Please sign up at the May meeting if you are planning to join the fun and indicate whether you are able to drive. Let's have a good time! Things you may want to bring to Monday's meeting: (1) A dessert or buffet-type dish. (2) Finished comfort quilts and finished comfort quilt blocks. (3) Something for your Secret Quilt Pal. Barefoot Quiltessas You are invited to join the quiltessas in making comfort quilts every first Friday at Our Lady of Nazareth Church, 2505 Electric Road, SW, from 10 AM to 3 PM. Don't forget your sack lunch and a nonperishable item for the food pantry. As this newsletter goes to press, we are still eagerly waiting to see ourselves on television. We were filmed when we delivered quilts to the Turning Point shelter for victims of domestic violence. Membership dues are payable by May 1st for the Star Quilters Guild fiscal year (May 1, 2016, through April 30, 2017). Please bring a $20 check made payable to Star Quilters Guild to the May meeting. Linda and I attended a foil-and-glitter workshop in Hampton and have lots of beading ideas (and beads). Plus, it should be a good time to see iris in bloom in the garden and chat over lunch. Please bring * A dish to share for lunch * Several scraps of fabric to work on -- size at least 4 x 4 inches. Fabric with a strong graphic and/or bright colors seems to work well (think Kaye Fassett), but probably any bold floral or print would be fine. Other ideas Glitter or foil used for accents in pictoral quilts with ice, snow, water, Chihuly glass, etc... * Your own glitter, beads, or foil if you want -- but Linda and I have lots. * A fine-pointed paint brush that you don't mind dipping in glue. The glue is water-soluble but I would not waste a good brush on this. * Thread/fabric Scissors * Reading glasses (at least I'll need them!) Beading needles have very small eyes! We'll provide * Soda (regular and diet), coffee and tea * Glitter, foil, mirror circles, beads, thread, beading needles, beading thread * Lots of flowers in the garden for artistic inspiration. Some people have expressed interest in carpooling since we are a ways out. You'll have to organize that for yourselves! We do have plenty of parking and everything is handicapped-accessible. All guild members are welcome -- but please let us know if you are coming so that we can have an idea of how many to expect. See you soon! 4 Minutes of the Star Quilters Meeting on April 4, 2016 The meeting was called to order by President, Ann Ware at 7:02 pm. Ann stated that first would be the program, then a short business meeting and then Show and Tell. The meeting was turned over to Program Chair Tam McBride, who introduced tonight s speaker, Jerry Whitt of Creative Stitches (Quilted Expressions) in Lynchburg, who spoke on "The Care and Maintenance of Our Machines." Mr. Whitt handed out a paper outlining the points of his talk. During the course of his presentation, he spoke of several favorites of his, like Organ sewing machine needles, which has been in business in Japan since 1920 and began exporting sewing machine needles to the USA in Another favorite for cleaning machines is a solvent called Goo Gone which can be purchased at places like WalMart, Amazon.com, and Home Depot in a spray bottle for a reasonable price. Another favorite is Aurifil (cotton) thread for piecing and Isacord (poly) for everything else. Mr. Whitt spoke and answered questions until 8:00 pm when President Ann Ware conducted a short business meeting. OLD BUSINESS If you are not getting your newsletter, let Laura Perry know. Treasurer - Susan Kraterfield gave the bank balance, and said the amount was due largely to the annual membership renewal fees. Comfort Quilts - Ann Ware said she wanted to thank each and every member who contributed time and talent toward the making of the many comfort quilts which were distributed last Friday. Be sure to check the Star Quilters FaceBook page for pictures. Ethel Simmons reported 4 comfort quilts and 2 soldier quilts turned in tonight. Membership - Judy Coffman reported 6 visitors tonight, which she introduced, one new member, and 63 members present. She went on to say if you have not yet renewed your membership, please mail it to Star Quilters, P. O. Box 4328, Roanoke, VA Sunshine - reportedly all are well. Ways and Means - Vickie Kuhlman reported a total of $55.10 tonight. A name was drawn for the 18 purple paper-pieced squares, and the winner was Bobbie Badger. Congratulations! Hospitality - Becky Kea spoke regarding the May Social on May 2nd at 6:00 pm. If your last name begins with A thru H, please bring dessert; if your last name begins with I thru Z, please bring finger foods. Becky then passed out invitations. Ann Ware stated that last month, a slate of officers was presented for the new term and page 4

5 according to the By-Laws, we are to vote tonight. The slate is: Cathy Russell, President; Susan Kraterfield, Vice President; Sue Berry, Treasurer; and Claire Hightower, Secretary. Is there a motion to accept the slate? Barbara Badger moved to accept the slate as presented and Becky Kea seconded the motion. By a show of hands, it was approved. (Wait, did you see Cathy Russell raise her hand as opposed?) NEW BUSINESS Sue Berry took the floor and asked if anyone had a prior obligation that had to be met on May 14th. As it turned out, no one present was going to attend VA Tech graduation on that date, nor would anyone present be attending a school prom on that date. Good, she said, then you will be free to attend the Floyd Quilt Show! The show committee said they would need 300 people each day of the show and Sue was counting on her friends at Star Quilters to be among those 300 per day visitors. If you plan to enter a quilt, the registrations need to be in by April 23. You can print a copy of the registration form from their website, Cathy Russell then told of upcoming plans for a quilt shop tour on June 4th (did I hear Fairfield, Staunton and Dayton mentioned?), a pending trip to West Virginia, and on June 25th a Comfort Quilts Retreat. She said Laura would put the information in the newsletter. Sallie Powers informed us that the Salem Fair will be held From June 27th thru July 10th so keep those dates open for helping out. She also said that this Friday and Saturday, April 9th and 10th there will be an Elsie Bailey fabric sale at Sallie s house. Come prepared to buy! Ann then stated that the Quilt Show Planning Committee will meet at Creative Quilting Connection on Monday evening, April 11th, and all members are invited to attend and participate. There will also be a Board Meeting on Monday evening, April 25th at Creative Quilting Connection; the new Board members are welcome to attend, as well as all others interested. It was then time for Show & Tell, which was well represented and was a fine display of our many talented members. After Show & Tell Ann brought forth a quilt top which had been donated to Ways & Means and it was auctioned off. Kitty DeLapp was sure she had it for $20 when a higher bid was shouted out. Ooops. The bidding continued and the quilt top was finally sold to Kitty for $30. There was a move and second to adjourn the meeting at 8:25 pm. Respectfully submitted, Loretta Twiford, Secretary Floyd Quilt Show is this month! The Floyd Quilt Guild will present its Quilt Show at a new location this year. The show will be held at the Floyd EcoVillage, 188 Eco Village Trail SE, in Floyd. Hours are 9 to 4 on Friday, May 13th, and Saturday, May 14th. Admission is $5 daily. The 2014 show will be judged by Paula Golden, an award-winning quilt artist and certified judge. Demonstrations of various quilting techniques, some old, some new, will take place throughout the show. Hand-crafted items, gentlyused books, magazines, notions, and fabric will be for sale. Experienced personnel from the Alpine Sewing Machine Company will be available to answer questions throughout the weekend. Visit their booth at the show to try out a variety of machines. 6 Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg, Virginia Saturday April 30 from 2 to 4: The artists of "Three Decades of a Quilting Friendship" will be there and give a behind-the-scenes tour of the exhibit. Admission free with museum membership or admission ticket. The Museum will be closed May for exhibit changes. See the museum's website at for information about upcoming programs. Have You Got TMF (Too Much Fabric)? We can help with that! The Ways and Means committee is happy to get your donations of fabric, patterns, quilt magazines, and books about quilting or sewing. These items are sold to raise money to buy supplies to support Guild programs, including comfort quilts, workshops, and presentations. New River Valley Fiber Groups Potluck June 7, 2016 The Quilting Party cordially invites you and your fiber art friends to a Summer Potluck. There will be a Silent Auction, friendship, networking, and good food -and in the true The Quilting Party tradition, chocolate!
