1 The Pine Needle Press Volume 32 Issue 4 Pine Tree Quilt Guild April A newsletter of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County, having taken root in the fabric of the Grass Valley community since Published monthly except August Banner Mine Way, Nevada City April Program Kevin Kosbab Applique Isn t A Four Letter Word Taking the Fear out of Appliquéing On his site, feeddog.net, Kevin tells us that he is a professional quilter and sewing pattern designer, craft and design writer and editor. Wow! Busy man! He started sewing in 2006 when his Mom bought him a sewing machine to inspire him to make real curtains for his apartment and to quit relying on fusible hem tape and her sewing skills translate her slave labor. He never made the curtains, but quickly started sewing quilts, first from patterns and then his own designs. His lifelong interest in graphic design meshed beautifully with his newfound interest in creating his own designs for quilts and other sewing projects. With an English literature degree from Oxford which took him into book publishing, he began to write for Quilters Home magazine on an assortment of topics. In 2007 when his partner got a job in California, he moved to northern California and started freelancing full time. His patterns have appeared in American Patchwork and Quilting, Quilts and More, Quilter s World and Stitch. He contributes to Stitch on a regular basis. This person keeps a record of Guild events in a scrapbook as well as taking photographs at meetings and other events. This can be a fun way to be involved in helping the Guild keep track of its history and activities. Former Historians would be happy to show you what to do. 2 The Pine Needle Press Page 2 President's Message, April 2015 Greetings Guild Members-- One of the amazing aspects of our organization is the great number and variety of opportunities to volunteer both within the Guild and for the Guild within our community. These opportunities come with some very good news. I recently came across a research report on the health benefits of volunteering* and was delighted to discover good things we can do for our own well being just by helping the Guild! Here are a few highlights from the report. --Individuals who volunteer live longer, function better, and have less depression as they age than those who don't volunteer. --While all volunteers experience some benefit, older volunteers (age 60 and older) get even more mental and physical benefit than younger volunteers. --People who volunteer report greater life satisfaction than those who don't volunteer. The bottom line of this research report was that volunteering improves both length and quality of life. When you combine that with the mental health benefits of quilting, you can't do much better than being an active member of the Guild. Our upcoming Quilt Show provides an ideal opportunity to boost the quality of your life! Workers are still needed for every shift. Kathy Biggi Needed: Silent Auction Items with a "Twist." 6 The Pine Needle Press Page 6 The Lunchroom has some fun and unique changes this year. The dining area will be set up in the south wing of the Northern Mines building. Phyllis Brodie and her crew will set-up the room and decorate it as an out-door family BBQ. We will once again be graced with the MAC art quilts and can make selections from the very tempting, hard to resist, homemade desserts. Christopher's Deli, awarded "Best Deli" 10 times by the Union, will cater our lunches this year. They are going to serve Sandwiches, Pasties, Cob Salad and three kinds of side salads along with Vegetarian and Gluten-Free options and all with a portion of fresh fruit. The food will be served up in Christopher's lovely Box Lunch style. Now for the business end of the Lunchroom. We need at least 10 more people per day ( Sat.& Sun) to donate desserts and we need lots of help. The number of volunteers and shifts each day are: 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. set-up and dessert prep.(2) 10:30 to 1:00 p.m. Lunchroom attendants (5) 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. Lunchroom attendants (5) To date there are 5 volunteers signed up and two of them are husbands who have been volunteered by their wives. It would be fabulous to have a co-chair. Since this is a whole new arrangement, a cohort would be so appreciated. Also, if those of you who have had experience programing and working the cash registers would be willing to work a shift, I would be very grateful. Please call, or come sign up at the April meeting. Carol Riddles QUILT SHOW FLYERS AND BOOKMARKS The Publicity Committee has been working very hard to publicize our Show but we need YOUR help! Flyers and bookmarks are available by contacting us and also at the April Guild meeting. Please pick some up and send them to family, friends, and neighbors. Take a stack of bookmarks to your hair dresser, workout gym, and dog groomer! If you see a community bulletin board without one of our flyers posted, ask for permission and put one up! Even though we have already mailed bookmarks and flyers to Northern California shops and guilds, if you will be visiting any, please take some additional for their information tables. Thank you!! Frances O Brien, Anne Wilson and Mary Serpa,

11 The Pine Needle Press Page 11 Patchwork Star April 2015 Julie Berry If there's an unscratched itch in the realm of traditional piecing, ambitious Julie will find it! With humility and certainty, Julie proclaimed, I've been quilting for 45 years and I give most of my quilts away. Mom, who is now 90, still quilts. And, Julie's sister quilts. When a relative turns 30 or gets married, this trio guarantees a quilt for them. In the 70's when supplies and techniques were few, I used pieces of paper towels for templates. We were wearing and using polyester double knits and I didn't know wool pieces would shrink. All quilts were tied with white yarn. With an infectious smile, Julie showed a dizzying array of finished quilts. And, still we had not enough time to peek into that whole quilt-stuffed closet in the living room. Those were reserved for guests to sleep under. With nary a kerfuffle, there are many notches in Julie's belt. Crescendoes of color stashes, floor to ceiling, are neatly arranged in her studio closet. I know where all my Hawaiians are, all my black and whites, all my neutrals. Julie loves classes. She has learned from Barbara Shapel, Laura Lee Fritz, Melinda Buhla and Velda Newman to name a few. My favorite colors are blue and yellow. However, kaleidoscopes of colorful ruby-stone reds, life's hottest pinks and Kaffeinspired empurpled borders validated Julie's sheer love of process. Effortlessly, she quilts all smaller projects on her Janome Memory Craft 6600, using rolls of Quilting Made Easy pattern paper. Somewhat sheepishly, Julie remarked, I usually have about 15 projects going at once. A sudden knock at the door welcomed a serendipitous guest. Karla Rogers was delivering three freshly quilted projects! I thought, Whoa, Julie is one prolific gal! It seems a friend of Julie's is a friend for life. Julie still convenes with her ten quilting buddies in Truckee. When husband Scott was in police work there for eight years, she made lasting friendships. Likewise, when they lived in Yuba City, the Berry's made sturdy alliances with their church friends, still returning frequently to attend functions. Julie even substitutes in classes for those precious and beloved pre-school children at their Presbyterian Church. Oh, there's so much more. She is a Master Gardener. From the tiny white tags, peeking through winter's muck and mire, sturdily anchored to scores of semi-withered plant stocks, I knew a cataloguing stystem was earnestly still in place. A stately antique upright piano of polished walnut let me to know someone was a musician. I should have asked her to play a tune for me. But, time was slipping away for our interview was coming to a close. Forgetting to snap Julie's photo, we both seemed more excited about her trip to Hawaii---tomorrow! She had just sewn three smart and clever, lightweight and reversible hats to take! Cute as a bug's ear they were. Wow! Gotta have that recipe!
