3 ARTS 220: Intermediate Painting Professor Erik Shearer Office: 3715A Contact: or cell (707) Course Information This course meets on Monday / Wednesday from 9:30 12:20 Course Description This studio course is a continuation of the pictorial problems and material techniques of painting introduced in ARTS 120, focusing on more complex and varied subject matter, media and concepts. Special emphasis is placed on the development of creative, individualized approaches to materials and content. Student Learning Outcomes Students successfully completing this course should be able to: 1. Produce paintings that successfully incorporate historical and contemporary approaches to representation, creative expression, and materials. 2. Evaluate and critique finished paintings and receive criticism from others. 3. Develop and express conceptual and material intentions in written and oral formats and apply these to the creation of finished paintings. 4. Safely handle and maintain materials, studio facilities, and equipment. Course Objectives To meet the above outcomes, students will learn to: 1. Create a portfolio of paintings that demonstrates the ability to: Design and produce paintings with an intermediate understanding of the physical properties and working characteristics of a variety of paints, pigments and mediums. Identify and solve intermediate pictorial problems related to traditional and contemporary representational painting methods, materials, and concepts. Experiment with and construct paintings utilizing non- traditional pictorial formats and concepts including; abstract, non- objective, multiple- panel or mixed media paintings. Produce paintings based on individual interpretation of topical assignments and problems. 2. Develop and express conceptual and material intentions in written and oral formats and apply these to the creation of a finished series of paintings. 4. Evaluate paintings orally and in writing using correct terminology related to concepts, materials and techniques. 5. Critique finished paintings and receive criticism from others 6. Understand and apply all safety rules and precautions related to the handling, storage and disposal of all painting materials and residues. Course Structure Approximately two- thirds of our class time during the semester is used for production and practice in the studio; the remaining third is used for critiques, lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and readings of contemporary and historical texts on the practice of art. Individual and group critiques are the primary means of assessing student progress in this course and will be held on a regular basis. Lectures and demonstrations related to course assignments are presented regularly.

4 Attendance and Conduct Students who miss more than two class periods without verified, official documentation excusing their absence or who fail to arrange their absence in advance may be dropped from the course. Students arriving more than 15 minutes late or leaving before the end of the class period are counted as absent, unless they have made previous arrangements with the instructor. Painting requires consistent, focused engagement. Be fully present and ready to work hard each day. Cell phones, ipods and other electronic devices are not allowed in this classroom except by special permission. Failure to comply with this policy will result in dismissal from class. Grading and Assessment The final grade in this course is determined by student performance on: Paintings Written assignments including self- evaluations Participation in group and individual critiques, Quizzes covering vocabulary, materials, and safety Written project proposals and reports Your work will be evaluated at multiple intervals during the semester where I will issue an interim grade and give you feedback on your progress in class. Your final grade is composed of an aggregated score in four areas that are weighted on the following percentages: Final Portfolio: 50% Journal and Homework 10% Critiques and self- evaluations: 20% Quizzes and written reports: 20% Assignments This course meets for 6 hours of total class time each week, which provides adequate time for most students to complete in- class assignments. Additionally, students are expected to spend an average of 3 hours per- week on outside of class assignments, for a total of 9 hours per week of work for this course. In- class: The initial list of in- class studio assignments is provided on the attached class schedule. Please note that the instructor reserves the right to adjust the assignment schedule at his discretion. Outside of Class: Additionally, each student will be required to keep a studio journal with a minimum of 3 drawings or paintings each week, representing approximately 2-3 hours of work outside of class. This course will also require written proposals, reports, and critiques requiring outside- of- class work, averaging 0-1 hours of work outside of class each week. Student Success The Art Department at NVC is dedicated to fostering student success in all academic endeavors. To this end, students are encouraged to discuss educational and professional goals with the instructor and to work with a counselor to develop an educational plan. Our college also offers a wide range of learning and assistance services including tutoring, diagnostic learning services, and accommodations for specific learning disabilities. Students requiring assistance for disabilities or learning needs, please meet with me after the first class to make arrangements for proper accommodations.
