2 Reinforcing Bar Coupers Simpify the design and construction of concrete Lapped joints are not aways an appropriate means of connecting reinforcing bars. The use of aps can be time consuming in terms of design and instaation and can ead to greater congestion within the concrete because of the increased amount of rebar used. Ancon coupers can simpify the design and construction of reinforced concrete and reduce the amount of reinforcement required. Lapped joints are dependent upon the concrete for oad transfer. For this reason any degradation in the integrity of the concrete coud significanty affect the performance of the joint. The strength of a mechanica spice is independent of the concrete in which it is ocated and wi retain its strength despite oss of cover as a resut of impact damage or seismic event. 4 Reinforcing Bar Coupers For many years the use of mechanica coupers to join reinforcing bars has been regarded as a means of reducing the use of ong bars. Engineers and contractors now recognise the benefits of using coupers to acceerate the speed of construction, increase productivity and simpify design detais. Couper Seection Ancon coupers are designed to exceed the tensie strength for reinforcing bars to AS 3600: 2018 and AS 4671: The two types of Ancon reinforcing bar coupers require different fixing methods. This, together with the quantity to be fixed and the ocation, wi determine which is the most appropriate couper for a particuar situation. The ends of the bars are enarged and a parae thread is cut onto the ends to suit the threaded couper. The couper is assembed using a pipe or chain wrench. Caibrated wrenches are not necessary. MBT Mechanicay Boted Coupers MBT coupers are suitabe where it is not convenient to have the bar ends prepared for the BT system. The bars are supported within the couper on two serrated saddes. Bars are ocked in pace by a series of specia ockshear bots, the heads of which shear off when the predetermined tightening torque is reached, providing a visua check of correct instaation. 4 Te:

6 Reinforcing Bar Coupers BT Parae Threaded Coupers BT coupers produce a fu strength joint yet they are among the smaest in the Ancon range, best suited to arge scae projects requiring a high voume of coupers. The end of each bar to be joined is cut square and enarged by cod forging. This increases the core diameter of the bar to ensure that the joint is stronger than the bar. The threaded ends of the bars are protected by an externa pastic sheath. Coupers, which are usuay suppied attached to the bar, have their interna threads protected by an interna pastic end cap. For certain appications, especiay where the BT system is being used in deep pours, the couper end caps may not prevent the ingress of concrete fines. For these appications, further protection may be required. Coupers for bar diameters contain a Guiding Chamfer on one end to assist in the instaation of the heavier bars. Parae metric threads are cut onto the enarged ends. BT Type A The BT Type A system utiises internay threaded coupers with a singe right hand thread and is suitabe for appications where the continuation bar can be rotated. The ends of the bars are upset and threaded for haf the ength of the couper. t t BT Type B The BT Type B uses the same couper as the Type A system, but one bar is threaded for a fu couper ength. 7 Two Stage Construction In two stage construction utiising the Type C system, it is essentia to form a oca bockout in the face of the first stage concrete. This wi create the space for the Couper and Locknut to run onto the thread of the fixed reinforcing bar. Refer to the instaation guide avaiabe on the website for further detais. Bar End Preparation Faciities BT threading equipment is ocated within Ancon s premises. Ancon iaises with rebar suppiers to achieve schedued, on-time deiveries. Coupers are usuay suppied pre-fixed to the threaded bar ends. Testing & Approvas The BT System is designed and manufactured in accordance with ISO 9001 and compies in a respects to AS3600 when used with reinforcing bar to AS Fu destructive tests have been performed to show compiance with various nationa and internationa requirements. 8 Reinforcing Bar Coupers Instaation The BT Type A System Screw the couper to the rear of the thread on the fixed bar and ock tight. The bar end shoud be centra within the couper. Remove the pastic cap from the couper. Position and rotate the continuation bar in the couper. Tighten the joint using a wrench on the continuation bar. After tightening there shoud be no more than 2-4mm of thread exposed, depending on the diameter of the rebar. The BT Type B System Screw the couper to the rear of the thread on the continuation bar. Position the continuation bar with the couper against the end of the first bar. Rotate the couper from the continuation bar to engage against the rear of the thread on the opposing bar and ock tight. 4 Using a wrench, rotate the continuation bar to ock the two bar ends against each other within the couper. After tightening, the ength of exposed thread shoud be no more than haf of the couper ength pus 2-4mm depending on the diameter of the rebar. 9 Instaation BT Type C System Screw the ocknut onto the fixed bar with the Type C1 thread. Screw the second ocknut foowed by the couper to the end of the thread on the continuation bar with the C2 thread. Position the continuation bar with the couper against the end of the fixed bar. 4 5 Screw the couper from the continuation bar onto the fixed bar and ock tight with a wrench against the ocknut. Screw the ocknut aong the continuation bar to abut the couper and ock tight with a wrench. 10 Reinforcing Bar Coupers BT Transition Coupers* BT Transition coupers are designed to connect reinforcing bars of different diameters whist sti maintaining the fu tensie strength of both reinforcing bars, ensuring the faiure mode is ductie faiure of the smaer bar. For Type A transition connections, both bars utiise standard Type A BT threads with a specia couper to connect the two bars. BT Transition Type A Type A transition connections utiise the same Type A BT threads as the standard system with a specia internay threaded couper to connect the two different sized cod-forged and threaded bar ends together. The thread on the arger bar and the couper is modified with a pitch matching the smaer thread. The couper needs to be rotated from the smaer diameter rebar onto the arger. 11 BT Stainess Stee Coupers* The Ancon range of coupers is predominatey designed for the joining of carbon stee bars, however stainess stee coupers are avaiabe for when stainess stee reinforcement is being used. These coupers are avaiabe in either grade 316 or Dupex stainess stee to match the grades of rebar avaiabe in the market. Stainess stee coupers are suitabe for projects of any size where the strength of the connection is required to match or exceed that of the parent bars, incuding arge scae, high voume couper appications. The end of each bar to be joined is cut square and enarged by cod forging. This increases the core diameter of the bar to ensure that the joint is stronger than the bar. There are currenty no oca standards covering stainess stee reinforcement. Stainess stee reinforcement is generay imported from mis in Europe. 12 Reinforcing Bar Coupers BT Wedabe Coupers* BT Wedabe Coupers provide a convenient means of connecting reinforcing bars to structura stee pates or sections. One end has the BT thread form; the other end is prepared for weding to the stee. BT Wedabe Coupers are manufactured from either Stee Grade 1045 to ASTM A576 or Stee Grade C45R to EN The oad conditions at the connection must be determined by the designer responsibe for this structura eement, aong with the type and size of wed required. Other important considerations are the type of eectrode to be used, which must be matched to the properties of the pate and tube, and to the site conditions under which the weding wi be undertaken. Weders shoud be quaified for the type of wed required. Instaation BT Wedabe Coupers 1 Carbon Equivaent Vaue - The Carbon Equivaent vaue of these coupers may typicay vary between , where the carbon equivaent vaue is given by CEV = C + (Mn)/6 + (Ni+Cu)/15 +(Cr+Mo+V)/5. d The couper must first be weded to the steework. 2 When ready to extend, remove the pastic end cap and position the continuation bar into the seeve. 13 BT Headed Anchors BT Headed Anchors create an anchorage in the concrete, repacing the need for cogged or hooked bar ends. They can simpify scheduing and bar pacement, and reduce congestion in the concrete. Designed for use on 12mm to 50mm reinforcing bars, BT Headed Anchors are internay threaded with metric threads to suit the BT couper system. They create a fu strength joint, the mode of faiure being bar break. BT Headed Anchors can be used in accordance with cause of AS 3600:2018 to reduce the deveopment ength of reinforcing bar. For typica appications, the deveopment ength is reduced to 10 times the diameter of the bar*. Refined cacuations can be performed using the bearing area (Ahead) vaues provided in the tabe beow. 14 Reinforcing Bar Coupers MBT Mechanicay Boted Coupers The MBT range of coupers provides a cost-effective method of joining reinforcing bars, particuary when the fixed bar is aready in pace. They are easy to insta and achieve faiure oads higher than 110% of the characteristic yied strength of grade 500 reinforcing bar. Neither bar end preparation to form threads, nor bar rotation are required. MBT coupers can aso be used to join imperia, pain round or deformed reinforcing bars. The bar ends are supported within the couper by two serrated saddes, and as the ockshear bots are tightened, the conica ends embed themseves into the bar. As this happens the serrated saddes bite into both the bar and the she of the couper. The ockshear bots of coupers up to and incuding the ET20 can be tightened using a ratchet wrench. For arger coupers a nut runner is recommended. In a cases heavy duty sockets shoud be used. When the pre-determined tightening torque for the bots is reached, the heads shear off eaving the top of the instaed bot sighty proud of the couper. This provides an instant visua check of correct instaation. Note: Impact toos must not be used to tighten ockshear bots. 15 Instaation MBT ET Series Pace the couper over the end of the bar to haf the couper ength +/- 6mm and finger tighten the ockshear bots onto the bar. Check the aignment and make any necessary adjustments. Pace the other bar end into the couper unti it pushes up against the first bar and finger tighten the remaining ockshear bots. Check aignment and make any adjustments. On one haf of the couper, starting from the centre and working outwards, party tighten the ockshear bots using either a ratchet wrench or a nut runner as appropriate. Do not use impact toos. Repeat again, this time fuy tightening the ockshear bots unti the bot heads shear off. Repeat the above for the other haf of the couper. 15

16 Reinforcing Bar Coupers MBT Transition Series* The MBT Transition series of coupers provides an effective soution for connecting bars of different diameters. Transition coupers have a the benefits of the ET series and are designed to achieve faiure oads higher than 110% of the characteristic yied strength of grade 500 reinforcing bar. d Repair and Remedia Work For appications invoving repacement of corroded or damaged bars, the repacement bar is cut approximatey 5mm shorter to aow cearance for insertion between the sound ends of the origina bars. MBT coupers are pushed fuy over both ends of the repacement bar and temporariy hed in position. The repacement bar is then correcty positioned and the coupers moved to a previousy marked position on the existing bars indicating haf the ength of the couper. The ockshear bots are tightened to compete the instaation. d2 They can be instaed without any preparation to the bar ends and without any need to rotate bars. The couper can be rotated to aow access to the bots for tightening with either a ratchet wrench or a nut runner. In a cases heavy duty sockets shoud be used. 18 Reinforcing Bar Coupers MBT Headed Anchors MBT Headed Anchors are designed to provide dead end embedment for bars in concrete. This heps to reduce congestion and simpify the pacement of rebars by removing the need for hooked ends. The Anchor comprises haf an MBT couper with a pate weded to one end which carries the fu tension oad of the bar when it is bearing against the concrete. The pates are suppied with a hoe, aowing bars to either pass through or terminate in the couper. The MBT Headed Anchor aso has the added advantage of requiring no specia bar end preparation. 19 Other Ancon Products Reinforcement Continuity Systems Reinforcement Continuity Systems are an increasingy popuar means of maintaining continuity of reinforcement at construction joints in concrete. The Ancon Keybox system eiminates the need to dri shuttering and can simpify formwork design, thereby acceerating the construction process. It is avaiabe in both standard units and specia configurations. Ancon KSN threaded anchors eiminate the need for o n-site bar straightening and are avaiabe for use with 12mm, 16mm and 20mm diameter reinforcement. The system is aso avaiabe with a re-useabe rebate former. Shear Load Connectors Ancon DSD and ESD Shear Load Connectors are used to transfer shear across expansion and contraction joints in concrete. They are more effective at transferring oad and aowing movement to take pace than standard dowes, and can be used to eiminate doube coumns at structura movement joints in buidings. A Lockabe dowe is aso avaiabe for temporary movement joints in post-tensioned concrete frames. Punching Shear Reinforcement Ancon Shearfix is used within a sab to provide additiona reinforcement from punching shear around coumns. The system consists of doube-headed stee studs weded to fat rais and is designed to suit the oad conditions and sab depth at each coumn using free cacuation software from Ancon.
