1 The Pine Needle Press Volume 32 Issue 9 Pine Tree Quilt Guild November A newsletter of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County, having taken root in the fabric of the Grass Valley community since Published monthly except August Banner Mine Way, Nevada City Pine Tree Quilt Guild presents its own, Ingrid Cattaneo, for its November program! Lecture: Date: The Art of Fabric Collage and Trunk Show Nov. 3rd. 6:30 p.m. Grass Valley Charter School Workshop: Date: Juvenile Garibaldi Fish Nov. 4th p.m. Seventh Day Adventist Church Ingrid has been hooked on quilting since receiving her first ribbon at the Nevada County Fair in Over the years she has made many traditional quilts for family and friends. When she discovered art quilts, she immediately jumped in. She s gained confidence with thread painting and free motion machine embroidery. In the past three years she s been teaching fabric collage classes. Discovering fabric collage in 2011 has truly liberated and captivated her. Join her for this fun and colorful class in creating a beautiful juvenile garibaldi fish. Orange is the new fish!! There are only two spots left in the class, so contact Kathleen if you are interested in learning the technique. All are invited to join Ingrid and Heidi for dinner at Kane s at 4:30 pm. Dutch treat where everyone pays for themselves Contact Kathleen Stanley to sign up for the workshop. Ingrid Cattaneo IMPORTANT MESSAGE: DUES INCREASE PASSES The membership overwhelmingly voted to increase dues from $25 to $30 per year. This step will not only strengthen our finances but will also allow us to do more of what the members want. Several people commented that the dues should have been raised to $35. If you want to contribute extra money to the Guild, there is a space on the membership registration form to do so. You can also specify where you would like the money to go. All contributions are welcome and appreciated. Kate Grant, President Congratulations to our newly elected officers! Members, this is your new 2016 executive Board: President: Diane Klose Treasurer: Pat Gillings Vice President: Susie Hardy Co-Secretaries: Carolyn Christiansen and Sharon Ellisor Thank you for stepping up to direct our Guild this next year. I am sure you will do an excellent job. Kate Grant
2 The Pine Needle Press Page 2 Greetings Guild Members President s November Message The Guild has risen to the occasion by voting to increase our dues. Thank you for your generosity and for voting with your pocketbook for the continued excellence of the Guild. Taking into account our recent budget issues and the dues increase and to be clear on our priorities, I thought now would be a good time to revisit the Guild's originally stated purpose (Bylaws, page 1). It reads: The purpose shall be to contribute to the growth of knowledge about quilting techniques, patterns, history, and quilt making by providing educational meetings, fun and fellowship. The guild sponsors and supports charitable quilting activities, encourages quilt making and collecting, and promotes the appreciation and knowledge of quilts. While planning the budget, the budget committee kept this purpose in mind, in addition to the recent survey responses and comments from individual members. The new dues income plus additional income from an extra opportunity quilt, along with cuts in lower priority areas will allow us to have a jamboree next year (!) and have a balanced budget. The proposed budget was approved by the Board and is displayed in this issue of our newsletter. The members will vote on it at our December meeting. Quilt life is looking good. Starting with a simple Pinwheel pattern, we will cut and sew and turn the Pin Wheel into a Butterfly! To make this quilt you'll need forty-10" squares. You can use Layer Cakes, Yardage, or my favorite, Scraps! Come sign up and get your complete supply list for this FREE Home workshop. November 19th, 9;30 to 2 at the SDA Church. I want to take this opportunity to THANK all the Teachers and all the GUILD MEMBERS who have taken part in our Home Workshop program over the last two years. I'm going to step aside and let another guild member continue with Home Workshop for I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed making new friends, and learning right along with you. PLEASE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT HOME WORKSHOPS!! Until then...keep ON QUILTING Betty Maddox and Eleanor Sagely Any questions contact: Betty at cbmaddox@att.net Eleanor at quiltbug6@yahoo.com Patchwork Star for November 2015 Trudie Ferreira As our seemingly endless and arduous summer heat wanes, autumn beckons, leaving long steely shadows. With energetic tenacity, Trudie welcomes this seasonal drama. Fall's endearing cinnamons, saffrons and tangerines fill her all-time favorite palette. Wall quilts with bunnies and owls, the maple's rich foliage, ferns and hidden glades represent an appetite not sated. She's still in love with her Washington state roots. Trudie, unabashedly candid, interjects: Our dogs, Gracie and Misty, live upstairs and my cats (hers only) Bella and Zoey live in the sewing studio. It's a happenin' place with dedicated rooms, garages and spaces for everyone's very serious hobbies. Husband Rod, a veteran car guy, maintains a jaw-dropping fleet. When I went around each corner, my eyes popped out. With that, Trudie chortled: And this is his train room! And this is his woodworking studio! Bella and Zoey share a 30x30 sewing studio with free roaming privileges. Stash messes are these felines' biggest delight. Calling it lonely Trudie admits she's not as fond of her Bernina as she is in love with her Janome Horizon. Her next adventure is to master free motion quilting, leaving behind an amateur's frenzied ziggedy-zaggedy stitch. Fun-loving and spirited Trudie, is comfortable with having UFO's. Calmly, she claims, I just pick out the urgent ones. I was always a tomboy she quips. Ready for adventure, jocular and unassailably plucky, Trudie is off to Houston for a week with her northwest friends. She's been to Sisters, Asilomar, and Art Tahoe. Her goal is to attend The Road to California. She craves classes, saying, There's always something to be learned, even if I don't finish the project. Artistic Alchemy (Christine, Heidi and Sandra) presented several recent workshops at Tahoe. Christine's Transparencies has captured Trudie's insatiable desire for strategizing fabric selections. It sounded something like freshman botanical science where the light green peas are mated with the dark green peas... you get the picture. (Light plus dark equals medium) From the big city corporate world of Customer Service, Trudie never would have believed she'd be hooked on fabric, using fine motor skills, finessing hues, assessing and harmonizing layers of batiks. Her jump right in and do it mentality has benefitted our Guild aplenty. She and fellow Bent Needle Divas are working on our 2017 Opportunity Quilt. Trudie continues to energize any gathering, letting her bouncy assuredness spirit away anyone's dull day. She's a real fun gal. Picking out fall patterns, surveying shelves of quilting books, and buying scores of batik jelly rolls has become a passionate pursuit. I know we'll be seeing more turtles, more birds, more trees, naturally trending towards burnt siennas, paprikas and terra cottas. Trudie creates a perfect autumnal setting. 4 The Pine Needle Press Page 4 Affiliate of the Month: Terial Arts Terry McFeely, owner Coyote Mountain Trail Nevada City, CA cell home terry@terialarts.com Terial Arts was created for the DIYer! Terial Magic Spray fabric stabilizer works wonderfully for making 3-D flowers and art or 3D quilts. Terial Magic treated fabric is perfect for raw edge applique quilting, machine embroidery, inkjet printing or electronic cutting machine without any other traditional stabilizer! Terial Magic comes in 3 sizes. Other products of Terial Arts are quilt and flower patterns plus color coded floral wire and snap clips. Visit the website for fun fabric ideas and free projects! Guild Challenge This year the Guild Challenge is Forest Fantasy. This theme is also the theme for our 2016 Quilt Show. The challenge quilts will be hung together at the show. There will be a description of what they are and the winners should have their ribbons attached. There are many kinds of trees in many kinds of forests so you do not have to be limited to the Tahoe National Forest as your basis. There are forests of kelp and seaweed in the ocean; there are rock forests on islands and numerous imaginative forests all over. Pick your favorite and go from there. The usual rules: no size or shape requirements, three layers top, backing & batting, finished and brought to the March Guild meeting for display and voting. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Best Use of Theme, Best Appliqué, Best Art, Best Traditional, Most Humorous and Favorite Quilt. If you have any questions, please call me. My number is in the directory. Lois Hodges, Guild Challenge Chair WE CARE UPDATE! We have received 170 quilts for distribution by Tuesday, October 20th. THANK YOU! There have been some concerns about where the quilts are going. ALL the quilts are going to the Butte Fire victims. We are working with the Calaveras Unified School District to provide quilts for the students and their families, staff and retirees who lost their homes (67). Additional quilts will be given to the remaining 500 families possibly not in the school system. We will make arrangements for this distribution if needed. There have also been some questions about WE CARE verses PTQG Community Service. WE CARE was created to help those in need outside of our community. It is actually a "disaster fund" rather than a "charitable fund", therefore making it a tax deductible donation. We have received overwhelming support and thus have fabric and batting donations we will not be able to utilize due to the time element. Be assured, your donations will not go unused. These will be kept separate from Community Service, since they were donated specifically for WE CARE. We will put kits together, just like we have for CS. Anyone wishing to make a quilt can contact us for a kit. These quilts will be saved until there is another cause WE CARE feels worthy. It would be nice to have a stock pile. We came up with this idea on September 17. Less than a month later...we have 119 quilts. We can't tell you how proud we are to be a part of this group of quilters who have stepped up with money, time and love to help our Gold Country neighbors. Shirley Bell, the Executive Assistant to the Superintendent Calaveras Unified School District, summed it up...she said, "This is really heartwarming." Thank you to everyone who has participated. Your quilts are beautiful...and we can feel the love in every stitch...so will the recipients. Kathy Biggi and Lorna Straka
5 The Pine Needle Press Page 5 Community Services and Drop In and Sew Community Service meets on the third Thursday (most months), 9:30 3:00, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Osborne Hill Road, Grass Valley. There is only ONE MORE CS day this year November 19. If you have any finished CS quilts, please turn them in at the November guild meeting or CS Thursday. Kathy s latest idea for CS is to sponsor a "First Annual CS Block Party"! She has made up kits for a variety of fun blocks using scraps and yielding 10-inch or larger blocks. You can take a block kit, return by December meeting, and the blocks will be sewn together to make a top. If EVERYONE makes just one or two blocks, we would be able to make several tops. November CS Special Program Lorna Straka will share her binding technique on 19 November. Sign up at the November meeting. Quilts will be available for you to practice on. We look forward to seeing you there! 2015 Community Service Dates November 19 December Distribution Wednesday, 2 nd REMEMBER, there is NO CS in December Cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting?
