1 The Pine Needle Press Volume 30 Issue 4! Pine Tree Quilt Guild April A newsletter of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County, having taken root in the fabric of the Grass Valley community since Published monthly except August Banner Mine Way, Nevada City April President s Message Wow! That is the only word that I can use to describe the tremendous turn out and response to our March Mixer. We have had many positive comments from both new and veteran members on how the evening was both fun and informative. I want to give a special thank you to Ruth Bertaccini and her committee of hostesses and group leaders for all of their hard work. Thanks also to Sue Miller for her photography skills throughout the evening. The survey response was excellent, with 155 surveys returned. We spent some time going over your responses and comments, and will be using this information for future planning. (See separate report) Of course, our main focus for the next month is our annual Quilt Show. Committee members are hard at work, making sure that all will be ready. Now is the time to send in your entry forms. We are hoping for at least 300 entries this year, so please send yours in ASAP. I hope that each of you will also consider signing up for at least one committee as a helper. It is a great way to meet people and make new friends while helping out your Guild. Make sure to attend our April meeting, where we will be announcing the Hall of Honor honorees. We will also be drawing the names of three lucky Pine Tree Trivia participants for some lovely prizes. See you on April 2! 5 The Pine Needle Press!!!!!! Page 5 quilt show news and requests for volunteers!!! Quilt Show News We are quickly approaching our big 'Spring Time In The Pines' moment. The April meeting is the last time the committee chairs will have access to the largest collection of guild members. There will be signs set up around the room so you can easily find the committees you want to work with. Be sure to get the bright green voucher that you will present at the gate in order to receive your wrist band at the beginning of your shift. If you are working for the Quilt Show in any other capacity, you still need a voucher to be entered in the drawings to win a free Speakers Workshop of your choice. The drawings will be at the June meeting. The vouchers are also very important in helping us keep track of Quilt Show attendance. I have had a chance to get a glimpse of a few of 'The Fabric Of Space' challenge quilts and I am completely charmed. I love the theme and I hope you do too. It will be so fascinating to see all the different interpretations of this concept. Quilt Show Entries are due April 2 and donated Raffle Baskets are due April 10. The Basket committee will award a prize to the Basket that sells the most tickets. Don't forget to gather up those delightful impulsive purchases from past shopping sprees and send them off to the Country Store, they will make somebody else just as happy as your where when you first bought them. ARE YOU SEWING FOR SILENT AUCTION??? I sure hope so! Sorry to have missed the last meeting. Sounds like the mixer was fun. But, seriously ladies, we are getting down to the wire for stuff for silent auction. We don't have nearly enough donations at this point, and I'm getting a bit distressed. I am hoping that, as in previous years, you all rally to the occasion and we have tons of fabulous stuff to sell on Saturday and Sunday. Remember, it doesn't have to be big and it doesn't even have to be a quilt. I will be anxiously awaiting to hear these words at April's show and tell: "I made this for silent auction". Woo Hoo!! Cathy and Melissa, begging for your help! With great respect for all your time and creativity,!! Carol Riddles, Quilt Show Chair Dining Room Volunteers Dining room sign ups. If you are unable to make it to the general meeting on April 2 and you want to work in the dining room please contact me by phone or . It is always a fun place to work and meet your friends. Kathleen Stanley QUILT SHOW RAFFLE BASKETS The Basket Raffle Committee is still collecting fabric, books, patterns, quilting tools and notions to make our baskets fabulous. We especially need large baskets and YOU are our greatest resource! Look for the Basket Raffle donation sign at the Guild meeting in April. From our wonderful mini-groups (as well as some generous individuals!) we have promises of some imaginative baskets in the works. We ask that completely assembled baskets, with a list of their contents, be turned in by April 10th to Sharon Ellisor, Rattlesnake Ridge Dr.. Please call Sharon at before you deliver your basket. Don't worry about cellophane wrapping - the Committee will take care of it. Help wanted for Country Store. We still have a few open spots on both Saturday and Sunday in the country store. It's an easy job, lots of opportunity to sit down and we have a lot of fun. If you are interested in either working or being a vendor, please contact Val at or Lettie at Thanks! For other members, please consider collecting fresh and new looking items you aren't using from your sewing room or picking up some extra fat quarters when you are fabric shopping. We hope you will join in the fun of making this raffle event super-successful! Questions: Jay Pohl Diane Klose

7 The Pine Needle Press!!!!!! _ Page 7 Survey Report March 2013 With a total of 155 surveys returned, we now have a better picture of the overall skill levels, quilting styles, and interest areas of our membership. Through your comments and suggestions, we have a better direction for future planning of speakers, workshops, and events, as well as a few areas in need of revision. Above all, this survey confirms that we have a vital, interested quilting community with a desire to be inspired and motivated. The complete results will be available on our website, but here is a brief summary: The majority of our members consider themselves to be at the Intermediate level and either Traditional quilters or those using a combination of styles. The primary interest area is piecing, with machine quilting a close second and applique third. The Guest Speaker is the most valued part of the meeting for 60% of the membership, with Show and Tell in second place. Over two-thirds of the members attend Guild meetings regularly and even more participate in the Quilt Show. Speaker Workshops have a lower attendance average, with only about 25% of you usually participating. Work and family commitments often prevent members from being involved in many activities. There were a wide variety of suggestions to improve our general meetings, but the most commonly voiced ideas were to limit announcements and keep overall meeting length to no longer than two hours. The night gets longer and the chairs get harder after 8:30! There were also some requests to limit speakers to one hour and with fewer slide shows. A few people wanted more social events which utilize the talents of our own members. All in all, there were many constructive ideas put forth. Guild members seem to be interested in all types of workshops, from piecing to embellishing, with hand or machine applique receiving the most requests. The high interest level has not been evident in the workshop attendance lately, so this is an area which needs to be addressed. Our Library does not seem to be an area of strong interest for most members, many of whom have substantial personal book collections. We will be looking into whether to continue this service or, perhaps, sell what is left of our books. Again, I would like to personally thank you for taking the time to complete and return this survey. Change doesn t happen overnight, but we can incorporate some of your ideas immediately, specifically regarding limiting announcements. We have also taken a slightly different approach to Patchwork Star and will direct our efforts to having an enjoyable and worthwhile meeting that doesn t go on past 8:30. (Or at least we ll try!!!) Joan Mosley President

11 The Pine Needle Press!!!!!! Page 11 Patchwork Star for April, 2013 Betty Maddox Speaking volumes of antiquity are John Deere curiosities, artifacts and toys, proclaiming untold worth. Yes, after 49 years of serious and inexhaustible gathering in their bucolic Newtown residence, Betty's and Chuck's farm-style hideaway showcases a circus-mixed profusion of carefully curated yellows and greens. Those are the official John Deere colors Betty's favorites. Unapologetic and unabashed, their winsome smiles entreat you to snippets of history. Mixed amongst toy tractors are antique irons, toy sewing machines and 2,500 thimbles filling the crannies. I've always wanted to be invited upstairs to see Betty's sewing room. A veritable talking tome of quilting history, Betty and I navigated through two rooms-- watch your step, duck your head --of UFO's, tops her grandmother and great-grandmother made, the HQ Sixteen long-arm (that I got to play with), TV, books and magazines, zillions of tubs. There's the 1 strip tub, the 1-1/2 strip tub, the 1-3/4 strip tub etc. all the way to 5!! Memorabilia from our guild's genesis, news clippings, photos, grandchildren's projects, color-coded stashes abound. The summer of 1984 marked the beginning of Pine Tree Quilt Guild. Betty was the first president. With eagerness, she reveled in describing the first meeting of interested newcomers that spilled out onto the sidewalk of Heidi's Fabrics! And, remember the combination Tractor and Quilt Shows at our Fairgrounds? Betty and Chuck realized that quilting bees and tractor restorations have been irrevocably linked in a bygone era. An unrepentant traditionalist, quilts are meant to keep you warm at night. Wasting nary a scrap, Betty utilizes all colors, all sizes. Waxing realistically, Betty says: I don't have enough time left to be piecing my quilts by hand or hand quilting them anymore. In the kitchen rests her Janome 6500 Memory Craft, always available for a little 9-patch assembly. Betty is the queen of scrappy, producing award-winning pieced bed quilts, some with beautiful floral applique. Her hand-quilting skills from yesteryear are unparalleled. You will see! With a radiant smile and sparkling eyes, Betty basks in quilting stardom, a font of knowledge and wisdom. Her energy is catching. With all her forebears' quilting influences, a solid singleness of purpose is passed down most favorably. Three daughters and seven granddaughters have eagerly embraced quilting. Family is very important to the Maddox's. All new family members and babies are guaranteed a masterpiece from her. Betty says: Quilters are people, too. Quilters should never stop learning. If one class or technique does not suit you, move on to another. Betty's treasured legacy continues as admiration and respect for her talents and timeless contributions are clearly evident.
