1 starquiltersguild.com From the President Dear Members, Only 20 some more days till Spring. Hope Everyone is enjoying this nice winter staying warm and safe. It is a good time to finish up those quilts for the Quilt Show. There are several nice Quilt Shows to attend in the next couple of months. Get together with a girlfriend or two and try to check them out. Several of us are putting together a few new challenges for the membership this year. If you should have any special interest on a new project please let me know. Once the Quilt Show is over we all will be ready to go on to another adventure. You all know me I can not sit back and relax. Stay safe and warm Ann Ware, President Notice to Board Members There will be a Board Meeting on March 19th at Creative Quilting Connection starting at 6:30. At this meeting the board will be preparing the budget for the next fiscal year, starting May If anyone has a suggestion or question, please let me know before the meeting. -- Ann Ware, President March 2015 Newsletter Star Quilters Guild Roanoke, Virginia Quilt Show logo by Ashley Kuhlman Our Very Own Quilt Show: Vintage to Modern is just 2 months away! Friday, May am to 6 pm Saturday, May am to 5 pm at Berglund Center Exhibit Hall (formerly Roanoke Civic Center), 710 Williamson Road, in Roanoke. This is a judged quilt show that will include a Viewers Choice Award, Featured Artist Nancy Chu Farris, Door Prizes, a Bed Turning, Vendors, and over 150 Quilts on display, including the Star Quilters Guild Challenge quilts. Admission: $7.00 daily (children 12 & under free) WE NEED YOU! At the March and April meetings you will have the opportunity to sign up as a volunteer for the upcoming quilt show. Please join in the fun and share your love of quilting with others for as many hours as you can spare. There are many roles necessary for a successful show, whether you are shy, outgoing, relaxed, or a bundle of energy. It's Time to Renew Your Membership! It s time to renew your membership to the Star Quilters Guild. Dues for May 1, 2015, through April 30, 2016, are $20. Please bring your $20 check made to Star Quilters Guild, or the correct change, along with a completed membership form (find at to either the March or April meeting. These forms will also be available at the welcome table for those without internet access or for your convenience. Joining the guild, of course, is open anytime of the year, so please encourage your quilting or pre-quilting friends to visit any meeting or activity. Checks and forms may also be mailed to me at the following address: Judy Coffman, 2525 Tillett Road SW, Roanoke, VA Judy Coffman, Membership OUR MARCH PROGRAM -- THE HATS OF DOWNTON ABBEY March 2 at 7 p.m. So many people love the series Downton Abbey and its fashions that you may want to bring a guest or two with you for this program on Downton Abbey Hats. Lois Atkins with the Roanoke Chapter of the American Sewing Guild will show a collection of Downton Abbey hats as well as demonstrate the construction procedures using the vintage patters. Trinity Schoolhouse Fabrics will offer for sale some of the Andover fabrics. There will be door prizes, too! -- Tam McBride, Program Chairman Our ART VENTURE activity for kids at the Taubman Museum Cathy Russell asks that anyone with extra scrap book paper bring it to the next monthly meeting. We need it for our "kids day out" at the Taubman. Our group is in charge of the Art Venture Activity for children at the Taubman Museum in downtown Roanoke on Saturday, April 18, from 10:00 until 5:00. We will explain about quilts and have the children make their own designs by pasting construction-paper shapes and scrapbooking-paper shapes on plain paper. Bring the paper to the March meeting so it can be prepared. If someone has a cricket (a Cricut shape-cutting machine), please bring it. We could make short work of cutting shapes. 3 Important Reminders Read the Show Guide carefully for complete news of the show. However, the following are important reminders. Challenge Blocks: Pick up your 10 inch square of fabric from Ethel or Judy. Make any block design using it and other (coordinating) fabrics. The final size of your block should be 12 ½ square unfinished. There will be a drawing after the show two drawings if enough blocks are made. Entries for the first drawing come from the block makers. 1 block = 1 entry. 2 blocks = 2 entries, etc. Entries for the second drawing come from the show volunteers. 4 hours = 1 entry. Challenge Quilts: As in past years, these will be judged at the guild meeting before the show which will be the April meeting. So have your Challenge finished by April 6 but be sure to get your registration in to Tam by March 20. Door Prizes: Laurie is hoping for 100 prizes each day charm packs, jelly rolls, fat quarters, patterns, etc. So look through your stash for those items you don t remember why you bought or you know you will never use. Think: What would I enjoy winning? Registrations: Again, your quilt doesn t need to have that binding on and the sleeve attached until the last minute -- April 29 but the registration needs to be sent or given to Tam by March 20. The registration form can be found on the web site, in the Show Guide, at quilt shops, and on the membership table at the March meeting. Sponsorships: Sponsorships are an inexpensive way for individuals, organizations, and businesses to advertise themselves and support the guild show at the same time. Sponsors will be listed in the program and advertised on a meter board done by Hollins Expo. Forms can be found on the web site, in the Show Guide and on the membership table at the guild meeting. The deadline is April 1. Who do you know who would like to support the show and advertise at the same time? -- Elsie Bailey Ways and Means Spring Cleaning? Believe it or not, Vickie Kuhlman of the Ways and Means Committee says she needs more used quilting magazines. These and other donated items are sold to members to raise money to buy material to make comfort quilts for charity. *i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i* Starry Eyed Quilters The next meetup will be at 7:00 PM, March 30. Work in Progress: Show n Tell of self-portraits and other projects. Call or me for the location. The Self Portrait challenge is due at our April get together; plan to enter it in our show in the Art Quilt category. -- Susan Kraterfield *i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i*i**i*i* Comfort Quilts Judy Bradley reports that a quilt was delivered to the Veterans Hospital in Salem. Pick up pre-cut fabric and batting at the March meeting so you too can make a comfort quilt for the VA, Salvation Army, or other local group. It's easy! Busy Hands The Busy Hands group meets at Starbucks inside Barnes & Noble Bookstore at Tanglewood Mall on the 3rd Monday of each month at 6:30 PM. We meet for about 1-1½ hours. Bring your supplies and any sort of handwork, and come join us. We will enjoy sharing our work and maybe a cup of coffee or two. Not working on a project, come anyway. Questions? Phone or Ann Ware.

4 Library News from Barbara Turner Something old is something new, but not borrowed and not blue. Some new materials were donated to our library. Here is an overview of two of the items. Take a look, you might be inspired: GARDEN GATE THREADS from Need l Love offered a mix of quilts, rug hooking, pillows, yo-yo projects, charm necklace, wool projects, tote bag and pincushion. It has printed pattern inserts (please copy and leave them for the next person, if you use them.) DESIGNS WITH LINES with Pam Clarke is a DVD and workbooks for quilting designs and free motion quilting. Is this the year you decide to drop the feed-dogs and let your imagination soar? Check it out > The Guild Library is stored in 2 cabinets in the cloakroom off the hallway near our meeting room. Come early to next month's meeting so you can browse through the books and DVDs and borrow some to take home. What is a Charm Quilt? February's Show and Tell featured some particularly beautiful quilts in a variety of styles, including "Good Will Hunting," which Sarah Baumgardner made using pieces of sweaters from Goodwill and other thrift shops, a Zantangle quilt block, Donna Kittleson's wedding quilt with signatures from the guests, and several others that showed hard work and dazzling skill. Claire Hightower displayed a charm quilt. A charm quilt is a pieced quilt in which every piece comes from a different fabric. They are fun to make, but naturally a bit hodge-podgy. Claire showed an artist's eye in putting the pieces together so that they blended with each other to make a pleasing whole. -- Laura Perry Current Exhibits at the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg, Virginia Jinny Beyer's "Simple Stitches, Exquisite Quilts" "Art Quilts Inspired by Guatemalan Weavings" "The Stornetta Legacy" Because of the weather, "Meet The Artists" reception and Jinny Beyer's "Designing Fabric: From Inspiration to Final Yards" will take place on Sunday, March 1st. More details at Quilt Events in March at the Alexander Black House and Cultural Center Through March 27 Keeping the Piece: Quilting Culture in Southwest Virginia : Come see how quilting has evolved into a very unique art form at this exhibition of regional quilts, both historic and modern. Through March 27 9 Yards of Beach : In this exhibition, local artist Susan Hensley departs from her two-dimensional work to create an audiovisual experience built around photographs taken on the beaches of California. (Reception March 4.) March 19 Quilt Documentation Project of Southwest Virginia : 7:30 pm. Quilt historian and appraiser Neva Hart will present a free lecture on her project documenting quilts of Southwest Virginia. We Need Door Prizes for the Quilt Show Laurie Lyons is hoping for 100 prizes each day - charm packs, jelly rolls, fat quarters, patterns, etc. Please take a look through your stash for items you can contribute. FOR SALE: Computerized Sewing Machine Guild member Carol Sheldon writes that she has a Husquvarna Platinum 750 for sale for $600. (Or make an offer.) It has been used very little and comes with a carrying case, a hard cover, and an assortment of supplies. Phone or Carol at the addresses in the Member Directory.

Report on February's Meeting Marietta Price and her daughter Tiara Clark of Bargain Barn Fabrics in Montvale gave an informative presentation on Imagery on Fabric. Marietta displayed her gorgeous Quilt of Valor, which was commissioned by the D-Day Memorial. It incorporated a World War II veteran's photographs and memories. One of Marietta's students displayed a quilt of her own design, featuring Scottish history and heritage. It will be seen by thousands of people at a "gathering of the clans" in Florida. Bargain Barn Fabrics offers not only fabrics but also Saturday classes in painting on fabric, dyeing fabric, and other methods of making a unique quilt. If you do not have a computer, it's worth stopping by a public library and asking them to help you to see the site. Ask them to show you how to use the clicker to enlarge the photos, too. You can learn so much from looking at other people's quilts -- and with a computer, you can look long and hard!
