3 The Pine Needle Press!!!!!! Page 3 Patchwork Star for June Trish Morris -Plise Albeit a newcomer in our midst, Trish brings a wellspring of impeccable artistry to our fold. With twelve perfectly even stitches to the inch, Trish's exacting cross-hatching, all hand executed quilting, should bring an armload of accolades from quilt legends such as Betty Maddox. Trish has been quilting for 30 years! I quilt three hours a night because it is rewarding and relaxing, sometimes on a bed-sized frame extending into the family room. Self-reliance and simple sophistication prevent her from engaging in machine quilting. Only Sandra Bruce has broken that barrier due to Trish's newly engineered tropical fish series (4 so far). With hundreds of 2 squares, seams and thicknesses abound just not conducive to hand quilting success. Trish's everyday machine is a plucky 1940's era Singer, adorned with golden filigree on shiny black metal. It was my mom's she claimed, still delivering all manner of necessity and requirement. Trish just won a blue ribbon at the show for a large beige on white traditional Hawaiian masterpiece--something not often seen in these parts. Agreeing that machine quilting was poo-pooed fifteen young sewers with school-aged children, joined the Carquinez Straits Stitchers in the 80's. Trish was the instigator of this group, all living in Benecia, all enjoying the fruits of their hand labor. Whisking through multiple residences: British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii, Trish allowed her quilting spirit to lead her on a singular track. Unafraid, self-reliant and full of moxie, Trish made waves as a scuba diver and boat captain while living on the big Island of Hawaii for six years. Quietly proclaiming, It is a sport that is not without risk. Viewing pretty fish and unusual marine life 130 feet underwater for 1-1/2 hours at a time is a big thrill for her! She and husband, Norm, are passionate divers. Exotic locales like Fiji, Curacao, Saba and Aruba roll off her tongue with an energetic confidence, keeping of course, The Great Barrier Reef on their enviable bucket list. When in Rome, excuse me I mean Hawaii, you must quilt like an Hawaiian. The ever popular echoing or contouring stitches are properly referred to as waves representing the island with waves all around it. And, naturally becoming further apart as they spread out. Backgrounds are unseamed and white. Motifs have no seams. Plain colors from wide back selections make up the motifs, both inside and around the edge. Trish will soon begin yet another Hawaiian king sized bed quilt. A giant piece of butcher paper features yet another pineapple, antherium or bread fruit selection. Saying, I enjoy the sameness of quilting, Her applique skills are stellar as well. Trish, youthful and eager, was our show's chief basket committee organizer, realizing a $400 increase from last year's proceeds. Her Sew Happy pals meet once a month at Bonnie's community room. Where else are you going to lay out a king sized Hawaiian motif for basting?! Mountain Art Quilters is pleased to announce her recent winner for the Same Color, Same Thread category a fiery orange floral that'll knock your sox off. What a class act Trish is! A scuba diving, swimming, boating, Hawaiian quilting wonder woman! Reserved and sophisticated, there's this unexpected and exciting co-mingling of outdoorsiness and quiet indoor artistry. She'll have no hesitation for cutting out this gigantic new center motif. Just quietly jump in and slay the dragon.....!!!!!!! Jeanie Ferguson!!!!!!! Patchwork Star reporter

9 The Pine Needle Press!!!!!! Page Opportunity Quilt Final Wrap-up Our Opportunity Quilt has a good home. This year's winner was Cindy Paloma of Brownsville. She is not a quilter, but she was raised with women who quilted, so she has a great appreciation of the craft. The quilt was revealed at the 2013 quilt show last May. Tickets were first sold at the County Fair in August, then again at the Draft Horse Classic in September. In October the quilt was taken to Paint the Town Pink and in November & December tickets were sold at Cornish Christmas. Throughout the year the Opportunity Quilt visited 15 different guilds and their members were very supportive. We made $5, The 2014 quilt was put together by the Sew Happy mini-group and was quilted by Barbara Ceresa. I stepped forward and became the marketing chairperson and so many of you volunteered to help sell the tickets. Some even took the quilt to other meetings. Now we begin again. Next years quilt was revealed at the Quilt Show and it is stunning. But tickets do not sell themselves. This is OUR guild, This is OUR opportunity quilt. We all need to help out. First thing we need is a person to be the marketing chair. Let me tell you it is a bit of work, but a lot of fun, and you meet a lot of great people. This is our big money maker and proceeds go to Community Service, Scholarship Program, out-reach. So please help out. And for all of you who helped sell tickets and all of you who bought tickets... THANK YOU! Lorna Straka, former marketing chairperson Cindy Paloma, winner of our 2014 Opportunity Quilt "Quilt Show Committee wrap up meeting on June 10, 5:00 PM at Commodore Park in Lake Wildwood. Supply is limited, once these are gone they are gone. June Program Merrilyn Scott Merrilyn Sco started quilting in 1970 when she took scraps from clothes she had made for her daughter and herself and magically turned those scraps into her first quilt! After making many quilts, she actually began to study how to quilt. She has no idea how many quilts she s made because it never occurred to her to count them! Following a ten year break, Merrilyn returned to quilting in 1994 and discovered rotary tools. She thinks her urge to cut fabric was influenced by the fact that she was scissor deprived as a child. Since she now cuts through fabric at every opportunity, she has an extensive UFO list which she is slowly working through. (Editor s Note: Is that different from any other quilter?) Eager to share her enthusiasm about quilting, she began teaching in 1996 and which eventually lead to quilt design and pa ern development. Presentation June 3rd, 2014 Essential Embellishments Workshop June 4th, 2014 Sunshine and Flowers Her workshop is a great way to spend a day as you and your quilting buddies learn a technique that plays with basic origami flowers and stars, plus embroidery, embellishments and applique.
