2 The Pine Needle Press Page 2 SEPTEMBER PRESIDENT S MEETING Hello fellow quilters, I hope everyone had a great summer. I certainly did. So much so, that I m having trouble getting back into the Guild meeting schedule. I signed up for a quilting retreat the first week of September, not remembering it was the meeting week. So unfortunately I ll miss the meeting. But, I ll be thinking of you all! Lorna will run the meeting and I m sure will keep everyone laughing. We won t have a speaker or a workshop this month as unfortunately our speaker had to cancel. But, the Committee Service team will be putting on a Quiltapalooza on Sept 5 at the LDS church in Nevada City, where you can sit and sew with friends, and create quilts for the needy in our community. Have a great meeting on Tuesday September 4 at the Grass Valley Charter School and hopefully come and join the Quiltapalooza for at least a little while on September 5. 3 The Pine Needle Press Page 3 From the Editor: Many thanks to Holly Miner and Kris Cook who made sure the newsletter was published while I had carpal tunnel issues and surgery. I appreciate all they did. Thanks, also, to all of you who sent good wishes on my recovery and sympathy on the death of my sister. I was touched by the kind words, cards and flowers. Your support is definitely better than any therapy! Thanks again Sue Miller Community Service QUILTAPALOOZA... A MODERN SEWING BEE OF SERVICE AND SOCIALIZING WITH FRIENDS DOING WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO! BRING YOUR MACHINE TO SEW AND/OR YOUR ENERGY TO HELP WITH NON SEWING TASKS WHILE HELPING YOUR NEVADA COUNTY NEIGHBORS! We never know where the need will be in our county... locally, North San Juan, Truckee, or other areas within the county... or when that need will strike - could your home or family be next? WHAT: A Pine Tree Quilt Guild sponsored committee sewing for county residents who need a helping hand -- those who have lost their homes to fire or other disaster AND individuals and families in crisis -- Domestic Violence, Adult and Child Protective Services, CASA, Foster Youth, Homeless, and more. WHEN: Wednesday, 05 September 2018 and 03 October 2018 WHERE: LDS Church, Hollow Way, Nevada City (off the Gold Flat exit) TIME: 9:00-5:00, clean up 5:00-5:30. Choose the time that works for you -- an hour, portion of the day, or the entire day! RSVP: Sign up by contacting Pavana, Nancy, or Marjorie - Indicate what time you will be attending so that we have adequate sewing space PROVIDED: Kits for tops, quilt sandwiches to quilt, and quilts to bind, and a few UFO's. All supplies -- cutting mats, rulers, rotary cutters, thread, extension cords, irons and boards, etc. If you prefer, bring your own fabric and pattern or come by CS before and select fabric and use your pattern or ours. We have four sewing machines available - let us know if you need one. ENERGY BOOSTERS AVAILABE: Sweets, savories, water, fruit, and more. Community Service has been helping Nevada County families since the Guild was formed. We were there to help families involved in the devastating 49'er and Trauner Fires which involved Tyler Foot Road and HIghway 49, Lake Wildwood and Big Oak Valley, Highway 49, Rough and Ready, and Newtown Road. We also helped families who lost their homes in Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Sarah with her missionary work, and the disastrous Weed Fire.

4 The Pine Needle Press Page 4 Commuunity Service Continued. THE COMMUNITY WE SUPPORT - PLEASE NOTIFY US of other agencies or individuals. Debbie McDonald, Utah s Place, sent this photograph of the quilts used in the dining room this past February when they provided an extra 20 beds. See photo at right. CHILDREN and FAMILIES served by CASA, CPS, and Domestic Violence. JUVENILE to TWIN size are needed. FIRE LOSS community members who have lost their homes to fire or other causes. We need every size baby to queen/king for families. Graduating FOSTER YOUTH Each year we provide up to ten TWIN size to help these students make their way as they graduate high school and leave the foster care system. In May we supported six Foster Youth and two students at Earle Jamieson High School when they graduated. The students received quilts, pillows, pillowcases, and tote bags useful for carrying laundry, books, or groceries to prepare them as they go out on their own. HOME BOUND SENIORS Nevada County Adult Protective Services works to keep seniors at home and out of convalescent care. We try to give 10 LAP quilts each month. HOSPITALITY HOUSE clients are enrolled in training programs and moving out into their own housing. We try to give 10 TWIN quilts each m5onth. We have kits available or you may select fabrics from our stash that interest you; use your favorite pattern or select from our collection. Quilts are also ready for quilting and binding. Quilting a CS quilt is a great opportunity to hone your machine quilting skills and need not be fancy stitch in the ditch, meander, or sew wavy lines top to bottom, side to side, corner to corner. Help is always needed to sort donations, make kits, prepare quilt tops and sandwiches, attach labels, sew up backs, and prepare quilts for the agencies to pick up. Anyone can participate members and non-members bring a friend! Come for an hour, half day, or all day. We meet 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m., third Thursday of each month. Want to help but cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? Contact Marjorie, Nancy, or Pavana, for other arrangements CS DAYS September 20 October 18 November 15 December NO CS LOCATION: The Nevada County Historical Society building, across from the CDF/Cal-Fire Department, Earle Jamieson High School, and next to Sierra Presbyterian Church. Whether it is an illness, surgery, or loss of a loved one, please let Mary Ross know so she can send an appropriate card. Thanks.Mary Ross Share and Care Chairperson (see roster for Mary s phone & ) Hey all you mysterious quilters! Remember to bring your quilt to do yet another group showing at guild this month! It's always fun to see the different interpretations! Also, I may have clues available for the all new mystery, but it will depend on if they arrive on time. 7 The Pine Needle Press Page 7 Patchwork Star for September 2018 Michelle Gaudinier Father, Father Come and see Pony See Tom ride Tom can ride Pony Tis a fitting excerpt from yesteryear's classic reader, framed and displayed prominently, evoking bygone days and a happy heart. Boldly stating, I love bringing back the past, Michelle bought her first antique at age 18 a Hoosier cabinet! A carefully appointed shadow box displays Mom's sewing notions. A circa 1920's Singer with velvet covering are juxtaposed with her modern serger and a modest Bernina. Michelle's traditional quilts are often nicely completed by Star Designs longarm quilting. Touches of whimsy and storybook characters are reflected in a time-honored patina of reds and blues, with a generous sprinkling of soft petal pinks. Intimate nooks and themed vignettes bespeak an unhurried softness. There's even an antique crib in her granddaughter's favorite guest room, ready for occupation. Michelle is always on the prowl for depression themes, 30's reproduction prints and American Jane motifs. Bouncing playfully from their cages in the front office, Daisy the bulldog and Scooter the Westie greet us with pent up energy. This duo has the run of the house, always hoping for a tasty treat. Husband Bill and Grandson Conor and Granddaughter Ellie spend a lot of time in the pool. A big yard is ideal for summer barbeques, music and entertaining. A screened sun room dressed in nostalgic Americana gives views to a well-manicured lawn. In wintertime Michelle and Bill host indoors. With a large living space and newly remodeled kitchen, antique furniture is kid and dog friendly. A glittering and formidable chandelier from Europe greets guests in the dining room. Quilts are strewn about and available for people or animals to cuddle in. Michelle works on two projects at a time where nothing in her studio arena is out of place. Quilts are homespun and traditionally simple, packing a lot of punch. Formerly a teacher and elementary school principal, she has had little time to delve deeply. But, on the horizon a unique style has emerged. There is much depth to her journey. Even hand applique is in the offering. Michelle's 80 year old Victorian home, like a dreamy lullabye, evokes serenity that is intimate and sublime. Coming from fast-paced Brentwood, Ca. She says, I wanted to find an old house in an old town. Aren't we lucky she did?! Jeanie Ferguson Patchwork Star Reporter
