1 January 2016 Newsletter Star Quilters Guild of the Roanoke, Virginia area Dear Members, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! Are you ready to start new projects? This is going to be an exciting year for all of us -- lots of workshops and great programs planned for the next several months. Winter has not hit us yet, so you have time to get your supplies ready for those snowy days when you can t get out or don t want to venture out to the quilt shops. This was the first time in 20 years we closed our business for the week between Christmas and New Year. (I am going to be like the school students -- I don t want to go back to work.) I spent the time trying to organizing my sewing room and discover what all I have. Of course there is that one piece of fabric I need to go with a project. My goal this year is to try and keep projects organized as I work on them. I am not one to clean up my piles, so I am going to try and do better in What are your goals? Happy Quilting! Ann, Your President IMPROV ROUND ROBIN WORKSHOP SATURDAY, JANUARY 9th, 9 AM TO 4 PM This fun workshop will take place in the place we usually have our meetings. You will need a sewing machine, the usual tools, and 3 yards of large scraps, a yard of "signature" fabric, and two or three selvage-to-selvage cuts of 1/4 to 1/2 yard. Complete details are in the December newsletter, available for download at newsletter-sqg/ If you'd like to join the members who have already signed up for this free workshop, talk to Kitty. Call her at or her at kittydelapp1@mac.com. Things to bring to Monday's meeting: (1.) Last-minute donations for the auction. (Bring them as early as you can!) (2.) Cash or check to pay for your purchases. (3.) Your BLUE crazy quilt block for the drawing. (4.) Something for your Secret Quilt Pal. (5.) Your name tag.
2 OUR JANUARY PROGRAM Monday, January 11th at 7 o'clock: SILENT AUCTION Are you all ready to shop?? Bring some money and enthusiasm to the January meeting as we will have our annual Silent Auction. We all love to get bargains, or maybe you can buy "a new technique to try" for not as much as you would have to pay at a store. There are some very good, new or likenew objects -- a rolling tote!, thread holders, rulers and templates; also lots of great patterns, yardage, and pre-cuts; plus "just can't do without" sewing/quilting notions and supplies. Even a few "unusual" things!! It's fun to bid (and maybe really hope you get it!), and the money raised goes into our budget to help finance great programs. Here are a few "rules" for the evening: *As you come to the meeting - register your name and get your number card. You will bid with that number. *Bidding begins as soon as the displays are set up and continues until 7:15. Then we will have a business meeting, a short break for more bidding, and end with Show and Tell. *For each item, there will be listed a minimum bid. Please honor that and bid in $1.00 increments. *Some items will be bundled together. Please do not switch items around. You can try to exchange with the winner if you really need something from another bundle. *When you are paying for your winning items -- please make sure you have enough to pay -- I know I would probably forget about an IOU, so we'll accept checks and cash. We will give you a receipt at the end. I still need two more people to work the "cash out" table. Call me at : A new year bringing with it good quilting fun. -- Cindy King Planning for Our Next Quilt Show On Thursday, January 7, 2016, there will be a Quilt Show budget meeting at 6:30 at Creative Quilting Connection on Starkey Road in Roanoke County Officers and Committee Chairs President... 3 BAREFOOT QUILTESSAS The Barefoot Quiltessas, a group of Guild members who meet each month to make comfort quilts, shelter quilts, and veteran's quilts, have a different time for this month's meeting. They will meet at the usual place, Our Lady of Nazareth Church, 2505 Electric Road, SW, in Roanoke County, from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM on Friday, January 15th. Bring a sewing machine and the usual tools. Also, the Quiltessas always try to bring a nonperishable item to donate to the food pantry for those in need. Judy Bradley writes, "We will work on twin quilts for the Women's Shelter for those who wish to do so. I know this is the day right before a Comfort Quilt workshop. I hope you all don't OD on quilting. But is there ever too much quilting? Hope to see you all on the 15th!" Betty Ann Tyree, always upbeat, notes that we can load our cars for the Quiltessas on Friday and then leave everything in them ready for Saturday's quilting! SATURDAY SEWING: A Comfort Quilt Workshop On Saturday, January 16, from 9 to 3, we will have a Comfort Quilt workshop at our regular meeting place. Bring your sewing machine, the tools of the trade, and a lunch for yourself. If you are already working on a quilt to donate, you can bring that, but there will be fabric kits for people ready to start something new. Let's see whether we can make 2016 the year that we beat the fantastic 2015 record of 158 quilts for those in special need of comforting. -- Judy Bradley Busy Hands This group meets at Starbucks inside Barnes & Noble at Tanglewood Mall each 3rd Monday at 6:30 PM for about 90 minutes. This month, that is January 18th. Bring any sort of handwork and join us. If you're not doing handwork, feel free to come anyway! -- Ann Ware Can You Help? The Ways and Means committee is again in need of donations of fabric, patterns, quilt magazines, and books about quilting or sewing. These items are sold to raise money to buy supplies to make Comfort Quilts. Lost and Found Several serving spoons, potholders, bowls, and a knife were left at the church after our Christmas Social. Please see me at the January meeting if you are missing yours. Otherwise, I will donate them to the church kitchen for their use. -- Ann Ware Barbara Turner's Neat Idea I have a suggestion concerning the crazy quilt block challenge. I made six of the blue crazy quilt blocks. One I'll submit for the challenge, but I found the extra blocks make great mug rugs. page 3
4 Minutes of the Star Quilters Meeting on December 7, 2015 The room was set up beautifully with place settings and clever seasonal decorations. And, tables for the food! The evening began at 6:05 pm when Becky Kea told everyone to come up front and choose a Membership Gift for themselves. The gift was a practical and beautifully made carrier for your rotary cutter and/or scissors, both as storage and for those workshop occasions (see later in the minutes). At 6:07, President Ann Ware called the group to order. Ginny Vaden asked the blessing on the food and festivities, and the feasting began (in an orderly manner, of course). At 6:55, Ann Ware gave everyone a sheet of paper which is a paper piecing pattern for a four (4) month project. Each month, Ann will draw a color from a bag and everyone will make their 8.5" block using that color, and/or a contrasting color for interest. Each month when we bring our blocks back to the meeting, there will be a drawing for all of the blocks. Be sure to make 3 more copies of the pattern so you can participate each month. This month s color is BLUE. Betty Ann Tyree took the floor and thanked everyone who turned out last Friday; she said we made a total of 4 quilt tops and gave special thanks to Pat Hewitt who cuts and marks all those snowball squares without complaint. Ethel Simmons then took the floor and gave out an award to Teresa Fletcher for making the most comfort quilts during the year; Teresa made 33 quilts. Ethel also said we made a total of 158 comfort quilts this year -- an all-time record. Way to go, ladies. Ann Ware said that January will be very busy. On Saturday the 16th there will be another Comfort Quilt workshop at our regular meeting place; bring your sewing machine, your lunch and be ready to sew. On the second Saturday, Kitty Delapp will also be doing an Improv Round Robin workshop. The Starry Eyed Quilters invite all Guild members to an Improv Round Robin on Saturday, January 9, We will meet from 9 AM to 4 PM, with a bring-your-own-lunch break, in our usual meeting room, the Fellowship Hall at Christ Lutheran Church, 2011 Brandon Avenue, Roanoke. Kitty guarantees that every quilt will be entirely unique. See the December newsletter for further details. Be sure to Kitty to save a spot. Ann Ware said that at 6:30 on the evening of Thursday January 7th there will be a Quilt Show Budget meeting. Anyone who would like to be a part of that budget meeting is invited to attend. She also reminded the Secret Quilting Pal participants to be sure to pick up anything for them on the table. page 4
5 Ann went on to thank the Hospitality Committee and Gisela O Connor who came up with the idea for making the Membership Gifts. Becky Kea then said to turn over your placemat and each number would represent a table gift: #1 was a snowman; #2 was a tree; #3 was a tree; #4 was a tree; #5 was a snowman and #6 was a snowman. In addition, door prizes were given out to randomly drawn names. Next was the gift exchange. All those participating (and there were a LOT) formed a circle at the head of the room and when the music started, each gift was passed to the right until the music stopped. The passing was repeated again until it was certain that everyone had a gift they had not brung. Becky Kea told us each to take the Christmas poem on our place setting as it pertains to quilters. Next was Show and Tell, and as always there were some beautiful quilting and/or art projects shown. Ann reminded us that the next meeting will be on the Second Monday in January. She thanked us all for coming and wished us a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. The gathering was dismissed at 7:35 pm (and seemed to reconvene at JoAnn s). Respectfully submitted, Loretta Twiford, Secretary UPCOMING PROGRAMS Our hard-working Program Chair, Tam McBride, has a stellar line-up to start the new year. January 11, 7:00 p.m. Silent Auction.
