What are some of the pitfalls that can be avoided so that your longarm quilter can make your quilt beautiful and judge-worthy? How exactly does the magic of long arm quilting happen? For answers to these questions and other questions you may have, come to the February meeting to hear a presentation by Sandra Bruce. She will use visuals in a slide show to illustrate the ins-and-outs of what longarmers do, and how a quilt is finished. 2 The Pine Needle Press Page 2 February 2019 President s Message "All you need is love..." And some fabric, and a pattern, and a guild with lots of good friends. On February 5th our speaker will be the ever so talented Sandra Bruce. Sandra will teach us how to prepare a quilt for the long-arm quilter. This information will come in handy three months before our quilt show. Joan Mosley is going to give us a sneak-peek at what's happening at our March Mixer. Now I can understand that you just can't wait for the meeting to begin, but you must wait. Please. The Cook Family (the lovely ladies who set-up & take down our tables & chairs) has asked that you don't show up to the meeting place before 5:50pm. They need time to set-up & you're in the way. If you need to get there early you can wait until 10 minutes before 6pm. That's 40 minutes before the meeting begins. Thank you all, Lorna Straka PTQG President Coming Events.. We have our own Sandra Bruce scheduled to give a talk in February! She will tell us all about the long-arm process with her talk, titled Taking the Mystery Out of Longarming. Should be really helpful and interesting for all! March - of course - is the month of the guild Mixer so no program is scheduled. Looking ahead to April, we will have Mel Beach back. She will give a lecture on dyeing fabric and clothing titled Dare to Dye. The following day Mel will teach a fun class, Free Styling and Spiraling. In this class improv piecing creating spiral shapes are used to make a great modern quilt. Sign-ups and samples for this class will be available at the February meeting. Lots to look forward to!! 3 The Pine Needle Press Page 3 Guild Challenge While March is almost here, you can add an extra challenge to our Guild Challenge by picking a letter, from the black bag at the February meeting. That would give you almost a month to make a quilt for our Challenge. It does not have to be a very big quilt. The Quilt Show Challenge is a miniature quilt, limited to a perimeter of 100. Making it that size would give you a twofer :) Anyone up for it??? Quilts will be hung and voted on at our March Guild meeting. Ribbons will be awarded in the following categories: Best Use of Theme, Best Traditional, Best Appliqué, Best Art, Most Humorous, and Favorite quilt. You never know, I might throw in a surprise category before voting. The rules are simple. Outside border may not exceed 144 ;There must be a minimum of three (3) items on the front of the quilt that start with your letter; Please keep it a secret. If you have any questions or have forgotten what letter you already have, please call or me. My information is in the Guild Directory. Lois Hodges Guild Challenge Chair Hint: Those who read their newsletters will know ahead of time that the surprise award category is: Best combination of Theme and Miniature Quilt. Also, for those overachievers out there, you are allowed to enter two quilts if you so choose. Have fun! 4 The Pine Needle Press Page 4 COMMUNITY SERVICE Just a reminder about quilt sizes.. Baby - 36" by 36" Lap - 38" by 54" Twin " by Double by 80-88" Queen/King by These sizes are all approximate, not exact. We are currently in need of adult lap for folks in wheelchairs in nursing homes (Crystal Ridge and Golden Empire) and adult twin size for Hospitality House (Quilts go to clients moving to permanent housing only) and Adult Protective Services. We also need quilts to be quilted. In general, our need for baby and juvenile lap quilts is minimal. Come join us for getting to know other members and help our community. We have fabric to sort, kits to make, cutting to do. We meet the third Thursday of each month from 9AM to 3 PM at the back of the Nevada County Historical Society at the wacky corner of Ridge Road and Nevada City Highway, next to Sierra Presbyterian Church. In the winter months, it is cool in the room. The small space heaters we use keep the room from being really cold. Wear a sweatshirt or a jacket/sweater. Thanks again to ALL who helped us out in Next community Service Day is February 21st 9 AM to 3 PM rear of the Nevada County Historical Society next to the Sierra Presbyterian Church. Nancy Holtz Community Service Getting to Know You It has become an annual Guild tradition to hold a special event at our March meeting, to welcome our newest members into our Pine Tree Quilt Guild family. This year will be no exception. On March 5, the PTQG Board will host a semi-elegant tea party, complete with some lovely teas and delicious treats. There will be a few get-acquainted activities, as well, during the very relaxed and low key evening. Hats are encouraged, (but not required) with prizes for the loveliest, best decorated, and wildest creation! This is also the night that we vote and award prizes for our Challenge quilts, so keep working on those masterpieces. Hope to see you all at the March Mixer! Joan Mosley

5 The Pine Needle Press Page 5 HOME WORKSHOP Hello fellow quilters, The Home Workshop has a variety of up coming classes, some already scheduled and others we re craving. Look at the list below and choose one or all. At our next meeting, look at the suggestions and help us schedule the ones you think would be most interesting. Upcoming presentations being considered are: tissue paper dyeing, a large tote, armchair caddy, travel tool organizer, umbrellas, free sew (good any month), a vest, name tags. Why are they still on the consideration list and not yet have a date? We want to do them all and there aren t enough months for all. Help us decide which ones appeal to you. Date Presenter Topic February 28 Ardy Tobin Master the art of finishing your quilt. March 28 Margie Lucas Assemble and baste a quilt sandwich on a small table. April 25 Jill Schlageter Create a tissue holder coordinated to your decor. You can sign up for up-coming classes by letting us know by , phone, or signing up at the meetings. We out supply lists or send by snail mail if necessary. Both of us are in the roster. If weather is a factor, you might want to contact us to see if we are having the class. Last year there were a couple of bad days and we had phone calls, but we did end up having the classes in spite of the weather. Of course, we also like to remind you that we are always looking for classes you would be interested in. We will look for teachers and advertise the class. If you can teach the skill or technique, that would be even better! Please contact us with your ideas! Look for Bonnie and Theresa at the Home Workshop table. Sign up for a class or join us with your own project and enjoy the camaraderie. Thanks. Hope to see you there! Theresa Finn & Bonnie Lattin~Hensel Holiday Challenge Last month s newsletter had a message from Karla Roger s about how rewarding and enjoyable it is to participate in a quilt challenge. In February we will be sharing the quilts made in last year s Holiday Challenge. At that time we ll invite you to join us in the 2019 Holiday Challenge. Frances O Brien

6 The Pine Needle Press Page 6 Treasurer s Message In order to help me keep our accounts current, please send your receipts to me as soon as possible after you get them. You can send them to me as snail mail or . Thanks, Holly Miner Treasurer Pine Tree Quilt Guild Treasurer's Report for December 2018 Checking Beginning Balance 12/1/18 $28, Deposits $3, Checks & Payments -$1, Checking Ending Balance 12/31/18 $30, Savings $30, Quilt Show Balance $5, Total Cash 12/31/18 $64, The Quilt Show is fast approaching! We are receiving monies from vendors, the contract will soon be delivered, the Opportunity Quilt has been to many Guilds, and committees are working hard to make the show a success. All our hard work will be for naught unless you step up to help us. At February s meeting we will again have sign-ups for the Show. Each committee chairperson who needs help will be there to answer questions if you have them. Thanks to those of you who stepped up at the January meeting and volunteered. It s always amazing to see the final numbers of members who have helped out at the Show over the week. Thanks in advance. The Team of Five Kris Cook, Sophia Day, Susie Hardy, Sue Miller and Mary Serpa Quilt Show Challenge I m excited about the Guild Challenge and Show Challenge and the chance to combine two challenges into one quilt! I showed you my tops for two miniature quilts, but I ve got an idea for the one I plan to enter. So it s time for me to get sewing! A little reminder, the Quilt Show Challenge is to make a miniature quilt of your choice. The only requirement is that the perimeter is no more than 100 inches. FYI.This is smaller than for a small quilt in the Show. See Lois Hodges article on page 3 for info on the Quilt Guild Challenge. Sue Miller

7 The Pine Needle Press Page 7 Opportunity Quilt Marketing - There is one scheduled showing for February 19th. The information on the showing is : River City Quilters Guild in Sacramento Meeting starts at 7pm with setup and presale at 6pm. Location is Unitarian Universalist Society of Sacramento 2425 Sierra Blvd, Sacramento I have a previous commitment (on an embroidery cruise) that week and so I am unable to show the quilt. If you are interested, please let me know. Thanks, Diane Klose Boutique Hello to All, As you may know, Barbara Ceresa and I will again be chairing the Pine Tree Boutique for We now have two years' experience with this part of the Quilt Show and are looking forward to another great venture. While sales have been strong for some people, for others they have not and we hope to come up with some fresh ideas that will help everyone. Please let us know ASAP if you are interested in becoming a vendor this year. As soon as we know the names of our participants, we will hold a planning meeting sometime in February. I will have a sign-up sheet at the February Guild meeting, or you can me at sjmosley4@comcast.net., if you have any questions or to give me your contact information. Thank you, Joan Mosley and Barbara Ceresa Quilt Show Baskets Now is the time to think about sponsoring a raffle basket or contributing individual items for the 2019 Guild Quilt Show. As you begin your spring cleaning, please consider donating new and unused fabric, tools or books, etc. which we can add to other baskets. We also accept cash donations for gift cards to add to the baskets. Look for us at the next meeting to drop off your items. Or, please consider sponsoring a basket individually or with a group of friends. Please pick up an updated commitment form at the February meeting and don t forget to turn in the information section. This really helps with the committee planning. We have a great committee this year and are excited to see all the wonderful things you donate. Thanks to all of you for your generous contributions, which help keep the Pine Tree Raffle Baskets such a successful part of the show. Co-chairs - Ginny Lee Nancy Holtz Judging Ione Ishii Mark your calendar! Open judging will be held May 2nd, at 9:00AM, and will run through the afternoon until all quilts have been evaluated. This year the judging arena is again located at the Church of Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ, 615 Hollow Way, Nevada City. Open judging is for anyone who wishes to observe the activities, however, the open judging arena requires observers to refrain from talking and especially commenting on the quilts being judged. The only voices in the arena should be that of the two judges. Whispers are allowed. In addition to that prerequiste is that the process is not for broadcasting outside the arena. In other words, who won awards or how the judging scene came about is only for the ears of those who attend the process. Again, this year we have two professional quilt judges whose goals are to give meaningful, helpful and encouraging comments while gently pointing out areas for improvement, all the while recognizing the time, effort and expertise of each and every quiltmaker. Come join this educational process! Lynda Lasich

8 The Pine Needle Press Page 8 Patchwork Star for February Star Parker The heart of the matter is a matter of the heart. Star has certainly bloomed where she has been planted. Nestled among pine trees on five acres above Nevada City she has availed herself with a glad heart for teaching sewing to countless 4-H children over the years. As a volunteer for Kentucky Flat 4-H, Star teaches beginners how to sew simple skirts, backpacks or hooded fleece-lined scarves. More experienced kids can choose a quilt pattern from Missouri Star Quilt Block magazines (Hamilton, Mo.). For some of us teaching beginning sewing may feel like herding cats an impossible task. Star teaches 13 students once a month for 3 hours a session. In several rooms there are many machines, cutting stations and ironing boards. A 1950's black and gold filigreed Singer is one of her favorite machines. Fabrics are often donated so no child is left without. Star's expertise is in quilting, but she will help a student with whatever they wish. Affirmation with a lightness of spirit brings energy and cheerfulness to the scene. Realizing every intricate project isn't for everyone, she quips, I'd rather have them finish the project. Students are not locked into a box. It's okay to change a written pattern. Innovation comes easily to her. Star is willing to share anything she knows. She is patient. Admitting, I'm a very hands-on person. I love the kids' expressions on their faces when they accomplish something. Needless to say, each 4-Her is encouraged to enter their project(s) into the county fair. Star's infectious enthusiasm and energetic discipline enable her to focus on what most benefits children. As president of the Nevada County 4-H she officiates over two meetings per month where important decisions are being made to promote activities for hundreds of 4-H children. Additionally, she is President for the Ag-Boosters, a group of women providing student scholarships. Planning community events such as a crab feed fundraiser, a Rotary breakfast and a buyers dinner at the Fairgrounds make Star's life full and demanding. She is dedicated and ambitious. Star's qualifications are varied. Since 2012 she has owned and operated a full sized long arm Gammill Optimum Quilting Machine. While I was admiring it, Julie Berry came to pick up a finished double-sided Cuddle quilt for her grandson. Contractors have already been hired to remodel a huge outbuilding for her expanding quilting enterprise. This new spacious classroom will be available this year-- and have its own bathroom. Also, Star offers private sewing lessons at her home. What a wonderful thing to hear! Many young mothers shopping at Ben Franklin have expressed this need. Star has a passion for teaching. And, she is also licensed to fix your machine's mechanical problems! Maintaining a house full of sewing machines (I couldn't count them all) cost-conscious Star needed to learn to keep them running satisfactorily. With a stellar blending of Star's teaching prowess and her indefatigable energy, she accomplishes much. Understandably, pursuing her own personal projects has taken a back seat. Researching and perfecting the next lesson plan for her students remains paramount. Her journey has been personally rewarding and fulfilling for many. To that end so many students (and us) are most grateful. A Star-studded journey continues! Jeanie Ferguson Patchwork Star Reporter Share and Care Do you know someone in the Guild who is under the weather and can use some cheering? Whether it is an illness, surgery, or loss of a loved one, please let Mary Ross know so she can send an appropriate card. Thanks.. Mary Ross Share and Care Chairperson hmrossjr@yahoo.com

In addition, the Guild furthers its educational goals by the granting of scholarships each year to graduating high school students or current college students who are pursuing study in textile arts, design or other art-related fields. This year we are offering one scholarship for $1,500 in memory of Jeanne E. Gill and Carol Phillips. The scholarship will be administered by the chosen college of the recipient upon proof of registration. The application period is now open. The applicant must be a resident of Nevada County. Applicants may apply to their scholarship office at their respective high school or may apply directly to the scholarship chair of the Guild who will forward an application to the applicant. All completed applications must be received no later than April 1 st, If you or someone you know would like to apply for a scholarship, please have them contact their high school counselor or me, Judy Hamilton at judyfieldshamilton@gmail.com.
