1 Advanced Placement Studi Art Wheeler High Schl Instructr Jeannie Kane The Advanced Placement Studi Art curse is designed fr students wh are seriusly interested in the practical experience f art. The examinatin is based n the submissin f the student s prtfli at the end f the class. The AP Studi Art prgram sets a natinal standard fr perfrmance in the visual arts that cntributes t the significant rle the arts play in academic envirnments. Each year thusands f prtflis are submitted in AP Studi Art and are reviewed by cllege, university and secndary schl Art Instructrs using rigrus standards. This Cllege Bard prgram prvides the nly natinal standard fr perfrmance in the visual arts that allws students t earn cllege credit and r advanced placement while still in high schl. Studi Art Advanced Placement 2-D design, 3-D design, and Drawing, is an 18 week prgram (five 90 minute blcks fr each f the 18 weeks). The class is mixed between the three prtfli curses because f scheduling and the number f students enrlled in the AP Studi Art prgram. The AP Studi Curse addressed three majr cncerns (1) a sense f quality in a student wrk (2) the student s cncentratin n a particular interest (3) the student s need fr breadth f experience in the frmal, technical, and expressive means f the artist. (C1) All students have been encuraged t participate in the Advanced Art Prgram fr at least ne year (tw advanced classes) befre advancing t the AP prgram. During spring registratin fr the cming year s classes, the curse is utlined t the students. The requirements fr each sectin f the prtfli are reviewed and a detailed discussin f the rubrics used t scre the prtfli is held. A handut fr summer assignments are given t the students at this time and a sketchbk is t be kept thrugh the summer. A prtfli f 12 best wrks frm previus advanced art classes is t be cmpiled; this will be the fundatin fr the breadth sectin f the AP Studi curse. (C4) During the first semester f schl, previus wrks are reviewed fr the breadth sectin f the prtfli. Thse nt yet acquired shuld be created befre mving int the AP class. Students are encuraged t sign up fr an Advanced Art class during the fall term t cntinue t build a breadth sectin fr their prtflis. (C4) At the beginning f the AP Studi curse samples f student wrk frm past prtflis are shwn and their scres discussed. Students will address the three cmpnents f the prtfli: Quality (5 wrks which may cme frm Breadth r Cncentratin studies), Breadth (12 wrks

2 displaying mastery f a variety f techniques and media), and Cncentratin (12 wrks describing an in-depth explratin f a particular artistic cncern). (C1) Students are expected t have a bdy f wrk that has been cmpleted in previus cursewrk and can be drawn frm t satisfy the Breadth sectin f the AP prtfli. This can be frm the previus advanced art classes (at least 2 classes), gvernrs Schl (5 summer week prgram), Hnrs Art Academy f UT (ne Saturday), r night classes at UT r Pellissippi State Cmmunity Cllege (apprximately 15 weeks lng), all ther classes shuld be reviewed and apprved by instructr. In additin, summer assignments and assignments given frm utside f class will be designed t demnstrate abilities in versatility with techniques and prblem slving. Students will be expected t pssess the ability t wrk independently t cnduct research, imprve their knwledge f materials, equipment, histric cntent, and take initiative fr prductin. (C4) Advanced Placement Students are encuraged frm the beginning t start thinking abut their cncentratin (sketchbk and prjects). (C3) Students will participate in discussins and critiques f each f their wrks, ne n ne with instructr and will als be critiquing as a grup at regular intervals. (C6) This critique prcess will help students clarify the viability f their prpsed cncentratin. Examples f cncentratins are available thrugh the psters and n line.(c3) Students are expected t have prjects critique ready at the beginning f class n assigned critique days. All students will present his/her wrk and briefly discuss his/her intent. The vcabulary f art, as intrduced in the fundatin curses is reinfrced thrugh the verbal and written critiques. (C6) Instructinal Gals: *Investigate creatively, as well as systematically, frmal and cnceptual issues in the Quality, Cncentratin, and Breadth sectins f the prtfli. *Making art is an nging prcess that invlves yu (the student) in infrmed and critical thinking. *Develp technical skills and familiarize yurself with functins f the visual principles and elements. *Becme independent thinkers wh will cntribute imaginatively and significantly t culture thrugh the making f art. 4 Cncentratin A cncentratin can be a series f wrks that are very cnsistent in theme and apprach r it may evlve and develp as the visual idea is explred, ending in a different place than where it began. In either case it is best t start ut with a clear plan f attack: if the idea changes the change will usually be the natural result f discveries made in the prcess f explratin. Yu explratin shuld g farther than merely taking a subject and executing it in a variety f media r styles. Ideally yu shuld develp a visual language that fits yur idea, a style and medium and frmat apprpriate t the theme yu are investigating. In drawing the use f different appraches t represent frm and space, such as rendering, gestural, painterly, expressinistic, stylized, r abstract frm. Students shuld make an investigatin f expressive mark-making. The sketchbk is an essential tl in recrding ideas, capturing visual infrmatin, wrking n cmpsitinal issues, and just fling arund.

8 Summer Assignments The summer is a perfect time t explre a variety f techniques and ideas that will help t develp a visual vice. There is a packet f assignments that will g hme with students befre summer that will give students ways t wrk in their sketchbk but als give them specific assignments. Yu shuld take yur sketchbk everywhere yu g and sketch in it everyday. Wrking in yur sketchbk is an nging prcess that will help yu make knwledgeable and critical decisins abut the evlutin f yur wrk. (C5) Curse Overview Students will be required t summit every Friday a sketchbk assignment wrth 150 pints. The sketchbk assignment is; 2 drawings/designs frm bservatin and ne drawing/design that has smething written, smething drawn and smething pasted. Yu will be receiving a separate list f ideas fr wrking in yur sketchbk. Week 1: G ver syllabus and AP Studi Pster. Individual Prtfli reviews. Meet with instructr t determine wrk that may be used fr AP prtfli. Set up plan fr cncentratin and begin prjects. Students will participate in Critique 1.Tw prjects are assigned that are due next week. Students begin researching the histry and techniques that will be implemented in the cncentratin sectin f the prtfli. Discussin f cncentratin tpics and review f.al ideas will be discussed n Thursday. Students will be given a presentatin regarding the riginality and integrity f their prtflis and hw t avid plagiarism in their wrk. Friday sketchbk assignments are due. This is t be cllected in their sketchbk jurnal t be checked n critique days. (C4) Sketchbk Jurnal Sketchbks have been kept in all classes and in the summer. This prcess is t cntinue in the AP class. Bring all current and previus sketchbks in fr he first critique. (C4) Evaluatin Assignments Assignments explre a wide variety f appraches t drawing, 2 D design and 3D design and are ften nt media specific. A rubric is given with each assignment. The rubric is brken int 4 cmpnents; cntent, cmpsitin, craftsmanship and cntemplatin. The cntent is left up t the student t fit int their particular cncentratin r breadth. There is a criterin fr the ther cmpnents f the rubric that the student is t address. Cmpsitinal cncerns are addressed by using the principles and elements f design (C2). Craftsmanship is cncerned with quality

10 and mastering a wide range f media and versatility with technique and prblem slving.(c3,c4) Cntemplatin helps the student t reflect upn their decisin making prcess and self critique. (C5) Wrk is evaluated based n the AP Scring Guidelines fr Studi Art. It is imprtant fr AP students t be familiar with the rubric that will be used t scre the wrk in their prtflis. (C6) Critique Critiques are an integrated and vital part fr the AP Studi class. Critiques are frmal (grup), infrmal (ne n ne with students), and written critique (turned in with rubric) Frmal critique is dne as a class during which the students in the class give psitive feedback and ffer suggestins fr imprvement t each individual student. The wrk is always put up n the wall r bards and displayed. The student being critique discuss their intent during the critique. All students participate. Often tw critiques are dne; (mst f the time) ne midway thrugh a prject and (always) ne at the end f the prject, these usually take the entire class. The infrmal critique is mst ften between the individual student and instructr (smetime ther students are asked t participate). The infrmal critique is dne briefly during studi time. The piece is discussed using the same criteria as the frmal critique. The vcabulary f art is intrduced thrugh the fundatin classes and is reinfrced thrugh the verbal and written critique.(c6) Originality and Integrity While the use f apprpriated images is cmmn in the prfessinal art wrks tday, many clleges and art schls cntinue t stress strngly the value f wrking frm direct bservatin. In aspiring t cllege-level wrk, students wh make use f brrwed images shuld demnstrate a creativity and sphisticatin f apprach that transcends mere cpying. This plicy is clearly stated n the AP Studi Art pster and is discussed in class. If yu submit wrk that makes use f phtgraphs, published images, and/r ther artists wrks, yu must shw substantial and significant develpment beynd duplicatin. This may be demnstrated thrugh manipulatin f the frmal qualities, design, and/r cncept f the riginal wrk. It is unethical, cnstitutes plagiarism, and ften vilates cpyright law t simply cpy an image (even in anther medium) that was made by smene else. In evaluatin prtflis, the Readers lk fr riginal thinking. Students are encuraged t create artwrks frm their wn knwledge, experiences, and interests. Cpying wrk in any medium withut significant and substantial manipulatin is an infringement n the riginal artist s rights and can cnstitute plagiarism. Teachers and student are strngly encuraged t becme knwledgeable abut cpyright laws. The grwth in the use f cmputer sftware, scanners xergraphy, and phtgraphy makes this issue f particular cncern. Universities, clleges, and prfessinal schls f art have rigrus plicies regarding plagiarism. AP Studi Art endrses these plicies. (C7)
