1 The Pine Needle Press Volume 29, Issue 7 Pine Tree Quilt Guild July 2012 A newsletter o f the Pi ne Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County, having ta ken root in the fabric o f the Grass Valley community since Published monthly except August Nola Court, Auburn uiltguild.com July President s Message Well, summer is here and already we are halfway through the year. It has been a fast six months, but I have really been enjoying my time serving as the Pine Tree Quilt Guild President A little grayer on the top perhaps, but so much the wiser! J You are a nice group, and your quilts amaze me every month. I m looking forward to the Picnic on July 3 rd. Nancyan Tracy is busy making plans and arrangements, and we will join together at 6:00 pm, at the LDS Pavilion on Hollow Way in Nevada City. Come along and bring a quilt for Show and Tell, and also bring your favorite picnic item to add to the Potluck. August is a dark month, meaning we do not have a Guild meeting, nor do we publish a Newsletter. However, our Guild does participate in the Nevada County Fair by volunteering to White Glove. Val Hixson and Lettie Lewis are taking sign-ups and would love to hear from you. Sign up with a friend and make it a fun few hours meeting fairgoers and fellow quilters. September means the first 2013 Quilt Show Committee meeting takes place! Now is your opportunity to get on board and be a part of one of the best quilt shows around. Carol Riddles has reported that the available committee positions are: Quilt Show Chair, Props, Baskets, Awards, Judging, Large Banners, Set Up/ Take Down, Publicity, Vendors, Equipment, Layout, and possibly Silent Auction. There are binders for each Committee, and fellow committee chairs are always there willing to help answer questions that may come up along the way. Many members like to pair up and co-chair a committee together. I highly recommend this, as it lightens the work load, and is a lot of fun. Give me a call or drop me an , and we can talk about what the different committees actually do, or what committee interests you. Sign up to help us have a wonderful quilt show that we can all be proud of. We have many guests who are counting on us to put on another terrific show next year! ** President s Message continued on page 2 ** INSIDE THIS ISSUE Presendit's Message 1 General Meeting Minutes 8 Guild Meeting Dates 2 Hall of Honor 11 Guild Challenge 2 Share and Care 12 Community Services 2 Featured Affiliate 12 Treasurer Report 3 Join A Mini Group 12 Quilt Shows & Events 3 For Sale 12 Education Outreach Affiliates 13 Board Meeting Minutes Officers & Board Members 14 New & Returning Members 7

This year my volunteers and I worked in 4 third grade classrooms.we started the year off in November with our holiday project, Snowman Pillows. Then we had a short break and worked with three 3rd grade classes at Scotten School making Mother's Day Pillows. We worked with approximately 90 students in total. Everything went smoothly and the weather even cooperated (no show days to reschedule). It can get hectic and noisy working with a group of eight to nine year old students but we always have fun, never a dull moment. I would like to give a great BIG thanks to the women who volunteered to help me, I couldn't do it without them. So Thank You, Karen Mitchell, Susan Hopkins, Mary Ross, Alice Ruth Mischke,Bev Merrit, the Cooks-Tamara, Naomi, Molly and Heidi, Carolyn Christiansen, and Clairie Carter. Special thanks to LaVeta Nevius for cutting all the fabric for me. I look forward to starting up again in the fall. If any new members want to get involved in this endeavor just give me a call. It really is fun sewing with the kids, passing on our love of sewing to future generations. Have a Happy Summer!!! ~ Robin Mello, Education Outreach, Quilt Shows Events

10 The Pine Needle Press Page 10 Pine Tree Quilt Guild General Meeting Minutes DRAFT Minutes for June 5, 2012 Drawings - Quarter Yard/Mystery Gift drawing winners were: Gaby, Susan Robertson, Sharon Ellisor, Robin Prector (a guest), Lois Hodges, Gloria Smith, Deidra Campbell and Phyllis Brodie SPEAKER - Our speaker this evening Colleen Granger, is introduced by Lynda Lasich. Colleen Granger s How did you do that. Colleen advises she buys fabric by the bolt or yard cuts, not fat quarters. She uses any tools that are handy, not necessarily from the quilt stores. Some of those items are: Freezer Paper, for appliqué, to cover the surface of an ironing board, to fuse with fabric and run through the printer, to stabilize fabric with writing on fabric, and to use for crazy quilts, because the crazy quilt fabric shows. Cookie Cutters use as a diagram for quilting. Painters Tape, do not use the green, frog tape, use the blue. She uses this to mark grid lines for design. Hole reinforcements You can get colors at back-to-school time. Uses them for marking a ruler for squaring up blocks, you just aim for the center of the block that way. Sharpie Markets on templates for fussy cutting design. Using rubbing alcohol will take off pen, or you can use Goof Off stuff. Double Stick tape you can attach to fabric to paper templates. Washable school glue stick to hold appliqué or other fabric pieces temporarily. Washes out. Used dryer sheets to clean iron. Laser Labels (1 x 1-3/4) to make your quilt rows. You can iron over them, as the LASER labels are made to be used with heat, do not use Ink Jet Labels or you will have a mess. Plastic Bread ties keep on bottom post to be used behind the eye of the needle when threading your machine. CT Vellum for appliquéing. Colleen has developed a Quilt Shaper. It s a holder made of stainless steel cord with connector of twist ties to be used to hold quilt shapes. It can be bent, and shaped to hold your not square quilt. Kris thanked Colleen for her presentation, and said those that signed up for her workshop will be very happy. Next board meeting: Thursday, June 14, 7:00 p.m. at Eskaton. Next general meeting: Tuesday, September, 4 th, 2012 beginning, 6:30 p.m. at Hennessy School The meeting was adjourned by Kris Cook. Respectfully submitted by Anita Dall, Secretary.
