1 The Pine Needle Press Volume 28, Issue 10 Pine Tree Quilt Guild November 2011 A newsletter o f the Pi ne Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County, having ta ken root in the fabric o f the Grass Valley community since Published monthly except August Nola Court, Auburn uiltguild.com Novembers President s Message Well, this year has certainly flown by. The weather is changing and Thanksgiving and the Holidays are quickly approaching. As always, community service needs Christmas stockings, walker bags, and small wall hangings. The seniors in our area look forward to receiving these gifts. For some, these are the only gifts they will receive. We are a little behind with the slate of officers which should have been listed for the October meeting. That being said, the slate for 2012 is as follows: Kris Cook, President Judy Johnston, Treasurer Sharon Cook, Vice President Anita Dall, Secretary The board has recommended a budget for Please review so the budget can be voted upon in January. Speaking of board meetings, we had 11 attendees (including myself) at the last board meeting. If you a committed chair, please attend. Even if you do not have a report, your input and voting power are needed. The world of quilting with the internet and social media is here. Whether you like it, love it are confused by it or hate it, the internet is changing the way we learn, share and communicate about quilting and quilts. You can interact with quilters all over the world by yourself or with others, from your home, shop, or friendship group meeting. Watch our website transition during the next several months, and you will see how much easier it is going to be to navigate. Also, watch for a Facebook page for the PTQG. ~Anita INSIDE THIS ISSUE 2012 Membership 3 Holiday Challenge 8 President's Message Proposed Budget 7 Home Workshop 9 Project Linus 2 Affiliates 12 Junior Quiltors 3 Quilt Show & Events 9 Anniversaries 10 Meeting Minutes 6 Quilt Show Board Meeting 10 Birthdays 9 Membership Form 4 Quilt Show News 8 Community Service 2 Mini Groups 5 Share and Care 10 Featured Affiliates 11 Newsletter Trouble 6 Speaker's Workshop 5 For Sale 10 Officers and Board Members 13 Sutter Quilt Auction 11 Guild Meeting Dates 2 Paid Newsletters 6 Treasurer's Report 6

Please come and help on November 17 from 9 am to 3 pm, or for just an hour or two. There are a number of tops that still need to be quilted - could any of you long arm folks take a couple to do? There have been quite a few walker bags turned in - thanks to all who did them - I know they'll be appreciated in the nursing homes along with quilts and stockings for which we've already had some requests. We will soon do our annual calling and be ready for distribution early in December. Is there anyone out there with a few hours to spare each month to become a "regular" with Community Services and Drop-in? It is a very big job, and I could really use someone who would like to "learn the ropes" and be available on a regular basis. If you'd like to know more come and visit at Drop-in or please call me! Carol Phillips See you on Nov. 17th there will be chocolate! ~ Carol Phillips Linus Project For anyone who has a project to donate to the Linus Project it may be dropped off at either Ben Franklin s in Grass Valley or at the West America bank located in Penn Valley within the Holiday Shopping Center. Please attach a slip of paper with your name, address, address, and phone number so that they can keep you informed of what they are doing. For more information check out their website at: ~ Pat Rose

3 The Pine Needle Press Page 3 Junior Quilters The Juniors are just finishing up table runners, placemats and napkins. Some stayed with the basic pattern, and others substituted much more difficult paper pieced designs. They continually astonish me with their creativity! Molly Cook helped me greatly by showing me the relaxed way she does free motion quilting. She helped me set up my machine settings and with the proper foot. Now that is a good reason to be a Jr Quilter mentor...so the kids can teach you valuable skills! November Guild Meeting - Jr Quilter Rebekah Lundin will be our patchwork star. Be there to support her. In November, we are going to have our own affiliate member Sharon Cook as a guest teacher. She will be showing the kids how to make her exclusive design - Origami Bag - a Japanese Style Drawstring Bag. This will be great for Christmas presents and to put presents in. A good time to join the Jr Quilters: Nov. 12 th ~ Junior Quilter Facilitators: Dianne M. Rockwell, , diannmkpv@aol.com, Robin Mello, Membership I know it seems early but not too early to think about your 2012 dues. You can find a membership form in the newsletter and also on the web site. Please fill the form out and return to me at the meeting or in the mail. It would be great to mail it to me rather than the post office box, but either way works. Also PLEASE fill the whole form out even if everything is the same as last year; it helps the membership chairman to have all the information. We all know that times have been challenging, to say the least; if anyone has a problem paying their dues, please let someone that you feel comfortable telling and they will make things happen for you. The Guild has a donation fund that can help anyone that needs help. We must have your dues by January 15 so you can be included in the roster. Pay them now and not worry about it later! $25 dues, $22 additional if you want your newsletter printed and mailed. ALL MEMBERSHIP FORMS MUST BE SIGNED. ~ Clairie, Membership Ardy Tobin, Computer Records

5 The Pine Needle Press Page 5 Census/ Update for our Mini Groups It is time to do an update - census - data base of our beloved mini groups. It would be interesting to find out of our Guild members, how many are in mini - groups and exactly how many mini groups our Guild has. Some new mini - groups have formed and maybe some have dropped out of the picture. I would very much appreciate your help in the gathering of this information. I have been mini - group chairperson for several years now -- and I am currently looking for a replacement for the job. The best part of the job is meeting the new members and finding a mini - group for them. With the new updated "census" that I am putting together - the job will be much easier. Please contact me or Kris Cook if you would like to take on this relatively easy and rewarding job. PLEASE -- what I would like you to do is... Have one (1) CONTACT person in your mini group me diannmkpv@aol.com with the following information: 1. the name of your group 2. day(s) and time you meet each month 3. how many are in your mini group -- and of that number - how many are not guild members 4. at this moment - would you like to have new members? Your assistance with this project will save me lots of phone calls. Thank you! Dianne M. Rockwell, Mini - Group Chairperson (530) , diannmkpv@aol.com Speaker s Workshop Jill Schumacher, award winning machine quilter from Trinidad, is scheduled for a speaker s workshop on Nov. 2. An expert quilter, she will show us what is involved in creating trapunto in quilts. There are a few openings in the workshop, so call Carol Gates at to reserve your seat. ~ Lynda Lasich, Workshops

8 The Pine Needle Press Page 8 Quilt Show Committee New s I am so pleased to announce that all the open chairs have been filled and we have a full complement of board members for the 2012 Quilt Show Board. We meet the 3rd Tues. of the month at 7:00 at Escaton in the 49er Room. We will be looking at ways to increase attendance, our vendors and revenue among other things. I want to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has volunteered to be on the board for This Board is very talented and innovative and I am either very fortunate or just plain lucky. We are going to have a wonderful Quilt Show in Carol Riddles The Opportunity Quilt The Opportunity Quilt for 2012 is a different story. The current quilt still does not have handlers to coordinate its appearances. This quilt merits the benefits of worthwhile marketing. It still needs two to three or more volunteers to take on this job. One of the librarians in Nevada City said they might be able to sell tickets at the library. Also, it shouldn't be too hard for our guild members who belong to other guilds to take the quilt along with them to those meetings. These are just some ideas that might work. The Opportunity Quilt for 2013 needs to be planned very soon. I requested some suggestions at the last guild meeting, so far there have been two. One is more of a theme, 'Pine Trees and Magnolias' and the other a pattern concept, a 'Stack-N-Whack center with an Applique boarder'. I think those two could be combined nicely. The Board meeting. Thurs. night produced another idea. How about a Crazy Quilt similar to the one that was so incredibly popular in 2006? It holds the record for the highest money maker to date. We pass out squares in different colors of silk to each guild member. Once the individual squares are decorated according to each persons interests, they are handed in and assembled into a queen size quilt. I don't know if it's the lo' Girl Scout leader in me, but I Love It!!!!! me soon (carol-riddles@yahoo.com) with your reaction. We barely have nine month to hatch this baby. These two quilts are significant supporters of our annual budget. This guild is terrific, let's work together and get this done. Carol Riddles, Quilt Show Chair Holida y Challenge / 3 halves make a w hole Ladies, I hope you are finishing up your quilts! We will be exchanging our quilts on December 3rd at 12:00 pm. It will be a potluck at Clairie Carter's house, 505 Linden Ave. If you have any questions, please call me. Deirdre Campbell,

We have a large supply store for longarm quilters that includes thread, patterns, needles, and parts for Gammill machines. We are an authorized Gammill dealer specializing in longarm supplies and classes in Creative Studio and Vision Quilting Machines. Featured Affiliate: Debys Sierra Sew ing After over 35 years of working on machines, it still surprises me when I hear someone say I was told it didn t need service! The only one that would say to you is someone who wants you to purchase a new machine. All sewing machines need maintenance just like cars. All factories would like you to have your machine serviced about every two years. Keeping your machine happy is my pleasure. Featured Affiliate: Christine Barnes Designs Christine is a contemporary quilter whose passion is color. Popular workshops include Color Camp, Luminosity, transparency, Black Opals & Ribbon Candy, and Color and Collage: Aspects of Designs. Her latest book, The Quilters Color Club, has just been published by C&T; she also has a number of quilt and garment patterns, as well as a color wheel based on fabric. Christine teaches for guilds and private groups regionally and locally at Sugar Pine Quilt Shop. SUTTER MEDICAL CENTER QUILT AUCTION Remember to visit Sutter Hospital Cancer center during October to see all the quilts hung for silent auction, and also those set aside for the live auction the first Saturday in November. The Cancer Center is easy to find, parking is easy, and it is worth the drive! You might even find a quilt you feel compelled to bid on! If you have questions, please feel free to call me or ask Bonnie at Sugar Pine Quilt Shop. Thank you! ~ Carol Phillips
