The Pine Needle Press Volume 27, Issue 1 Pine Tree Quilt Guild January 2011 A newsletter o f the Pi ne Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County, having ta ken root in the fa bric o f the Grass Valley community since Publi shed monthly except August Nola Court, Auburn netreequiltguild.com January s President s Message Well, here we go, on to another adventure. When I got a call from Clairie asking me to run for Guild vice president, and then to go on as president, I was truly surprised and honored. I am pleased to have the opportunity to serve an organization that I respect, and that is such a asset to the community. At first, I was apprehensive about my first president s message, but, I figure if 27 others had done it before me, I could do it too. I have had many of the members tell me they would help me in navigating the intricacies involved in the presidency. That s a REAL BIG COMFORT. When I first joined this Guild 15 years ago, I had never made a quilt. However, I met some of the nicest ladies I have ever known who took me under their wings, and soon quilting became my passion. And, yes, I am still learning how to sew an accurate ¼ inch seam. To all of those who have so graciously agreed to chair a committee this year, I thank you. The Guild is in need of a few committee chairs, Publicity, Mystery Gifts, and the Holiday Party. These positions need not be chaired by any one individual. They can be chaired by two people, a mini group, or any other combination. Committee chairs, please attend the first board meeting in January. This will be held on January 13, 7:00 p.m. at Eskaton. Your attendance is important so we can meet each other, and set the tone for the year. If you were a chair last year and are not continuing on this year, please return your chairmanship books so they can be passed on to the new committee chairs. I am so proud of our Guild s service to the community. It is hard to believe that over 700 quilts were made and distributed this last year. Community Service is truly a service of love. All of you who participated are applauded and appreciated. I hope this year will be a service year as well. Looking forward to a great 2011!!!!! ~ Anita Inside this issue: Affiliates...10 Anniversaries...7 Birthdays...7 Board Members List...17 Christmas/Holiday Party...12 Community Services...6 Dropped Stitches...5 For Sale... 7 Guild Challenge... 6 Guild Contact Information.18 Guild Meeting Dates... 2 Guild Workshop Reminders 9 Home Workshops...11 Library...6 Meeting Minutes...8 Membership Renewal...8 Opportunity Tickets...2 Patchwork Star...4 Program & Workshop...11 Programs Schedule...3 Quilt show app Judged...15 Quilt show app Show only...16 Quilt Show News...8 Quilt Show Guidelines...13 Quilters Wisdom...12 Quilting Shows & Events...7 Share & Care...2 Treasurer s Report...10

The Pine Needle Press Page 3 Christine Barnes Januar y Speaker & Workshop Our speaker for January 4th is Christine Barnes. Christine is a writer, teacher, and contemporary quilter in love with color. The Grass Valley area has been her home for more than 28 years. Christine has degrees in design and journalism and has written more than a dozen books on color, design, and decorating, including Color: The Quilter s Guide (Martingale) and Color for your Home (Sunset Books.) She has written for many quilting magazines and has appeared on Simply Quilts. Christine s workshop on Wednesday January 5th is Black Opals and Ribbon Candy. Value, visual temperature, and intensity these classic color concepts come into play in the making of this graphic quilt. The workshop begins with a crash course in color, followed by tips on combining colors and patterns to Black Opals by Christine Barnes create the illusion of black opals in the foreground and lustrous look of ribbon candy in the background. Students will construct the triangle units and strip+pieced rectangles that make up the row construction. Later in the day, we ll discuss adding the spinning borders. The class is open to all level of quilters. To sign up for the January workshop call Betsy Tyler at or Fran Thomas at , PTQG Program Schedule Linda Ballard Februar y Speaker and Workshop Linda Ballard will be the speaker for February. Linda has been an avid sewer all her life but is now creating traditional quilts. She lives in Redding, CA and has been both a quilt shop owner and a customer. Since closing her shop in 1991, Linda now travels throughout the country teaching. She writes her own patterns using traditional blocks but adds new techniques to them. She sells her workbooks through her website at She has been published in many magazines. Linda will present Discover the Possibilities at her lecture. This will give you ideas on how to look at a quilt and make it come true.

The Pine Needle Press Page 4 P a t F r ye r, P a t c h w o r k S t a r f o r J a n u a r y When fabric designer Kaffe Fassett stops in his tracks to pause and comment on your quilt, you must consider it a Perfect Moment. At the International Quilt Show in Houston last year Pat showed her Villa Rosa patterns sewed with Kaffe s fabrics. Perfect Moment became that quilts official name. An entrepreneur extreme, Pat has her own line of lap-sized quilt patterns: simple and straightforward. Preferring splashy and iconic Kaffe Fasset and Amy Butler floral's to show off the fabrics, Pat claims, I do everyday stuff. Her quilts may be executed from start to finish in 3 weeks. Students feel an immediate sense of accomplishment. Patterns on small glossy cards are concise, gorgeously illustrated and achievable. Each pattern is named after a real rose variety. Rosarians will recognize Perfect Moment, Easy Does It, Carnival Glass and Angel Face. She will be featuring 10 new ones in her boot at Salt Lake City s Spring Market. Pat has owned quiet stores in many locations (Turlock, Sacramento, Oakdale, Modesto and Carmel) spanning 30 years! She now maintains a home business selling her pattern cards and fabric kits by mail/ internet nationwide. With her trusty 20 year old Nolting s long arm (the forerunner of Gammil) Pat takes in quilting projects from near and far. Again, her designs are free-motion, simple and elegant. Self-assured and energetic, Pat fervently explained her entry into the sewing world. Working at her school cafeteria at age 10, she gathered enough money to purchase her own sewing machine! Mom and grandma, sewers too, were always encouraging. Interestingly, Pat employs many fabric cuts in terms of 6th s. A 1/6 cut is 12x22 making a 10½ inch square the perfect measurement for a simple block. Her kits may also include the ubiquitous fat quarter. And, my favorite Villa Rosa pattern required a stunning bundle of three 1-yard cuts. Coordinating closely with Carol Phillips, Pat s community service involvement is burgeoning. I love digging in my closet to see what I can come up with. Her kits and patterns are freely shared. With a 2-car garage stuffed to the rafters with her wares, there s a Fort Know (or 16 to 1) gold mine. Still to be unearthed are upwards of 50 labeled and bilidded boxes of scraps. But, unapologetically, Pat interjected, I would rather color-coordinate my quilts than do a scrappy. Those bolts of Kaffe down one aisle and those bolts of Amy down the next aisle keep heartily beckoning. Two industrial strength Brothers keep up with Pat s inexhaustible sense of urgency and purpose. It s as though less is more, pursuing her quick, no-nonsense approach to quilt-making. The patina of time has proven to Pat that any newbie wants, needs and receives immediate gratification and encouragement. The cherry on top of this sundae is that Pat Fryer is now giving all of us a positive buzz, sharing her savvy and infectious enthusiasm. We salute you! ~ Jeanie Ferguson, Patchwork Star Reporter

The Pine Needle Press Page 5 Dropped Stitches UFO Projects A UFO can be a quilt of any size, in any state of completion such as a top, a stack of blocks, wall hanging, pattern & fabric, etc. A number from 1-10 will be drawn and the project you have assigned that number to will need to be completed and shown the following month. If you don t have 10, add to the list as you come up with some. Let me know so it will be counted. Return a copy to me and keep one for your files. We will strut and showoff after show & tell each month. Prizes will be awarded. A big prize will be awarded for those who finish the most projects. Quilt Show Good News: We have a setup/take down person; Lynda Lasich has graciously volunteered to head that committee for us. Now what we need is someone to market the quilt. I simply cannot continue to do this job as well as the quilt show chairperson job, so I really need someone to step up. I will be happy to help but not as the front seat on this committee. It s up to you. If you want us to make the $$ s needed for our operating expenses next year, then we need to get this quilt out there. Please call me, Em Sun, as my computer is on the fritz. My phone number is Also, as Carol Riddles has become the co-chair (yea, yippee, yahoo), and will be our new quilt show chair for next year (see hooray s above), she has had to resign her position as the equipment chair for both the quilt show as well as the equipment chair for the guild. So, there are two other jobs which need doing. If you are new to the guild, or you have just been wondering what you can do for the guild, here s your opportunity. Call either Anita Dall regarding the guild equipment chair position, or call me, Em Sun, for the equipment chair for the quilt show. For either position, you will need some kind of truck or large vehicle with which to transport our equipment. ~ Em Sun, Quilt Show Chairperson

The Pine Needle Press Page 12 Christmas/Holida y Part y I want to give a big thank you to all who attended the party this year. Also, to all those who brought their recipes, it really made it fun. It was very close to determine the winner. Of course, it was a recipe with no name on it. So, to keep the suspense a little longer, it was in the dessert family. Be sure to show up for the January meeting to get your prize. Also, to all who initialed the recipes, be there to get your copies. I am happy to have some new dishes to try on my family. I want to thank Ruth-Mary Harrop for preparing her students to give such a wonderful performance for us to enjoy as we ate. And, the biggest thanks I have is for my mini-group, the Pine Needles. They worked so hard to help me to get this together and to wrap it up. They are Clairie Carter, Deirdre Campbell, Bev Meritt, Karen Havle and Lani Brunmeier. Also, thanks to Janene Powell and Niki Phillips for setting up the coffee table. Thank you for all coming and enjoying yourself. ~ Judy Vaughn Quilters Wisdom Some people may wonder at a quilter s passion for fabric, thread, and batting, but every quilter knows how much quilting helps to make life worth living. ~ Author Unknown
