1 The Pine Needle Press Volume 33 Issue 3 Pine Tree Quilt Guild March A newsletter of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County, having taken root in the fabric of the Grass Valley community since Published monthly except August. March Program How To Be A Carefree Quilter Joy Lily Presentation: March 7th, :30PM Grass Valley Charter School, S. Auburn, Grass Valley Workshop: March 8th 9:00AM Lazy Leaves Table Runner Seventh Day Adventist Church, Osborne Rd., Grass Valley Ever feel you re getting a little up-tight about your quilting projects? Join us on March 7th for a presentation about carefree creations! I believe that we are all born artists. A lot of people had their natural creativity stifled at an early age.. My teaching style is collaborative and playful. I offer projects and techniques that are goof-proof to assist students in creating work they will love, on the very first try. Excerpted from We are grateful that Joy Lily was able to reschedule after being snowed out in January. Come and enjoy her presentation on carefree quilting. GUILD CHALLENGE CHANGED TO OUR MAY 2 nd MEETING Due to the cancellation of our January Guild meeting, the speaker and her workshop have been moved to March 7 th and 8 th, our regular March meeting dates. The March Mixer and Guild Challenge have been moved to our May 2 nd Meeting. EXTRA TIME to start and finish or just finish you Guild Challenge quilt. May 2 nd will be a very busy day for our Guild. Judged quilts need to be dropped off; Guild Challenge quilts brought to our meeting, hung and voted on; and our March, now May, Mixer will be our May meeting. Anyone who wants their Guild Challenge quilt judged should bring it to the judged quilt drop off. I will be there to take any Challenge quilts that are entered for judging. I will bring them to our meeting and have them hung for our Challenge voting. Sally Monestier will take them after our meeting to put with the other judged quilts for the Quilt Show judging. I encourage you all to enter your quilts for judging. I learn so much from the judging every year, not just mine but from all the judged quilts. There is almost always at least one gem, if not more, to be gathered from what is said. Remember our theme this year is My Quilting Journey or Where I started and where I am now. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at Lois Hodges Guild Challenge Chair

2 The Pine Needle Press Page 2 Hello Quilters, March 2017 President s Message Although it is raining like crazy we will soon see daffodils popping up on the freeway. I look forward to them each year because I know spring is on the way. It also means that the new spring fabrics are available. Yipeeeeeeeee I am happy to announce that Judy Hamilton has taken over Scholarship. Thank you Judy!!! Our March general meeting will be held on March 7 th. It will be held at the Grass Valley Charter School. Joy Lily will be our speaker because she graciously rescheduled after being snowed out in January. Because of the foregoing, our March Mixer has been moved to the May meeting There is still one very important board position to be filled: 1. Quilt Show Co-chair-We need someone to work with Jeanne this year to learn the ropes for quilt show in Two people could share this job. If we don t get a chair for next year we will not be able to have a quilt show. Community Service needs quilts. Our reserves are extremely low. The date for Jamboree is Saturday October 7 th. It will be bigger and better this year because we were able to increase the budget. Your entries for our quilt show are due by no later than April 7 th. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions or comments please contact me. Susie Hardy susiehardy@comcast.net Welcome to 6 new members - We're glad you joined us! 4 The Pine Needle Press Page Quilt Show The Quilt Show Board is moving along with organizing this year s show! Sue Miller is looking at March 1, 2017 for opening the website for you to enter your Quilts. This website is as easy as making online purchases. Once you register yourself and make a password, then you are ready to enter your quilt. Have more than one quilt to enter? No worries. Just go back to where you enter a new entry and add more. Want to edit what you wrote or anything else in a previous entry? No problem. Just go to edit previous entry. All the data is collected into a database which makes it easy for the Quilt Show Board to have a report on all the Featured Quilter Quilts; Challenge Quilts; Quilts to be Judged; Show Only Quilts, list all the entries in the program, write up the receipts to pick up quilts.and soooo much more. Also new this year we are going to have a Boutique! The boutique is for those items you have made that are in new condition such as a quilt, placemat, table runner, etc. that you want to sell. Sign up as a vendor with Joan Mosely and Barbara Ceresa at the Guild general Meeting! Margaret Boothby, Karla Rogers and Sue Hopkins, who are Chairing the featured quilts display Honoring our Quilting Foremothers, are making great strides in organizing this special event. They will be sending folks instructions on what is needed to put the selected quilts in the Featured Quilter Area. Marjorie McConnell, Vendor Chair, has filled up the vendor spaces! We have many returning vendors and some new ones. Please support our vendors this year as they make our show an exciting shopping experience. Already we have four paid vendors, all returning, with a few more on the way. Ardy Tobin is taking appointments to have antique quits appraised by Julie Siber. Quilts from the 1960s and older can be verbally appraised for $25 or be provided a written appraisal (for things like insurance purposes) for $85. Let your friends and neighbors know this is a new service being provided at the Show this year. Many folks have heirlooms and may want to know their monetary value! Keep working on your 2017 quilt entries. Because of your artisan skills, it will be an incredibly beautiful show! Jeanne Pincha-Tulley 2017 Quilt Show Chair The Pine Tree Boutique is Coming to Quilt Show 2017! Wanna Sponsor A Raffle Basket? Clever themes, guy stuff, something a little different? Got any ideas? See Ginny Lee for a sponsorship form. Mini groups or individuals are encouraged to participate. Let us know. It ll be here before you know it! Jeanie Ferguson Chief Basket Case Many thanks to all of you who signed up to make items for our exciting new boutique. There were quite a few of you, but we have room for more! If you are interested in making a little extra cash for your creative endeavors, then contact Joan Mosley at sjmosley4@comcast.net or Barbara Ceresa at bbceresa@yahoo.com and let us know your ideas. We will again be taking sign ups at the March Quilt Meeting, but really need a commitment by March 15th, in order to plan our Boutique set up. Remember that Friends and Family can also enter items (their cut will be 80%). Members will get 85% of their price. We will add the sales tax on at time of purchase, so you do not have to worry about it. Small quilts, no larger than 4' by 6' can be sold. Complete instructions are included in the information packet, which you will receive when you sign up. Stop by our table at the March meeting to find out more. Joan Mosley and Barbara Ceresa Boutique Co-Chairs

5 The Pine Needle Press Page 5 Honoring Our Quilting Foremothers A Display of Historic Quilts and Their Stories by Susan Hopkins Last month we shared how the idea to honor our quilting foremothers grew from friends sharing beloved quilts into the creation of a special display to honor quilt makers dear to us. A favorite quilt made by a former slave, Harriet Powers, was the original inspiration for this exhibit. Who was this woman and what inspired her to create these quilts that museums collect and inspired us to create our display of historic quilts? The quick story, taken from Wikipedia, is Harriet Powers was an African-American slave, folk artist, and quilt maker from rural Georgia. She used traditional appliqué techniques to record local legends, Bible stories, and astronomical events on her quilts. Only two of her quilts are known to have survived: Bible Quilt 1886 and Pictorial Quilt Her quilts are considered among the finest examples of nineteenth-century Southern quilting. Her work is on display at the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. In studying the story of Harriet Powers, the first book I found telling her story was Stitching Stars: The Story Quilts of Harriet Powers by Mary E. Lyons. It is a marvelous story of Harriet s life, photographs of the quilts, and how she made them. Then, being even more curious, I did more research and found the author Kyra E. Hicks who wrote This I Accomplish: Harriet Powers Bible Quilt and Other Pieces. Kyra Hicks has done extensive scholarly research into the life of Harriet Powers, and the history of the quilts: the buyers of the quilts and how the quilts eventually came to be in the museum collections. Both books are fascinating reading and will be shown at our Book Corner during the Quilt Show. Quilt Show Appraiser Julie Silber is a well-known lecturer, author, and curator with more than forty years experience collecting, selling, appraising, and studying quilts. Julie will appraise quilts made before 1960 at our Quilt Show in May. 1) Her hours will be both Saturday and Sunday 10:00AM - 1:00PM and 1:30PM - 3:45PM (last appointment) 2) 15 minutes for an oral appraisal; 20 minutes for a written appraisal (a formal letter will be written after the Show.) Appointments are preferred but she will take walk-ins, but they may have to wait. To make an appraisal appointment, ptqg@comcast.net or call Ardy Tobin at ) Cost is Oral: $25 Written: $85

6 The Pine Needle Press Page 6 Quilt Show Volunteers Hello fellow guild members! We are trying something different this year! Rather than having chairpersons sitting around the outskirts of the March and April meetings looking for volunteers, this year you get me! I will have the signup sheets for all volunteer duties for this year's quilt show. If you want to scribe for the judges, sell tickets at the gate, work the lunchroom, or whatever else floats your boat, you need to see me! I will have all the schedules at the next two meetings. Come and see me and get the ball rolling! Remember too, if you have items for the country store or the boutique, you are required to work a shift there! Let's make this the best quilt show ever! Frances O'Brien ( ) Volunteer Coordinator ** HOW TO ENHANCE YOUR QUILT SHOW EXPERIENCE ** Good: Enter your quilt in the show. 7 The Pine Needle Press Page 7 PINE TREE QUILT GUILD SCHOLARSHIPS The Pine Tree Quilt Guild promotes education in the textile arts through participation in the guild, outreach programs, speakers and workshops. In addition, the Guild furthers its educational goals by the granting of scholarships each year to graduating high school students or current college students who are pursuing study in textile arts, design or other art-related fields. This year we are offering one scholarship for $1,500 in memory of Jeanne E. Gill and Carol Phillips. The scholarship will be administered by the chosen college of the recipient upon proof of registration. After meeting and marrying a young Peace Corps volunteer in Borneo, she and Sam honeymooned in Singapore and Europe. Beach lovers at heart, they relocated on the micronesian paradise of Saipan for 9 years. Trips to Guam and sojourns back to the States enabled her to purchase necessary fabrics for all the projects she had for their three girls and the house. Now in Rough and Ready, she has a spacious studio where guests can sleep, mini-groups can convene and she can spend time each day. Cheerful Cyl let me know this private space is the perfect recipe for contentment. Her two Janomes (Horizon Memory Craft 7700 and MyExcel) sit across from each other, both shiny and pristine. This most blissful space is decorated with lavender walls, floral art quilts, and neatly stacked fabric florals. A large design wall allows her to audition her Kaffe amethysts and fuchsias for her next project. Three hope chests house a concert of softly hued queen-sized quilts ready for gifting or rotating through her home. Cyl s Kaffe florals with rich aquas and turquoises give new meaning to the term jewel-toned. Belonging to three mini-groups keeps Cyl busy and motivated. Friends, Millie Folda and Ruby Foster, are great traveling companions. Five days at Zephyr Cove is a favorite every August. Classes, seminars, vendors and raffles capture her interest. Uncommon Threads, Scrapbaggers and a special set of Saipenese friends gather for quilting sessions, even knitting. For the most part, Cyl s fondness is romantic color schemes, but sadly, she says, My favorite color, pink, just doesn t lend itself for making a great quilt color scheme. There remains, however, an unhurried softness to her smart choice of pink s heartier cousins- rich magentas, fuchsias and amethysts. Cyl s grand studio, painted two shades of lavender, prove their effectiveness. Jeanie Ferguson Patchwork Star Reporter
