Raffle for 2013 Quilt Show Each month we will be asking for donations for our themed baskets. September Children, Embellishments October - Fall, 30's, and Knitting December - Black and White, Batiks, and Holidays January - Winter and Wool February - Novelties and Patriotic March - Picnics, Gardening, and Spring Thanks, Deb Bring in both September and October to this months meeting! Paper pieced Table runner taught by Lisa McCarthy MVQ has two tubs of storybooks with accompanying quilts to be used in a classroom or school library They are suitable from Pre-K through Middle school. You can arrange for a tub to take to your child or grandchild s school for afew weeks. Mary Ginn and Maggie Judd are the people to see to arrange this.

4 Quilters' Gathering November 1 4, 2012 At Our New Location Radisson Hotel Downtown Manchester Manchester NH! MVQ will be selling tickets to our raffle quilt! The Gathering has a new venue this year. It will be at the Radisson Hotel, Downtown Manchester, 700 Elm Street, Manchester NH, November 1-4, 2012 Visit the website, A Quilter's Gathering online for more information about The Gathering! Theme Remember When featuring memories of the fifties. Co-Chairs: Karem Malio, Joanne Turner and Joann Burns April 26th and 27th Timberlane Regional Middle School All members are required to volunteer 2 hours either at the show or in preparation for the show. Quilts will be eligible to be judged if you choose. You must volunteer in order to receive a ribbon. 5 Merrimack Valley Quilt Guild Minutes of September 20, 2012 Meeting Meeting was called to order at 7:04PM by Bev Valle. Bev thanked Tom from National Sharpening Co. for sharpening quilters scissors. He will come back at Octobers meeting in the church parking lot to sharpen more scissors. Old Business *Historian-open position being worked out. *Mystery Quilt is being chaired by Jan Taylor. *UFO Auction-Terry Gelinas needs helpers for the auction. She would like someone who has room to store the items for the auction. *Quilt Show-There was a problem with information on the computer about the quilt show but winners of the quilt show shall receive their money prizes in the mail. Also the Viewer's choice ribbon will handed out at the October meeting. Volunteers are needed for venders for the quilt show. New Business *Travel Quilt-Tickets for the quilt will be sold at the Gathering in Manchester,NH. Mary Lou Kilcoyne has information on sign- up sheets for The Gathering. Tickets will also be sold September 29 th & 30 th from 9:30AM to 5PM Saturday and 11:30AM to 6:PM Sunday at Fabric Place in Natick. Let Jan Taylor know if you can help out on either of these two days, selling tickets in Natick. Lin Caiado-Comfort Quilt Project Merrimack Valley Hospice and Linus have been chosen to receive Comfort quilts. Small and twin size are recommended. Light weight quilts for premies. Jody Pellecchia, Accounts Payable, and Janet Gillis, Accts. Receivable are the new treasures for Bev-Presidents Challenge-Fabric samples from Robert Kaufman were brought to the September meeting from Bev. It is to be used to make small quilts for Linus donations and if there is left over fabric, use it to make small items to donate to the Boutique table at the Quilt Show.pot holder, eye glass case, key chain, scissor holder case, fabric pin cushion, etc. Please renew your membership by the October meeting. If renewing members have not paid their membership dues by October 18th, they will not be able to hang quilts in the April 2013 quilt show. Guests may come and pay a $5 guest fee. New members may join any month and be eligible to hang quilts in the show. Storybook Quilts-Pat Lucey (filling in for Maggie Judd this month,)and Mary Ginn can help you with information on the storybook quilts. Block Raffle- Andrea Bursaw has fabric for $1. Theme is red/white & blue. More information is on the project page of the blog. Blocks are due at the October meeting. Mystery Trip-Look for more information in the January newsletter. JoAnne Turner is in charge of the block exchange. It is going back to its old name Scrap Bee. More information is on the blog. Pat Lucey Newsletter items must be sent to Pat before the first of each month. If you don t access to a computer to receive newsletters, please let Pat Lucy know so she can make arrangements to mail them to you. Barbara Ward, Roseann Ricketson, Barbara Callard and Carrie Zizza are in charge of the raffle quilt for The fabric and instructions are $5. You will get your $5 back when the blocks are turned in. Karen Malio- The next Quilt Show meeting is October 1 st,. It will be held at the Plaistow Library at 7 PM. There will be a yard sale at the Plaistow Library October 20 th. Members can rent a table for $10, non-members for $15. More information at the October meeting. UFO Challenge will be run by Ann Stobbs. More information at next months meeting. November Quilt Retreat to Kennebunk is full. There were 87 members and 6 guests present at tonight's meeting. The door prizes were won by Sheila Ramsden and Susan Richards. The Raffle prize was won by Beth Wood. Show and Tell. Sue Richards announced Patty Sawyer, Quilt Judge, as the speaker of the evening. Barbara Black If there is anything left over at the end of the night, please get in touch with Bev Valle. She will hold on to it for you.

6 Do you have some UFO's (Unfinished Quilted Objects) hidden away in a closet, amongst the stash, etc. that you would like to finish? Well, here's your chance to win a prize for finishing one! (The one's you don't want to do can be donated to the UFO Auction in February.) All you have to do is follow the rules listed below for your chance to win a great prize! 1. Be a current MVQ member 2. Fill out an entry form and get it to me (Ann Stobbs) by /at the January 2013 meeting. I will need a good description of the quilt/item (colors,pattern,est. size, etc.), approximate year started, and your name. 3. The quilt/item must be shown to me by/at the May 2013 meeting. Once I have seen it and checked it off the list, you will receive one ticket for the prize drawing. If it is in the 2013 MVQ quilt show, you will receive an extra ticket for the drawing (you will need to let me know that it is entered along with the name/entry number so that I can find it there). 4. Allowable UFO ITEMS: a maximum of 2 "non quilt" items per person will be allowed. ie: potholders, postcard size, purses, clothing, wall hangings, doll quilts, etc. All others must be crib/baby quilt, lap, twin, queen, full, king size. 5. Prize drawing will be at the June 2013 meeting. Please see/contact Ann Stobbs if you have any questions ams01938@hotmail.com Each year one of our successful fundraisers is a UFO Auction- Featured are items that members no longer want and are donated to the Auction. These can be fabric half-finished projects, notions, books etc. The list is endless. If you donate fabric, please label with the yardage.

7 Project Linus - Merrimack Valley Chapter Jan Binette Linn, coordinator for this Linus chapter, was notified of our intent to have her chapter be recipient to our comfort quilts this year. Her gratitude was expressed and if scheduling permits, she will be glad to come to one of our meetings to brief her on their work in our community. Merrimack Valley Hospice House Tammy Stott, local contact, was notified of our intent to donate some our comfort quilts to the Haverhill facility. She mentioned the planned expansion and is very happy that we have chosen them. More information can be viewed at All quilts must be washable. Size may vary: from premie(24"x24" with very light batting) to twin size. Please mark your quilts with the designated charity. Embellishments that are easily detached (applique is great) are not acceptable for Linus quilts due to choking hazard guidelines. Thank you so much for your generosity, Aline "Lin" Caiado A personal note about Project Linus My 6 year old grandson was admitted to Wentworth Dover Hospital with an asthma attack last week. Waiting on his bed was a cuddly fleece blanket from the Linus Project. He was allowed to take it home all wrapped around him! Truly, this is why we have a Comfort Quilt Project! Pat Lucey

Please bring any scissors you want sharpened, drop them off with Tom as you come in, and he will sharpen them during our meeting, in his truck. The price ranges from $5 to $10, depending on the size of the scissor. Please be prepared to pay by cash or check as you drop them off. Thank you.
