The Pine Needle Press Volume 31 Issue 8 Pine Tree Quilt Guild September A newsletter of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County, having taken root in the fabric of the Grass Valley community since Published monthly except August Banner Mine Way, Nevada City September Speaker and Workshop Carrie Fondi Quilting since 1992, Carrie Ann Fondi is skilled in the art of Hawaiian applique. This technique developed in the Islands in the early 1800s. After studying with many Hawaiian quilters, this became a full time passion when she created Melia Quilts in 2010 to sell her hawaiian quilt patterns and to promote the art of hawaiian quilting. Her designs are inspired by the beauty of nature and her love for the islands. She teaches hawaiian quilting throughout the United States. Discover this unique art and learn the history and traditions of Hawaiian quilting. Carrie will share stories of the evolution of the art as well as the meanings behind the patterns and the superstitions and kapu (taboos) in making them. She ll do this while sharing some of the quilts in her collection. The workshop on Wednesday, September 3rd, will be Hawaiian quilting. You may use your own pattern or one of hers. Hers can be found at meliaquilts.com. Come join in the fun of learning a new technique Contact Kathleen Stanley for additional workshop information and to reserve your spot. kathleens@nccn.net or President s Message and Table of Contents page 2 IMPORTANT Changes in By-Laws The following bylaw change is recommended by the Board and intended to have better timing for our budget process in order to have budget in place BEFORE the year end. It will make budget planning for the following year easier and avoid possible program conflicts in January. There will be a vote at the September 2 general meeting. The budget committee will meet September 14 at a time and place to be determined. For additional information please contact Karle deprosse or Anne Wilson. See page 11 for contact information Section 3, C: Budget committee shall meet in September and shall consist of not less than five (5) members: the current President, Vice President, Treasurer and Finance Chair and at least one (1) member from the general membership. They shall submit a budget to the Executive Board at the October board meeting. The budget shall be submitted to the general membership via newsletter prior to the January December general meeting. The budget will be presented to the general membership for approval at the January December general meeting. Any future changes shall be approved by the general membership.

The Pine Needle Press Page 2 Dear Members, September President s Message I have been thinking about all that we, as members of PTQG, receive for our $25 membership dues each year: 1. Quality speakers or informational, fun programs 11 months each year 2. Camaraderie of other quilters, friendships, mini groups, roster, newsletter, organized quilting activities (challenges, mystery quilt, round robin, etc.) 3. Speaker workshops with much of cost underwritten by guild are only $25 for members 4. Monthly FREE Home Workshops 5. Annual FREE Jamboree when funds are available 6. Pride of being part of our Community Services: awarding $3,000 annually in scholarships, making and donating hundreds of quilts annually to the needy in Nevada County, Junior Quilters, spreading the skills and history of quilting through Education Outreach In order to provide the above activities we have an annual budget, in 2014, of $27,662 of income. $8,170 of that is from Quilt Show profit, $3,992 is from out savings account. It is clear that we cannot continue to provide all of the noted activities without the Quilt Show income and cutting back on spending. As I write this we do not yet have a volunteer to chair the Quilt Show. MANY energetic and reliable volunteers have already stepped forward to serve on the QS committee. Missing are the Chairperson (coordinator), Basket Chair and Publicity Chair. Most of the other committees are already covered Equipment, Setup, Lunchroom, Country Store, Treasurer, Secretary, Silent Auction, Vendors, and more The fairgrounds are reserved, meetings scheduled, etc., we just need someone to coordinate the process. Please consider volunteering, alone or with a friend as co-chair, for our openings. Barbara Ceresa, last year s chair, will mentor and train the show chair. 4 The Pine Needle Press Page 4 Patchwork Star for September 2014 Barbara Stein This month s bragging rights belong to Barbara Stein Simply because her Americana folk art circles are utterly sublime Using the starch and freezer paper method, she hand appliques perfect orbs using Karen Kay Buckley's package of assorted Perfect Circles. A lusty assemblage of circles occurs in most of Barbara's motifs. Reminiscent of Baltimore Album designs, her quilts are always huge kings or queens. Clustering gracefully about her stair railing and adorning her tall and elegant king bed, her quilt choices tell me Barbara is an unrepentant traditionalist. Truly, it must be a Herculean task to stipple these large masterpieces all done on her Janome Memory Craft Nile green foliages, butternut squashes, walnut seed pods and pumpkin florals flourish upon sepia-toned layers. My favorite fabric featured subtle black needles and thread skipping directionally through a soft and creamy background. Vintage speaks loud and clear here. As a historical footnote, Barbara recounted her roots. All four grandparents hail from the Madeira Islands far below the southern coast of Portugal. A certain phenomenal cutwork embroidery usually featured in table linens originated there. Barbara's maternal grandmother was an expert cutwork embroiderer. Well, this lady had emigrated from Madeira, Portugal on the sister ship to the Titanic (possibly the Lusitania prior to 1915) and was processed through Ellis Island. Barbara's personal mastery is evident, too, in several framed embroidered pieces. When she visited Madeira, she purchased an elegantly cross-stitched Portuguese girl dressed in traditional costume. This masterpiece graces her entry. Not by accident, Barbara comes by her craft with a savior faire gleaned from oil painting. Possessing natural talent, she has taken many classes on tole painting and drawing techniques. Geese and song birds are her favorite painted subjects. At age 7, Barbara won an Oakland Tribune contest for her drawing. Her winning entry was published in their paper. She is energized and assertive in her approach to quilting, exclaiming: I don't like to work fast anymore. I just don't take pride in that. Barbara gives herself permission to proceed purposefully and methodically. I like to pick out my own fabrics, not choosing ready-to-go kits and packets. And, she prefers autonomy, eschewing for now, mini group affiliation. Her schedule, which includes care-taking for her elderly mother in Oakley, Ca, precludes further involvement. A 21 year old son and a car-guy husband fill out the rest of her free time. Her quilting future looks very bright. Barbara promises to pursue, with her exceptional drawing abilities, designing her own Baltimore-esque motifs. You go, girl Jeanie Ferguson Patchwork Star Reporter

The Pine Needle Press Page 5 We re delighted to welcome our new Junior members Thanks, too, to their mentors who will help the girls develop their quilting skills 1. Meredith Cooper, Butterfly Drive, Nevada City, 95959, , bd: Sept. 17. No . Meredith's mentor is: Barbara Laplante. 2. Miranda Williams, Combie Road, Auburn, 95602, , bd: April tuttifrutty2009@live.com. Mentor is Judy Vaughn. 3. Katie Davidson, Pawnee Trail, Nevada City, 95959, , bd: April Alwayskatieiamshe@gmail.com. Mentor is Sherry Hall. Education Outreach I finished the school year in April completing projects in 4 third grade classrooms. My volunteers and I started the year off in November with our holiday project, Snowman Pillows. Then we had a short break and worked at Scotten School making Valentine's Day and Mother's Day Pillows. We worked with approximately 90 students in total. Everything went smoothly, well almost. I learned that hand sewing fused batiks was not that easy. The kids did great though. Believe it or not I even had some students ask me what an iron was It can get hectic and noisy working with a group of eight to nine year old students but we always have fun. I would like to give a great BIG thanks to the women who volunteered to help me, I couldn't do it without them. So THANK YOU, Karen Mitchell, Susan Hopkins, Mary Ross, Alice Ruth Mischke, Ruth Bertaccini, Bev Merritt, Tamara, Molly and Heidi Cook. Special thanks to LaVeta Nevius for cutting all the fabric for me. Fall will soon be here and we'll be back in school again It really is fun sewing with the kids, passing on our love of sewing to future generations. If any members want to get involved in this endeavor just give me a call. It doesn't require a lot, just a little time and patience. Come on, Ladies, join the fun I hope everyone had a Happy & Cool Summer Robin Mello, Education Outreach, Affiliate of the Month Fat Lady Singing It s not over til the fat lady sings and the binding is on your quilt. 6 The Pine Needle Press Page 6 The Draft Horse Classic will be here before we know it. This has been a great venue for our opportunity quilt ticket sales. We still have openings for both Saturday and Sunday, September 20 and 21st. Additionally, we will have a large space to display our quilt this year at the Draft Horse Classic. We would like to fill the space and showcase what our guild is about. We are looking for quilts with a horse theme, country theme, etc. This includes Jr. Quilters. Please contact Sharon Alves at lvtoquilt@gmail.com if you can spare a little bit of time to help with the ticket sales or if you have a quilt that we could use in our display. Thank you in advance for all of your assistance in making this a successful event. Mini Group Helping Fund Cancer Research. I am very proud to be part of The Busy Bees Mini Group With their help and support I was able to organize and piece a quilt to be raffled to raise money for GIST Cancer Research. Each of our members played a critical role of bringing this to completion. I want to thank Dorothy Fowler for quilting it on her long arm that definitely helped it win 2 ribbons. The 3rd place ribbon at our own quilt show and it also earned a 2nd place ribbon at the Nevada County Fair. The quilt will be raffled on October 5, 2014 in Congers New York at our GIST Walk for a Cure. So far we have raised $3200, of which 100 percent goes to cancer research. The specific cancer is GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumor) which is an orphan cancer. Some of you know that my husband has been fighting this cancer for almost 7 years, and he is still able to fight this rare cancer because of the researchers and the work they do. Everyone will have one last chance to buy tickets, 1 for $5 and 3 for $10, at the September meeting of the PTQG when it will be on display and my husband and I will be selling tickets. The raffle is through a 501c3 nonprofit organization and contributions are tax deductible. Many thanks to Marilyn Engelking, Mary Crane, Anne Wilson, Dorothy Fowler, Shirley Davis, Bobby Boucher, Carol Gates and Judy Johnston for helping with this wonderful project. Cheryl Klein, a very proud Busy Bee Sharon Alves

The Pine Needle Press Page 8 Golden Girls, Phyllis Brodie, Neova Barnes, Rose Thompson and Carol Gates are all smiles after the ceremony inducting Rose into the Nevada County Fair Hall of Fame. Our own, Rose Thompson, was honored as one of this year s Nevada County Fair Hall of Fame inductees. Along with two others, she was named for her active participation in the fair over the past 44 years. She worked as an exhibitor, employee and volunteer. Before moving here in 1970, she had never been to a Fair She volunteered that first year and, as they say, the rest is history. She has worked every fair for the last 44 years. For many years she was in charge of setting up the exhibit buildings and with her Dad by her side would spend the summer preparing all of the buildings for the Fair exhibits. She also worked as a receptionist in the front office. She helped with the Fiber and Textile exhibit, the Harvest Fair at the Draft Horse Classic, and the Gingerbread House competition at the Country Christmas Faire. For 22 of those 44 years,, she also worked for the Nevada County School District as a teacher s aide and an administrative assistant to the Superintendent. A member of both the Pioneer Arts Club and the Pine Tree Quilt Guild, she always has a project going Rose was stunned and overwhelmed by her nomination into the Hall of Fame. She said it s the people who have made her experience at the Fair so memorable and who keep her returning year after year. Information for this article was taken from the press release issued by the Fair office on July 28th, 2014.

The Pine Needle Press Page 9 Home Workshop Looking back to the June Home Workshop we want to THANK Lettie Lewis for teaching us the "1600 Quilt". Everyone had such a good time It was so exciting to see all the different colored quilts being made. Hopefully we'll see some of those quilts in "SHOW and TELL" and in our QUILT SHOW in May Looking forward to the rest of the year, we have three exciting classes planned for September, October and November. I know you have all seen and admired the work of the Cook family. This month, September18th, Molly Cook will be showing us how to do Foundation Piecing, both on paper and fabric. 10 The Pine Needle Press Page 10 Community Service and Drop In and Sew In August we will meet on the third Thursday, August 21, 9:00 3:00, Seventh Day Adventist Church, Osborne Hill Road, Grass Valley. Kathy Biggi and Pat Fryer have new kits made up. NEW CS/DIS PROJECTS A special request came from Nevada County Child Protective Services (CPS), for 15 20, small blankets (no batt), slightly larger than receiving size (30 square). The Public Health Nurses often meet with children who are experiencing very stressful life situations. The quilts will be used to hold and comfort the children during the home visitations and given to the children at the end of the visit. Twelve (12) kits were given out at the annual picnic and an additional eight kits were quickly made up. We may be getting more CPS requests and your support will be important. These are very simple front and back, no batt, and can be enveloped or do a simple stitch to hold the two layers together and add binding. Stay tuned... Another new project is patchwork quilt backs any size block, strip, or combination - that we can use for Community Service quilts. What a way to use up your remnant pieces and make room for new fabric Simply sew up the pieces, scrappy works well, to a size for baby, twin, double, queen/king and we can use it. No remnants? Check out a patchwork quilt back kit at the September guild meeting and work on it in between your other projects. A suggestion was made to include pillow cases for children s quilts and bibs to go with baby quilts. We do not have kits for these but we do have pillow case patterns (or you can use your favorite or check on-line for one). As always, we can use your help to make quilt back kits and finish quilts of all sizes quilting or binding. Nothing fancy required, a great way to practice your free motion quilting or stitch in the ditch, sew from corner to corner, stipple, meander, whatever you want to try. Bring your machine and spend some time with us doing what you love quilting No need to bring supplies if you need it we have it Chocolate, homemade cookies, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and lots of fun and laughter keeps your energy up. Do bring a lunch if you are staying all day. If you cannot attend CS but would like to help, please contact Marjorie. Remember: if you know anyone who needs a quilt we distribute throughout the year, CS quilts are not only made for the December distribution. Community Services continues to make good use of your donations of scrap batting, thread, plastic zipper bags, and fabric. All of these items go into making or storing quilts. Marjorie McConnell 2014 Community Service Dates August 21 September 18 October 16 November 20 December NO MEETING Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, 2014 Holiday Party SAVE THE DATE The annual Holiday Party will be held on Tuesday, December 2, The elves are busy and want you to know about two of the prizes that will be awarded. We are hosting a personal hygiene campaign for Utah s Place a twist on the canned food drive. Donations of small, travel size soap, shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes for their clients will be accepted. If you are traveling this summer and have extra items you do not use, please bring them back and donate them. If you are not traveling, and want to contribute, travel size items can be found at most drug stores or at the Dollar stores. Each contributing member will receive a ticket for a special gift basket.
