2 The Pine Needle Press Page 2 President s Message What a gorgeous day! Many people will start working outside on their yards; however, the Quilt Show s coming up. There is still time to submit your 2016 Judged Entry form. The form is due no later than 2:00 pm Thursday, March 17, They are to be sent to Nancyan Tracy at her home the address is on the form. The same deadline applies for the 2016 Show Only Entry forms. It all seems so easy, so why not fill out your form and submit it today!! The annual March Mixer is our next meeting and Vice President Susie Hardy has an exciting evening set up for us. This meeting is traditionally (I think I can say that since this format has been going on for 4 years now) for new members to find out more about the guild and meet other members. It is a perfect opportunity to bring a friend or family member, who is not a member, and introduce them to the guild. The Guild Challenge entries will also be displayed and judged at the meeting. See you at the next meeting which is at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Osborne Road in Grass Valley. Regular time, just a different location. The church also has a function that evening, so parking may be limited. Consider carpooling or arriving early. SILENT AUCTION Diane Klose Silent Auction is now accepting donations and Quilt Show signups! Bags, table runners, small quilts, wall hangings, or?. Last year changes made to the bidding process were quite successful: donors were asked to set a minimum bid to cover the cost of their materials, to set a "Buy it now" price for those who did not want to chance losing the item, and incremental increases between $2 and $5. Three items were sold at a much higher "Buy it now" price. These changes will be continued this year. Your participation by donating items would be appreciated by the guild. 9 The Pine Needle Press Page 9 New Members Jill Schlageter (joined 2015) I have been married for 40 years with 2 children and 3 grands. We retired in Dec to Lake Wildwood from Morgan Hill, CA. I started quilting in I love all types of quilting but gravitate to art quilts and machine quilting. I love learning new techniques and will try anything! Nancy Holtz (joined 2015) I am originally from Norwalk, Calif and have lived in the GV/NC area for 35 years. I relocated to this area because of family. My husband, Hal, and I have been married for 13 years. We have 6 acres in Chicago Park and enjoy working on the property and traveling. I also enjoy gardening, knitting, and being with friends. My son lives in Sausalito and my step son lives in Vancouver, Washington. We have 1 grandchild. We attend Sierra Presbyterian Church in Nevada City. This is my 45th year of being a nurse and my 15th year of working as a nurse practitioner. Currently, I work 3-5 hours/week in a local doctor's office. I have taken 3 beginning quilt classes in the past year with have given me NOT enough experience to complete a Christmas quilt from 1 year ago. PTQG seems quite organized and I hope to make use of the teaching classes. Pine Tree Quilt Guild has many new members to introduce to you. We asked those who joined in the last year or so to write short biographies so you can know them better. Here are those we have received so far. Look for these ladies at guild meetings and welcome them to the guild. Watch this page over the next months for new members and more bios. Ardy Tobin and Jill Schlageter, Hospitality Welcome to new members who joined in 2016: January 2016 Doresa Robinson, Stephanie Cohelan, Rena Criss, Mari Weaver, Lisa LaBarbera, Robi Holmen, Lorri Spencer, Susan Maxwell, Constance Clover, Star Parker and a new affiliate, Friends Around the Block Quilt Shop in Colusa February 2016 Jean Marie McDonald, Gina Lovejoy, Shelley vonbrincker Jane Dunnington (joined 2015) We are relatively new: moved to north Auburn 3 years ago from Virginia, near Washington, DC. Two of our children live here or in the Bay area and both have kids, so all of our four grandchildren are here. I started quilting about 40 years ago with piecing and hand quilting, but didn t have free time to do it once I had children and work. I have only made baby quilts until I retired. Now I ve made 2 twin sized quilts for charity, and a queen sized one as a gift I am open to learning and enjoy transparency and modern applications of traditional pieced patterns. I look to expand my skills and to make friends with similar interests. Joanna Weiss (joined 2015) I have been in Grass Valley since My husband died in 2008 so locally the household is me and my yellow lab. Youngest daughter lives in Elk Grove with the 3 grandboys and my oldest daughter lives in Tucson where she is a Professor of Renaissance Literature. I took my first quilting class right after I moved to Grass Valley. This was followed by a great craziness for making small quilts. Somewhere along the line, I stopped. So I am now getting back up to speed and my head is full of things to do! I only need help staying on track. As I have started quilting again, I am finding my interest leans toward art quilts of one sort or another. I am working on a quilt for my grand niece and there will be odd spaces to be filled in which I hope complete with my niece s hands traced and sent to me from Florida. For other pieces, I am going to be learning beading. So many things! From the guild I hope to gain knowledge and inspiration are foremost followed closely by the sense of community the guild provides. Being in the company of bright and creative women is a wonderful thing.

10 The Pine Needle Press Page 10 Patchwork Star for March 2016 Jill Schlageter Little Miss Muffet sat on a Tuffet, eating her curds and whey Along came a spider and sat down beside her, and scared Miss Muffet away NOT! A studio stuffed with tuffet stuff: a pin cushion size, a new midsize, and Jill's signature hassock size. She's ready to give classes to quilters in San Jose, Morgan Hill, Oakland, Grass Valley: wherever. When it's hot it's hot. And, right now it's hot! As we learned in February's presentation, Jill's passion is for Kaffe Fassett's bold, lustful jewel-like leaves, lilies and cabbages. Uncounted beauteous quilts appear throughout her multi-level home gracing four king-sized beds and a decorative wooden ladder rack made by her cabinetmaker son. A Hoffman color palette panel depicting a dreamscape of batik choices gives Jill a playful profusion of that next possible color. Cheerfully exclaiming: I want to make one of everything, but I like to add my own spin and change up a pattern. She began quilting in 2000 while working at a quilt shop called Whiffle Tree in Cupertino. I had to learn really fast how to put colors together. Husband Kurt has just finished overseeing an enormous edition to their tiny summer home on the lake. Hailing from a family of 7 siblings (including two sets of twins not including Jill) and all their aunts, uncles and kids coming to recreate, much space is needed. Jill's favorite past time has been the patio boat cruising down Deer Creek Inlet. On the 4 th of July the neighbors get together with all their fellow Creekers. Life is good! River otters, herons, egrets and swallowtail butterflies are common sightings. One spring twin fawns were born under their deck. Jill loves to attend classes from the masters. Leading luminaries include Carol Taylor, Gloria Loughman and Katie Pasquini Masopust. Diving into the art quilt scene, Jill will surely bring her share of accolades. Raw edge applique formed from a host of Kaffe favorites brings endearing whimsy and excitement to her subjects. Jill says he did not begin his art endeavors with splashes of color. Subjects were very dull, with a shocking sameness. Oh, but, hasn't that changed. Peering at her king-sized Zen Quilt, she opines: Maybe I should have used a color to calm it down but what the heck, it's Kaffe! Jill owns all of Kaffe's quilting books. Signed by him, too! Her large new studio, a vibrant room steeped in sunshine, is filled with well-appointed IKEA cabinetry. A remote controlled device lifted her Bernina Artista embroidery machine to a higher level, thus exposing three collectible Featherweights. The shiny cute purple one, Jill's favorite, is decorated with an intricate floral motif. Jill, with a winsome smile and undaunted by challenges, has come a long way in a short time. Laura Nownes' book entitled, Quilts! Quilts! Quilts! has featured pictures and instructions for Jill's striped shot cotton masterpiece. It would remind you of a tedious log cabin puzzle but is not. A Viewer's Choice award for a foundation pieced kaleidoscope gave her the impetus to keep on using riotous colors-- those lustful lilacs, fuchsias and lagoon swimming turquoises. Hey, if it works for Kaffe, it works for Jill! Never mind that silly spider.... Patchwork Star Reporter Jeanie Ferguson Mystery Quilt Due to an overwhelming demand, we will be doing another Debbie Caffrey Mystery! Sign ups started at the February meeting, and the first clue, fabric requirements, and cutting instructions will be given out at the March meeting. If you are interested, the cost is $5.50 to play. I look forward to your participation! Frances O'Brien
