Daylight Savings Time Crafts-September 21 1 p.m. Place TBA State Workshop-October 8, Cheyenne, Wyoming-More details later. Hope many of you can plan to attend, so mark your calendar. Let s really represent X-JWC! Tidbits From the Past Ruth and Becky Gehrke, as presidents, raised over $5,000 which was used for the United Medical Center s home away from home at the old DePaul building. The club also donated a display case to the Transportation Museum for old Costumes and supported Safehouse, Attention Homes and canned goods for Needs. We Support Our Members *We lost Jean Rucker in June. Our thoughts are with Bob and family! *Our thoughts are with Karen Lee and her family in the recent loss of her Mother! *Sympathy is extended to Sharon Schmidl in the loss of her sister in June!

2 *Jan Cline had the misfortune to break her ankle and has been recuperating all summer. *Fran Fooks had some shoulder repair work done and she is coming along fine. *Bev Rogers fell and broke her knee cap. (Ouch) We wish you a speedy recovery! *Beth Schieck celebrated her 97 th birthday August 20. Happy Birthday Beth! *Norine and Sam Samuelson celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary August 21 st. Congratulations Norine and Sam! New member: Elaine Lucas Ways and Means Fundraiser A very successful Garage Sale was held Saturday July 9 at Carolyn Turbiville s Garage. The sale was co-chaired by Carolyn Turbiville and Karen Lee with help from 24 members on Friday and Saturday. Twenty two members and one nonmembers donated items. We received $700 in money donations and $1180 on actual sale making a total of $1880. Karen and Carolyn put in many hours Sunday-Friday pricing items and finally called in troops (members) to help price on Thursday. This all helped with expediting set up on Friday Your elected X-JWC Officers for President-Julia Ortner President-Elect-Benita Thompson 2nd Vice President-Trish Peoples Treasurer-Mary Ann Kamla Secretary-Karen Schroeder Director of Membership-Kathy Petersen Many X-JWC members are represented on State GFWC board Home Life Chairman-Phyllis Salzburg International Outreach Chairman-Trish Peoples Public Issues Chairman-Karen Lee Leadership Chairman-Carolyn Turbiville Legislation and Public Policy Chairman-Kathleen Petersen Endowment Chairman-Many Ann Kamla District Liaison-Sarah Norris Parliamentary Advisor-Patty Benskin

3 Phyllis Salzburg is representing X-JWC on the International Board of Directors as a member of the Bylaws Committee for Leadership from State Leadership Chairman Carolyn Turbiville Remember: There is no I in teamwork, so make our organization a WE group. Not one person should be trying to do all the work, make sure all of your committee is involved. (Members, make sure you step up to help if you have volunteered to do something, so that it can be a WE organization). A good leader involves everyone in decisions! KING SOOPERS NEIGHBORHOOD REWARDS CARD UPDATE $947.20!! Since we enrolled in the King Soopers Neighborhood Reward Program less than a year ago that is the amount X-JWC has received from King Soopers to be used for our club programs and projects! The easiest fund raiser ever nothing extra to buy, no volunteering just shopping at King Soopers, including their fuel centers, and affiliated stores (City Market, Loaf & Jug fuel centers, Fry s, and others). The club receives 5% of funds loaded on the cards of our participating members after we reach $5000, not when cards are actually used for purchases. Friends, spouses, neighbors, relatives can also support our projects with an X-JWC Neighborhood Rewards card. See Phyllis Salzburg for more information or to order a card. How does it work? Order a card from Phyllis Salzburg for $10. When the card arrives it will have your $10 loaded on it. Although it looks like a gift card, you cannot buy the Rewards card at the store it must be ordered through the club. When you receive your card, load money in any amount on the card at the register BEFORE groceries are rung. Give the cashier your regular King Soopers membership card if you have one (you ll get credit for the Rewards card load) with your cash or credit card payment for the Rewards card amount. Then just use the Rewards card like a gift card. BUT do not throw the card away when amount is used reload it at the register, again before your groceries are rung. Cards can be used for any merchandise except money orders, Western Union, lottery tickets, stamps, other Gift Cards. Pretty easy we get paid to shop!

Did you know the General Federation of Women s Clubs played a part in that event 100 years ago? GFWC President Mary Belle King Sherman, (Mrs. John Dickinson) served as the 10 th international president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, for two administrations: and Prior to serving as international president, she served as GFWC Conservation Chairman from By the end of her service as Conservation chairman, she had helped guide the formation of six national parks, represented GFWC at the dedication of Rocky Mountain Park near her home, and advocated for the GFWC resolution supporting the National Park Service Bill. On August 25, 1916, the National Park Service was officially created when President Woodrow Wilson signed the bill creating the National Park Service.

5 Sherman was born in New York in She later moved to Chicago where she was active in the Chicago Woman's Club, taught at the John Marshall Law School, and wrote a book on parliamentary law. In 1909, the family moved to Estes Park, Colorado, for the health of their son. In Colorado, her interest in conserving natural beauty became a personal passion. She died January 15, Mary Belle King Sherman of the National Federation of Women s Clubs, with Colorado Congressman Edward Taylor (to her left) and Colorado Governor Ed Carlson (to her right) and other dignitaries at the dedication of Rock
