Students will be able t creatively express their emtins prvked by the given subject matters. Their bservances and reflectin upn ideas previusly discussed in curricula will lead them int thughts abut the envirnment and its health. Students will be able t express these thughts and feelings twards the subject thrugh the art prcess and discussin. They will als explre deeper int the issues keeping the envirnment healthy and what that entails. Students will begin t explre the prcess f msaic making and creating a symbl t stand fr their thughts abut the given subject f healthy envirnment. Students will participate in a classrm discussin abut their favrite places t visit and the imprtance f why being in a calming/favrite place adds t their mental and physical health. Students will bserve demnstratin f the prcess f creating msaics/clay bdies thrugh seeing it cmpleted and by being shwn made exemplars. Students will learn the imprtance f creating a plan r design fr their wrk and utilize beginning f wrk time t cmplete a brainstrm sketch fr their wrk. Students will begin wrk n prject and start t frm ideas n hw expressive thughts can be cmmunicated thrugh the medium. Vcabulary: 2-D: smething that has tw dimensins, is flat, and has height and width. 3-D: smething that has three dimensins, width, length, and depth. Clay: naturally ccurring material cmpsed primarily f fine-grained minerals, which shw plasticity thrugh a variable range f water cntent, and which can be hardened when dried and/r fired Msaic: the art f creating images with an assemblage f small pieces f clred glass, stne, r ther materials. It may be a technique f decrative art r f cultural and spiritual significance. Glass: is ften extended t all amrphus slids (and melts that easily frm amrphus slids), including plastics, resins, r ther silica-free amrphus slids Landscape: cmprises the visible features f an area f land, including physical elements such as landfrms, living elements f flra and fauna, abstract elements like lighting and weather cnditins, and human elements like human activity and the built envirnment. Envirnment: yur surrundings, what is arund yu. Cmpsitin: the rganizatin r gruping f the different parts f a wrk f art s as t achieve a unified whle. Abstract: f r pertaining t the frmal aspect f art, emphasizing lines, clrs, generalized r gemetrical frms, etc, especially with reference t their relatinship t ne anther. Design: t plan r sketch ut befre beginning wrk n a prject Layer: a thickness f sme material lie n r spread ver a surface. Clr: the visual perceptual prperty crrespnding in humans t the categries called red, yellw, blue and thers. Pattern: type f theme f recurring events f r bjects, smetimes referred t as elements f a set. 6 Students will be asked t make sure that they are t clean up their persnal area and their table at the end f class Prcedures: SKETCHBOOK TIME: (10 minutes) Students shuld grab their sketchbks and nametags as they walk in Parents shuld sign them in n the sign n sheet Students will wrk n their sketchbks n the frnt rugs where the materials are prvided Prmpt: Create sketches f emtins they feel and/r images f themselves and what they d when they visit certain places (ex. schl, the park, vacatin, hme, etc.) INTRODUCTION: (5 minutes) Intrduce new STs names, fun fact abut themselves, age, where we re frm? Talk abut what grades we ve been teaching & maybe ne r tw f the prjects we ve dne Reiterate sme f their prjects and cncepts they ve learned talk abut curriculum let them knw that yu are fully aware f what has been ging n previus t yu being there! DISCUSSION: (15 minutes) What des it mean t be healthy? Hw can we apply this t everyday life? We all knw hw t be healthy eating right and staying active! Tday we re ging t talk abut ur WORLD being healthy Teachers will then facilitate questins twards the students asking them abut the envirnment! What is an envirnment?! What makes smething thriving?! 7 Intr prject and its cmpnents!! MOSAIC (hw the pieces cme tgether t frm an image r idea)! Talk with students abut clr! Talk abut primary and secndary clrs! Prmpt fr prject: What des the envirnment mean t yu? Represent it fr us! Ideas (water, fire, earth, trees, grass, recycling, cnservatin) and use the msaic pieces t illustrate this envirnmental issue. DEMONSTRATIONS: (15 minutes) PREPARATION: The teacher will start by bringing the students arund the dem table after the discussin and the Pwerpint presentatin. Please keep yur hands t yurself this way, we can get thrugh the demnstratin and yu can start wrking! Make sure all the students are able t see. First, The first thing yu shuld d is t prtect yur wrk surface and yurself. Make sure the table is cvered with paper! Rll up yur sleeves! These are the tls we will be using: knives, cutting clay tl, rlling pin. Shw hw t use these befre starting the prepping f the clay. I want t see a variety f shapes and sizes tday! These pieces are yurs s make them the way yu want yur idea f the envirnment t be illustrated! This is my msaic piece see the shape I used and hw it ges alng with my idea? I haven t finished yet, but yu can already see the picture and hw the clrs and shape all add t that PREPPING THE CLAY: Set yur clay n yur tray, students shuld put a piece f tape n this tray and write dwn their names n the tape. Nw, it is time t prepare the clay fr making a mld. Use the rlling pin t rll ut yur piece f clay. Clay shuld n bigger than a 9 in by 9 in piece but n smaller than 6 in by 6 in. Als, the clay shuld be abut! inch deep. Teacher will shw this by ruler and make sure the students are able t measure ut their pieces. 7

8 Demnstrate rlling ut piece and making sure it s smth and withut air bubbles. Once, the piece is rlled ut, they can start t frm it int the shape they want. Make sure they are aware that the shape shuld reflect what their idea fr their msaic is get creative! When dne with the clay prtin f this prject, students shuld wrap their pieces in a garbage bag tightly s that it will be wet and wn t dry ut. This is critical t the utcme f their prject! S what s the first step? Nw the secnd etc until they are aware f the steps and the prcess fr tday. DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (40 minutes) Students will sit at their tables. Students will be asked t sketch ut their idea n a piece f paper fr 15 minutes they shuld use this time t make this intricate shape f clay, msaic clrs chsen (n mre than 5 clrs), and size. This idea paper will be used fr reference fr this week and next Saturday! After the 15 minutes, the students will be asked t cme get their materials by table. Whichever table is the mst quiet will get t g up first. Prmpt students t begin their wrk. Students shuld write their name n the tray they will be wrking n. Students shuld start rlling ut the clay and wrking with it t make a shape. They shuld make sure that there are n air bubbles and that the piece is smth and thick. 8

9 Student creating clay base slab. Fall CLEAN UP: (5 minutes) Any f their materials shuld be returned t the distributin area.! Each separate piece shuld be put back int the crrect bin. The teachers will g arund and hand ut Ziplc bags during this time. The students shuld put their pieces int the large ziplck bags with their name n the garbage bag as well and put them nt the cart. This will be prmpted by quietest table. They shuld wash their hands and make sure that their area is cmpletely clean. Once everything is clean, students can return t the carpet t get ready fr clsure. CLOSURE: (5 minutes) Review the tpics f the day talk abut envirnment, the artists wrk, and what the envirnment des fr us.! What artwrk did we lk at?! Hw did that relate t the prject that we are making?! MOSAICS clr/pattern! Hw des the envirnment affect yu n a daily basis? Talk abut challenges and strng pints f wrk day:! What was smething that was a challenge fr yu tday?! What turned ut well?! What types f shapes did yu see yur peers wrking with? Thank students fr a great wrkday! 9

10 ! Take the time t grab 2-3 prjects and shw ff that students wrking clay piece.! Thank them fr being attentive and wrking diligently since this is a 2 week prject. Tday was a gd day, but smetimes we weren t always listening let s wrk n that next week because if we pen ur ears and clse ur muths, we re ging t get t wrk and have mre time! Alright, s next week, is the msaic part f the piece! Yu have yur ideas all laid ut, but this week, think abut the envirnment and cme back next Saturday with 2-3 ways that it affected yu this week. Maybe yu ll recycle smething r turn ff the water while yu brush yur teeth! This will help us brainstrm next week, s make sure t cme with ideas! Have a fabulus week! See yu next Saturday. 10
