Summer is over and the children are back in school. The days are getting shorter and our minds are starting to focus on quilts (if they ever stopped). This is my favorite time of year. The fall air smells so good and it is cooling off. The fall colors inspire me to get creative-not to mention everything Halloween. We are still looking for a Vice president. I have enjoyed my time serving and it has flown by and then you are done. I am having more fun and have met so many members that I didn t know. It is a position that can be shared. You also receive a lot of help from the other board members so you are not in it alone. Our speaker for October 3rd is our very own Terry McFeely speaking all about the fabulous things you can create with Terial Magic. It should be a wonderful learning experience. There will be no workshop this month. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions or comments please contact me. Susie Hardy susiehardy@comcast.net

Please write your reasons and comments on the back of this page. I nominate for the 2019 Featured Quilter. We lived there for 10 years and loved it, but were ready to live closer to town, family, amenities, and a major airport. I've been quilting (piecing/sewing) for about 7 years now and love it. I now have a computerized long arm machine along with a 12 foot table. I've been playing with it for about 1 1/2 years now. I only do all over designs. No custom work. I'm still a newbie. I did some quilting for the guild up north and would be happy to help with some charity quilts here in Grass Valley. I'm interested primarily in making charity quilts and would love to learn how to paper piece.

4 The Pine Needle Press Page 4 Guild Challenge Women; The Good, The Bad, The Beautiful That is the challenge for this year. Your piece does not have to include all of the description. It can have any one, two or three. Use your imagination (I know you all have good ones). The good, the bad and the ugly are up to you. Everyone sees things differently and what may be good to one person might be bad to another. There are some NEW RULES for this year. 1 The maximum size is 144. That would be up to 36 square, if you make it square. It can be any shape and size as long as the outside edge measures no more than Please keep what you are making a secret. We would like everyone to be surprised by what shows up in March. 3 They are due at the March Guild Meeting. Please bring them to the meeting in a pillowcase or plain bag so it remains a secret until after the break. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded after the break. Voting categories will remain the same. Favorite Quilt; Best Use of Theme; Best Traditional; Best Appliqué; Best Art; and Most Humorous. Your quilt can be traditional, pieced, appliqué, art, fused, beaded, painted, dyed, etc., A mixture of any or all, whatever works for you. It can be any color or colors that you want. Affiliate of the Month Sandra Bruce Creative Longarm Sandra Bruce, owner 118 W. Main St. 5B or sandrabruce@pacbell.net I have been self-employed since 1983 when I started my business. I began as a calligrapher/letterer and added illustration a couple of years later. I am basically self-taught although I have taken many classes and workshops in various areas of art. In addition to my career doing illustration and lettering I am a long-arm quilter with a 14' Gammill machine in a studio in downtown Grass Valley. This allows me to not only do the finishing stitching for customers' quilts but to create my own art quilts as well. I bring my illustration and lettering experience into play by free-motion quilting images and words into the stitching I do. Most long arm quilters have patterns or computers built into their machines, but I have neither, my work is all freehand. In 2013 I began teaching and lecturing (to guilds and in quilt shops) my latest quilting technique, "Material Matrix". Please refer to my website for more information.

6 The Pine Needle Press Page 6 COMMUNITY SERVICES THANK YOU To all of you who turned in quilt tops, finished quilts, pillow cases and fabric at the September meeting. The feedback from the recipients is that they truly appreciate and value the quilts and that our Guild provides them this comfort. SEPTEMBER DISTRIBUTION Quilts were given to two Grass Valley men who lost their home and all their possessions in a fire. QUILTS OF ALL SIZES NEEDED NEW KITS are being made and are available at each general meeting for baby/toddler, youth, and twin. Patterns, fabric, batt, back, and/or kits are also available at CS Thursday. Nancy Holtz and I hope to see you at one or more of the remaining 2017 dates: October 19 November 16 December NO CS CS is now located at the Nevada County Historical Society building, directly across from the CDF/Cal-Fire Department and next to Sierra Presbyterian Church. Take the Gold Flat exit, and go towards Ridge Road. At the stop sign, turn left. At the next stop sign, turn left again into the parking lot. CS is at the back of the building. We meet 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m., third Thursday of each month. We welcome members and non-members to help sort fabrics, make kits, prepare quilt sandwiches, attach labels, sew up backs, and package the quilts for the agencies. Want to help but cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? Contact Nancy or me for other arrangements. Thank you, Marjorie and Nancy Contact Info in the Guild Directory Interested in joining a Mini Group? Mary Ross Share and Care Chairperson hmrossjr@yahoo.com A Mini Group is a small group of Guild members who meet on certain days, times, and locations to enjoy some quilting time together. They choose a name for their group, and decide together how they will spend their time. Hand sewing, machine sewing, a field trip, or show and tell while enjoying each other s company is what a mini group is all about. If you would like to join a mini group, please let me know and I ll be happy to find you a current group, or, we ll start a new one together. Kris Cook Mini Groups Chairperson

Nolting Longarm Quilting Machine 16' "Hobby Quilter" built in 2005 We're moving and I need to find a new home for this great quilting machine. I am only the second owner, and both owners are trustworthy, current PTQG members. This Nolting quilting machine includes all the original paperwork with operation manual and accessories, extra bobbins, a "Sidewinder" bobbin winder and a 12 foot industrial frame with lots of shelving. This is a great standard speed control machine for any level of quilter who wants to improve their machine quilting skills. And you won't have to pay other people to quilt your masterpieces any longer! Nolting will buy it back from me for $1800, but I'd rather sell it to a PTQG sister! I can also help with local deliver and setup. Please contact Dana Swain

9 The Pine Needle Press Patchwork Star for October 2017 Page 9 Margie Lucas Canning peaches, putting up an array of countless mason jars for the long winter s bounty sure enough isn t that what proper grandmas do? For the staunch do-ityourselfers like Margie, it s gotta be canning, quilting or perhaps gardening. I don t do well in cities. Full of bounce and unstoppable joie de vivre, Margie and Robert maintain a 3-story woodsy retreat with 6/10 of an acre. Living largely on their Kingsized deck, Robert also spends hours in the cave (the basement) building beautiful cabinetry. Their master bedroom has morphed into her sewing studio; happily, and dually accommodated. The upper floor provides an Air B & B opportunity. Guest are rewarded with a lovely cachet of queen0sized quilts from which to choose. Since Margie has been quilting for 20 years, stories of classes and inspiration from notable luminaries underscore her treasures. Living in a motorhome, primarily through the Midwest and Arizona, she has adapted cheerfully to lap projects, individual Baltimore blocks and paper-pieced gems abound. A closer look at Kathy Sandbach s Mariner s Compass, Ellie Sienkiewcz s expert hand applique or Anelie Belden s Thoroughly Modern Dresden have made their mark. Claiming to be an outdoor girl, Margie has adapted well to sewing at a picnic bench. Moreover, her once-in-a-lifetime hand-quilted gem was creased and marked with an old table knife! Judy Mathiesen s paper-piecing method has been Margie s greatest inspiration. Margie s mini group is called New Best Friends, meeting twice a month from Sharing is enjoyed for sure, but Margie quips, I don t need another good idea! (Do any of us?) She was program chair for her Amador guild, so of course, she had to be present for all their classes. She has sewn lots of Linus quilts and made her children s clothing. A hefty collection of quilting books stimulates her imagination. See-through sandwich meat containers full of notions, are velcroed to the slanted ceiling of a sewing closet. Lettuce bins house colorful scrappy selections. Nearly 200 connecting threads spools, like soldiers in a row, provide a candy-colored display. Everything has a place and everything in its place. Remember Robert is sleeping in the designated sewing studio. It works for them. A swallow, a sparrow, perhaps a mallard grace a homey wall-hanging. A fondness for scrappiness and using up her stash proves successful. A made-on-the-road rosy red Baltimore is her most ambitious prize pretty as a peach. Despite much travel and having lived in 13 different houses, nary a hiccup has kept Margie from accomplishing her quilting passion. A do-it yourself gal, still going strong!
