BROAD PURPOSE OF COURSE This curse is an intrductin t the materials and techniques used in painting with an emphasis n il painting. It will cver mastery f techniques, cmpsitin, and clr as vehicles f visual expressin. The curse designed t intrduce basic fundamentals f il painting with an emphasis n perceptive and technical skills. Basic elements and principles f art are explred as they relate t graphic expressin with paint. Additinally, this curse is designed t becme knwledgeable f varius tpics and vcabulary in painting such as line, tne, perspective, prprtin and cmpsitin. Anther purpse f this curse is t develp als basic critical skills in visual art and t expand elements f visual thinking and visual vcabulary. TEACHING METHOD (lecture, labratry, audi-visual, clinical experience, discussin, seminar, tutrial) This curse will include lectures, slide and/r vide presentatins, demnstratins, studi wrk, field trips, critiques and discussins. 4. GRADING POLICY (i.e., number f graded assignments, weight given t each) Attendance: Attendance is mandatry. Students are required t be n time and attend all class sessins. Mre than 3 absences will result in class failure. Three late classes are equal t ne absence. An excused absence must be accmpanied by a signed nte by a medical prfessinal. In this shrt intensive curse, yu are expected t be in class and wrking fr the fur day a week schedule that meets fr 5 weeks. Grading: 7 prjects will be graded with ne drpped grade frm thse 7 prjects. 5. The larger the better. 4. Stretched r prepared canvas r canvas bard f varying sizes. At least ne canvas per week (This is a 5-week class) will be needed. 18 x 24 maximum large canvas, and 9 x 12 minimum size canvas r canvas bard 5. Paint Clrs: A limited assrtment is suggested. Blded typed clr is primary clr chice per clr family clr f STUDENT GRADE OIL PAINTS. a. Primary Clrs: Red: Cadmium medium r Cadmium Light, Vermilln. Yellw: (Cadmium medium r light, Lemn, Naples yellw Blue: Ultramarine, Cbalt, Phthal, r Prussian) b. Titanium White: (Large tube 16.5 unces) Black: (Ivry r Mars r Lamp Black) c. Alizarin Crimsn d. 6 Clr Thery and Pigment Clr Thery fr Visual Artists Primary Pigment Clrs: We knw as Red, Yellw and Blue. Other texts smetimes cnsider these clrs as primary when they talk abut paint: Magenta (Alizarin Crimsn), Yellw (Cadmium Yellw Med.), Cyan Blue (Cbalt Blue) Secndary Pigment Clrs: Magenta + Yellw= Orange Cyan Blue + Yellw = Green Magenta + Cyan Blue = Vilet Black pigment is the additin f the Primary Clrs f Pigment: Magenta + Prussian Blue + Cadmium Yellw = Black (usually need a little mre blue in the mixture) Cmplementary Clrs f Pigment: Yellw cmplements Dark Blue (Prussian Blue) Magenta (Crimsn) cmplements Green Cyan Blue cmplements Red (Cadmium Red) Terms Abut Kinds f Clr What is clr? A physilgical reactin f the bdy t light in the atmsphere reacting with the back f the retina and sending a signal t the brain. The spectrum f light in nature is reprduced with varius pigments t make clr. Clr wheel: A device t rganize the spectrum f clr and theretically apply clr relatinships and reactin in a tl t help understand kinds f clr cmbinatins. Primary Clr: Clr that can nt be reprduced r mixed by any ther clr Secndary Clr: The mixture f tw primary clrs t get a third clr. Tertiary Clr: The mixture f a primary and secndary clr t prduce a third clr. Warm (Aggressive) Clr: Are clrs that are at the yellw, range, red range and red end f the spectrum Cl (Receding) Clr: Are clrs that are at the green, blue, blue vilet and vilet end f the spectrum Additive Clr: Clrs that are added tgether t prduce anther clr. Pigments are additive clrs. Fr example: Red + Yellw + Blue = Black Subtractive Clr: Clrs that are added tgether t prduce lack f clr. Light is subtractive clr. Fr example: Red + Yellw + Blue = White (lack f clr) Value: The lightness r darkness f a clr. Clr Cntrast: The difference between values (tnes) r hues, as we talk abut clr Hue: Means values in a clr family like red t pink, yellw t pale yellw r blue t midnight blue Clr Range: The Value r Hue scale frm light t dark that a visual pssesses in an art prduct. Pure Clr: Clr that is nt changed by any ther clr (r clr right ut f the tube) Lcal Clr: The specific true clr f an bject in daylight nt being affected by anther bject. Tnal Clr: Lcal clr that is changed by the effects f light and shadw n an bject. Reflected r Envirnmental Clr: Clrs reflected n, r arund, r surrunded, the bject that changed the bjects lcal clr. 6
7 Tint: Additin f white t a clr t change the value r hue f the clr Shade: Additin f black t a clr t change the value r hue f the clr Tne (with regards t clr): Additin f grey t change the value r hue f the clr. Neutral clr: A mixture f the primary clrs + mre f ne primary. Earth tnes, grey are cnsidered neutral clrs. Thermal Clr: Clrs that are affected by the temperature f light in the atmsphere. Cmplementary Clr: Clr created by an equal mixture f tw primary clrs that is ppsite the ther primary clr n the clr wheel. Analgus Clr: When three clrs adjacent t each ther n the clr wheel are used. Fr example, blue, blue-vilet and vilet Meldic Clr: When yu use a single clr and achieve different clrs and tnes by the additin f black and white t that same single clr. Harmnius Clr: Is the use f ne single clr that is meldic (dminant) in character that is accmpanied by three clrs frm the ppsite side f the clr wheel. The minimum amunt f clrs wuld then be fur clrs. Meldic dminant clr: range, harmnius clrs wuld be blue, blue-green and green. The value relatinships f these clrs will als affect their harmnius qualities. Mnchrmatic Clr: Using ne shade, tint, r tne f ne specific clr. Plychrmatic clr: Using mre than ne shade, tint, r tne, r clr in a cmpsitin. Achrmatic Clr: a visual that is nly white, black and grey. Chrma: Greek wrd synnymus with the wrd clr Saturatin: The cncentratin f pigment n a grund, r its clr strength. Opacity: The density f a clr n the grund r surface f a wrk. Hw well a clr clrs a surface in thickness, viscsity and ability t cver. Transparency: The applicatin f a clr that still enables the grund t shw thrugh a dilutin r situatin where pacity is nt the case. Dilutin: When a clrs cncentratin is altered thrugh the mixing f anther medium, such as water, alchl, turpentine, thinners. The strength f that clr is weakened by the additin f this diluting medium. Clr temperature: The clness r warmness f a clr, cmpsitin r part f a visual relating t where it sits n the clr wheel and the spectrum Clr intensity: The brightness r dullness f a clr. Usually a clr is brightened by adding a pure clr, r primary. A clr is made dull r muted by the additin f a neutral clr, black, grey, and white. Clr Key: A dminant clr existing in a grup f clrs, r cmpsitin. Smetimes refers t the dminant clr in the range f clrs in the cmpsitin. Diad: Using 2 clrs that are 2 clrs apart n the clr wheel (meaning ne clr is between them. 7
8 Triad: A clr scheme in which 3 clrs are equally spaced frm each ther. An example f this wuld be all three secndary clrs used in the same cmpsitin. Tetrad: A cntrast r cmbinatin f 4 clrs n the clr wheel in sme relatinship t each ther. 8
