1 May - September Newsletter 2016 Dear Quilters, Happy Spring and pre-summer to you! We certainly are looking forward now to the wonderful rebirth of flowers and foliage. Our School House event will be held two days this year instead of one. You can read about it on the Special Events page. We will be doing the same demo's each day so don't feel you will be missing out on something when you come either on Friday or Saturday. I can't tell you what the demo's will be as I haven't been to Quilt Market yet. It's a little over a month away from now as I'm writing this in early April. I do know there will be prizes awarded each day. Each attendee gets to fill out an entry ticket for the drawings. Thank you for asking if we were going to have it again...you're excitement about it keeps me energized also. The two days will be Friday, June 17th & Saturday, June 18th. If you are interested in classes-please take the time to read about them. There are 31 different ones listed in this newsletter. Some advance dates too. Check the Monthly Sales page - there's a sale every month. We will be closed Saturdays: July 2nd and Sept. 3rd for the holiday weekends. Class Policy: Because our classes fill so quickly and have waiting lists, I have found it necessary to initiate the following policy: For BOM's (Block of Month), ROM's (Row of Month) or TOM (Technique of Month) classes, 50% of the total payment is due at signup. It uses one of Judy's (48) 2 1/2" bali pops that have the fabrics already gradated from lightest to darkest for you from 1-8 in six different coordinating colorways. You will need a background and a dark fabric to accent the stained glass look. Beautiful and easy quilt. The pretty pinwheels will be a breeze to piece using KT's layered patchwork technique and one mini charm pack, plus a background, border/binding fabric. 3 Love at Home 2nd Tuesday of the month for 7 months, starting May 10th, 6:00-9:00 This 95" x 109" sampler quilt features 15 houses that have a different 6" finished patchwork block on the front of each house. There are alternate blocks that give it an Irish Chain flavor too. Let Barb guide you step by step to complete this striking quilt. Fusible Raw Edge Appliqué Workshop - the McKenna Ryan Way 2nd Wednesday of EVERY month, 10:00-1:00 Mt. Pleasant has been teaching the beautiful McKenna Ryan wallhangings for years. It seems to have evolved into many different wallhangings being worked on during the class as gals are all at different stages and different McKenna Ryan projects. This doesn't phase Pat at all as she can multi-task and help each person no matter what stage they're at. If you've always wanted to try this technique, choose a McKenna Ryan pattern that you love and sign up for class. Or..if you're in the middle of one...bring it and come along! There are 3 different quilts with 3 different sizes available-so you chose your size ranging from 22" x 26 to 51" x 64." Pam Buda's new, complete collection: "Antique-Old Greens/Blues" has arrived along with many coordinating bolts of Pam Buda's, plus "The Collection for a Cause" circa 1889 from Moda. You've requested this era of fabric - we listened! Kits available: can pick-up/ship also. Stack -n-whack Saturday, May 13th, 10:00-3:00, OR, Saturday, September 10th, 10:00-3:00 This class sure has been a favorite one! Barb has taught it to over 530 gals since we opened the shop. Once you take this class, you will never look at fabric the same way again. You need only one fabric to make the 12 different star blocks, plus a background and accent fabric. 4 Nantucket 2nd Saturday of the month for 4 months, starting May 14th, 10:00-2:00 Combine machine piecing and applique to create this stunning 25" x 32" wallhanging from Lori Smith of From my heart to your hands. You can choose your applique method from raw edge fusible to turned under edge and machine applique, or turned under edge and hand applique. You will make 4 courthouse log cabin blocks and 5 beautiful floral blocks. Pam will make sure you have no stress in completing this beautiful piece! Kit available if you choose. This class is for you! Karen will guide you every step of the way. Some gals tell me they are afraid to start...don't be...if you can sew on a solid line, use a rotary cutter and ruler... you can make a Judy Niemeyer quilt, wallhanging or tablerunner. Pineapple Ruler Technique Workshop Tuesday, May 24th, 10:00-1:00, OR Tuesday, May 24th, 6:00-9:00 The Pineapple Ruler by Creative Grids sparked much interest at our Log Cabin Fever Mania Open House, and many asked for a class or lesson on using it. In this workshop, you will complete one block which will be your sample/reference block or use it as the first block in your project. No specific project will be featured, but patterns are available to choose from if you wish to make that first block into a throw. The fabric requirements are listed on the pattern, otherwise refer to the supply list for the fabric sizes you will need for making one block. 5 Mini Retreat #4.- Churn Dash Tuesday, May 31st 10:00-3:00, OR, Tuesday, May 31st, 5:30-9:00 Churn Dash Mini Retreat! This block is known by many names, Broken Plate, Double Monkey Wrench, Double T, Dragon's Head, Fisherman's Reel, Hens and Chickens, Hole in the Barn Door, Indian Hammer, Joan's Doll Quilt, Lincoln's Platform, Love Knot, Ludlow's Favorite, Old Mill Design, Picture Frame, Puss in the corner, Quail's Nest, Sherman's March, Shoo Fly, and Wrench. No matter what you call it, we are sure to have a fun time piecing it! Purchase your fabric and have it cut accurately with the Accuquilt. Your pre-cut kit will be waiting for you when you come in for the class, or if you prefer there are instructions for rotary cutting the pieces. Cutting fee: $15.00 Teacher: Kathy English Class Fee: $20.00 Vintage Compass 1st Wednesday of the month for 5 months, starting June 1st, 10:00--1:00 The cutting instructions are simple, the foundation paper piecing is fast as the pieces in the pattern are large pieces, which come together to complete an 8 pointed compass star. The second layer of points are off set by a contrasting background and the simple curved strip pieced border make this Judy Niemeyer project striking! For beginners or the obsessed Judy Niemeyer paper-piecer! You can sew all day if you wish, but Julie's responsibilities will end at 1:00. You will enjoy using this quilt on your backyard swing, for a picnie or a tablecover. The blocks are simple log cabins and the seeds are fusible applique. You can use the Creative Grids Log Cabin Ruler if you wish, but not necessary. You will have this fun quilt done in time for the July 4th holiday! You will be served watermelon, and weather permitting...maybe we should have a seed spitting contest! Kit available if you choose. 6 Beginner's Class 4th Thursday of the month for 3 months, starting June 23rd, 6:00-9:00 This class is for the beginner who would like to start at the very beginning,... (or the person who needs to sharpen up their quilting skills,) with rotary cutting skills, learning quarter inch seam allowances, piecing, border and binding techniques. You will end up with a quilt that can be used as a couch throw/twin size: 61" x 76"...show it off to your family and friends! Easy to select fabrics as it uses only 6. Teacher: Jackie Roberts Class Fee: $35.00 A Taste of Bali 3rd Friday of month for 4 months, starting July 15th, 10:00-3:00 Like the look of Bali Wedding Star, but afraid to tackle a large quilt...try the small version - a 33" x 33" tabletopper/wallhanging and learn the techniques. Who knows...maybe you'll want to give the full size quilt a try in the future. Kits available. If you ve never used the Hunter s Star tool, this class is a great way to learn how the tool works. Every other month we will be making a project from Debbie Tucker s new book Hunter's Star Hidden Treasures. (See Aug. 27th & Oct. 29th for those projects.) All of the projects are made using 8 light and 8 dark fat quarters or 2 yards of a light fabric and 2 yards of a dark fabric. Teacher: Debbie Thomas Class Fee: $35.00 Certified Studio 180 Design Instructor Row of the Month Club 4th Tuesday of the month, for 6 months, starting June 28th, 10:00-1:00, OR 4th Tuesday of the month for 6 months, starting June 28th, 6:00-9:00 This could also be called the technique club because each month will feature a specific block technique. We will be using Moda's All in a Row book to make classic, whimsical or seasonal rows using piecing, dresdans, embroidery, fusible applique and drunkard's path, with maybe a few variations. The mix-and-match possibilities are endless to design a project of your choice. If there's a technique you do not care for, the book offers many substitutions. This will be fun every project will be unique. You can make it scrappy or a two color quilt as shown in the book. Call us to order your book early to get your creative juices flowing! 7 Log Cabin Tote Thursday, June 30th, 10:00-3:00 Come and play with Barb -she's on a log cabin kick right now. Choose your scraps or plan your colorway to make 18 log cabin blocks using the Creative Grids 6" log cabin ruler. You will line the tote, and can add a pocket or two if you choose. Free pattern and free class with purchase of 6" log cabin ruler. (You will be able to use any of the Creative Grids log cabin rulers available after learning the technique in this class.) Crazy For Minis-Autumn Sky Wednesday, July 13th, 6:00-9:00 Every other month, Pam will be teaching from Lynne Hagmeier's book that uses mini charm packs (2 1/2" squares). July features the 34" square Autumn Sky mini quilt. Stars in rich autumn colors float in a deep navy sky. It uses 2 Mini charm packs plus background, borders/binding fabric (Look at the other dates: May 11th Sept 14th, & Nov. 9th to see which projects will be taught.) Sign up for 1,2, 3, or all 4 classes. Teacher: Pam Keefe Class Fee: $15.00 Christmas Patchwork Loves Embroidery Friday, July 22nd, & Tuesday, August 30th, 10:00-3:00 Get a head start on your Christmas/winter projects. Whether an experienced stitcher or have never picked up a needle, come have fun, learn & create a whimsical 16"x16" hand embroidery pillow as a sweet addition to your decor or as a gift for someone special. You will also do some machine piecing to complete this project. Best of both worlds: hand embroidery and machine piecing! Kit available if you choose. Teacher: Jeanne Gilbride Monthly Class Fee: $17.50 (50% due at sign-up=$ Remaining balance due at 1st class.) 10 Pockets: Purse/Tote Saturdays, July 23rd & August 6th, 10:00-3:00 This purse/tote has 10 pockets, including a padded free standing zipper pocket in the lining to hold your tablet if you choose. On the outside there are two patch pockets, a zipper pocket to hold things secure, and two pleated side pockets that will hold a bottle of water, umbrella or sunglasses. Inside the tote, along with the tablet zipper pocket, there is another zipper pocket sewn into the lining, a gathered pocket and 2 patch pockets. This purse/tote is perfect for everyday use or travel. 15" wide x 12" tall. Don't let the word "zipper" scare you away! 8 Mini Retreat #5 - Lemoyne Star Quilt Friday, July 29th, 10:00-3:00, OR Tuesday, Aug. 2nd, 5:30-9:00 Did I hear "NO "Y"SEAMS"? Yes, you did! Make this star quilt the easy way! You'll be amazed at how easy and quickly this quilt goes together. Choose your fabrics, we'll cut them accurately with the Acccuquilt. All you have to do is come to class, pick up your pre-cut kit and enjoy a relaxed day with friends. You'll be making a 54" x 66" quilt. Yes, the finished circle is 50" in diameter. This circle quilt can be hung on the wall, used as a table topper, drape it across the back of your sofa, etc. Last newsletter, I taught the Spicy Spiral Tablerunner and loved the look of it... this is a continuation of that look. 9 Snowfall Mixers using Quiltster- ADVANCE DATE 2nd Thursday of the month for 4 months, starting Sept. 8th Sept. 8th will be 5:30-9:00 for $20.00, 3 remaining months: 6:00-9:00 - $15.00 monthly, OR, 2nd Friday of the month for 4 months, starting Sept. 9th. Sept 9th will be 10:00-3:00 for $ Remaining months: 10:00-1:00. $15.00 monthly. Design your own snowflake quilt using Judy Niemeyer's new website called Quiltster. In the coming months, this website and process is going to be a hit all over the country! In the first class, we will learn the easy to use program, then design and chose your personal colorway for your quilt. We will print out the designs, fabric requirements and order the papers needed to create the quilt. In the rest of the classes, you will sew and assemble the components. Some experience with Judy Niemeyer's patterns is necessary. You can bring your own laptop to the first class if it can access the Internet wirelessly. You can also bring ipads or other tablets if they can access the Internet wirelessly. Devices with smaller screens (like phones or mini ipads) are not recommended, as it may be difficult to see the website properly. The demos will be going on constantly, so you can plan your day accordingly. I can't tell you what the demos will be, as I haven't been to Quilt Market yet. I will bring back the latest and greatest notions, patterns, gadgets - whatever it is that I find! It also can be things that are new to my shop too. (Maybe I missed some things last year.) You, the attendees will be the first to see all of the "goodies" that we haul back here. The selected theme for this year is Home Sweet Home. Free patterns will be ready to hand out: June 21. Quilters can travel, collect patterns from June 21 - Sept. 6th & purchase a kit if you desire. First person to bring in a completed quilt, (quilted, bound, labeled) using at least 8 different 2016 rows from participating shops will receive 25 fat quarters. If that particular shops row is in the quilt, there will be a bonus prize. You can collect fabric license plates from each shop too. Have fun traveling and collecting.
