Future Programs July Annual Picnic August No Meeting September Jane Haworth Jane Haworth is an award winning professional quilter specializing in custom memory quilts made from T-Shirts, neckties, handkerchiefs and other types of clothing collected over the years. In addition to quilts she makes raw edge collage applique wall hangings using her own hand dyed fabrics. She also enjoys the challenge of repurposing materials into useful products like bags. Jane also instructs quilting classes for both kids and adults, encouraging them to go out of their comfort zone and "just create!" October Sandra Mollon I fell in love with quilts the first time I saw an issue of a Lady s Circle Patchwork Quilts magazine in the fall of By 1987 we moved to Maryland, and I took my dear husband with me to G Street Fabrics and selected a pattern and began sewing. I had a wonderful teacher early on Lois Smith, and began my second quilt, a sampler. I was totally hooked on quilting, and my love of the art has grown over the years. I learned hand applique in 1990, and it changed my life. I began teaching locally in 1997, and continue to teach in both quilt stores and quilting guilds. I also organize an annual applique retreat every year at Zephyr Point Presbyterian Conference Center. These have been very fun, and at a wonderful location on Lake Tahoe. November Pixeladies The Pixeladies are artists who tell stories in cloth. When they're not creating art, they teach courses on Adobe Photoshop Elements for fiber artists and sewing enthusiasts.

2 The Pine Needle Press Page 2 President s Message June 2016 The Quilt Show was amazing. It was only possible because of the work of the many volunteers and the leadership of the co-chairs, Marjorie McConnell and Jeanne Pincha-Tulley. The Featured Quilter Jeanie Ferguson displayed many of her wonderful creations. I truly appreciate all of the personal time everyone (including husbands and other family members) gave to make this one of our best shows. And the weather was terrific! As another way to say Thank You to all of the volunteers, plans for Jamboree are under way. The teachers have been selected, contracts have been signed and returned and there were class sign ups at the May guild meeting. If you missed the sign ups, there will be another chance at the June meeting. Jamboree is schedule for Saturday, October 22, Our June speaker is Judy Coates-Perez. She does beautiful work and will have a workshop the day after the guild meeting. The workshop will be an introduction to mixed-media techniques on fabric. 3 The Pine Needle Press Page 3 Draft Horse Classic Extra Quilt Last year at the Draft Horse Classic we sold tickets for our Opportunity Quilt and for another horse themed quilt which was raffled at the end of the weekend. The guild sold $1,100 in raffle tickets on the horse themed quilt. The Opportunity Quilt raised an equal amount during the same time. This is a nice fund raiser for the guild that we would like to continue again this year. We are looking for some horse or western fabric, even a panel, for the quilt and for someone who would be willing to create something with the fabric that we could raffle. Please let me know, via , if you are interested. Thanks, sewhandy@sbcglobal.net Opportunity Quilt Marketing 2018 Opportunity Quilt We are looking for a person or mini group to think of an idea and take the lead on creating our next Opportunity Quilt. 4 Community Services What does Community Service mean to you? To the Guild? Is it important or just one more activity that requires volunteer support? Kathy Biggi and I arrived at the May Community Service day and were the only two people from 9:00 2:00, three people came by with quilts to drop off. CS Needs YOU, it only happens with member support. We need a: 1. Co-Chair to monitor CS days when I cannot be there (no board meetings required). 2. News Watcher to read The Union and listen to KNCO to know when local residents have a difficult moment and need help 3. Outreach Coordinator to contact local non-profits and determine their needs 4. Individuals to help sew on labels; measure, mark, and record quilts; quilt sandwiches; sew on binding... all the things required to finish the quilts and prepare for storage. CS also offers MAKE YOUR OWN QUILT KIT pick a pattern or use your own, select your fabrics, and make a quilt for CS. We have lots of fabrics, including a nice flannel selection. KATHY S KITS We have lots of kits quilts and pillowcases ready for you to sew. And we have BLOCK PARTY pieces made from a variety of fun fabric orphans waiting to be adopted into 10-inch or larger blocks. Simply sew precut pieces together into a block and turn them in to CS. As the finished blocks accumulate they will be assembled into tops for baby, lap, or twin size quilts. How easy is this? Please join us at Eskaton Senior Living on the THIRD TUESDAY of each month, 9:00 3:00 unless otherwise noted. Eskaton is off of Ridge Road. Take the Gold Flat exit, one mile up the road. There is a sign on the right, then a left turn lane CS DATES third TUESDAY at ESKATON, 9:00 3:00 unless otherwise noted. June 21 July 19 August 16 September 20 October 18 November 15 December NO CS Cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? I will deliver a kit, quilt sandwich, or quilts to bind to you to work on at home call or me. If you know of someone who needs a quilt, please contact me with the details. Thanks, Marjorie McConnell Joyous JPT Guess who won a basket at the Quilt Show? HOME WORKSHOP * DROP IN AND SEW We are meeting June 23, 9:30-3:00 at LDS Church. Come for the camaraderie, to learn something new, hone a skill, or enjoy open sew which can be any project of your own or a Community Service quilt. Bring a bag lunch to enjoy on the covered terrace in the back. Anne Wilson awilson@svn.net

5 The Pine Needle Press Page 5 Donna Fry Patchwork Star for June, 2016 I arrived at the end of the rainbow. Somewhere along Squirrel Creek Road, steeped in blissful sunshine, with birdsong sweetening the air, Donna resides in utmost serenity. For 30 years, she and husband, Brian, have enjoyed their heavily treed sanctuary and a home respected for modesty and a sense of joyfulness. An impressive 1935 black and white Wedgewood gas stove, stands replete with two salt and pepper cubbies, pot and pan storage and trash burner. Donna quipped, there's just a few visible love dings, approving its worthiness. In the breakfast nook, an 1870 Singer treadle sewing machine with mother of pearl inlay, resides in an intricate wood cabinet. Her cozy living room boasts a vintage cabinet filled with fragile tomes: an 1845 New Testament next to the Life and Epistles of St. Paul. For Donna, it's the journey. Very serious Persian rug-making, requiring 864 threads per square inch, is her (other) passion. From the Caucasus Mountains of Russia, this traditional pattern combines coral, bottle green and paprika in continuous wool yarn, fed through a special needle with handle. Exhibiting this expertise, Donna's winsome smile convinced me of her complete sense of tranquility, saying It keeps life in perspective. It's the small step approach. She's already invested 12 years into this large rug. A smaller completed cobalt rug with fringed ends took five years! This, my friends, is the gold standard of rug making. For one hour's concentration, Donna can cover from ½ inch to perhaps a whole inch! When purchasing a true Oriental rug, always check for a label that says: no child labor. Donna also cautions: Since wool has a memory, always cut your loops immediately after finishing your one inch square. They could bend in just the wrong place. With the precision and tediousness of a Swiss watch, progress is made. Donna's most nostalgic keepsake quilt was made from Grandma's hand sewn squares when she was 12 years old in the 20's. Both Donna and Brian had a hand in this quilt's construction. Indulging in the sublime sensuality of hand-quilting Donna spends evenings in her living room, working on queen-sized hooped and subtle bird motifs. Like many of us, legendary Sandy Hubka had introduced Donna to this new-found skill in The endearing simplicity of her chosen color palette: pastels mixed with subdued reds, antique creams paired with rich violets and periwinkles are common. With four daughters, many gifted quilts are now being loved by another. Her orderly stash, all pre-washed and ironed, is minimal, peeking through a glass cabinet. A kaleidoscopic art piece reminds her of noble aspirations and kindnesses. Buying light-weight web by the bolt insures Donna's success for raw edge applique, finished with a precise machine blanket stitch. Her Janome 6500 is situated at a picture window ready for action. Working as a full-time nurse caring for babies and new mothers, Donna s title as Senior Public Health Nurse, qualifies her for down time, relaxation and an occasional quilting retreat to Tahoe or Idaho. With genuine sincerity, Donna's soft-spoken demeanor and comfortable home represent a bastion of little luxuries. She has found peacefulness and joy at the end of the rainbow. Remember, it's the journey that matters. Jeanie Ferguson Congratulations to Jeanie on being the Featured Quilter and winning Best of Show! Patchwork Star Reporter

A true collaborative effort, both John and Karla work on the design and execution of each quilt. John and Karla regularly attend national quilt shows and update their skills through the various classes offered during those shows. They are delighted that many of their clients' quilts have won Blue Ribbons in judged shows including Best of Show awards in 2013 and 2016, with the judges favorably commenting on the quilting. John developed his respect and appreciation for quilts as a result of both his mother and wife's shared passion for collecting and constructing quilts.
