1 APRIL 2012 THE QUILTERS QUILL Board Meeting April 5, 2012, 9:30 AM Business Meeting April 12, :00 AM Visit us at: From the President Our library exhibition this year went very well, thank you Lilly for all your good work. There were many members who brought in their lovely quilts and they looked very good on the walls, dressed up the auditorium very nicely. March 17, Lynn Gorges was there to date quilts and we had a very good response to that, many people showed up to have their quilts dated. Thank you Lynn for an excellent job as usual. Also thanks to the members who were there to show their quilting skills. The quilt show is not that far away, so everyone keep in mind how you will be able to assist before and during the show. It sounds like Lynn Peck Collins has everything under control. This week Dorothy and Mary Beth are having their workshop so get your sewing supplies together and plan to attend. 2 Vice President The triangle exchange is going full steam ahead. I hear there will be more than 3000 triangles in the exchange at last count! If you haven t joined, there s still time. Just tell Phyllis, Chris Gillespie, Dorothy Najarian or me---all are welcome. The more the merrier. Triangle Surprise: The instructions for the triangle project are in the March newsletter if you need to check back. Edyta Sitar s website is laundrybasketquilts.com. Kirsta at All About Quilting has the special papers or you can order them directly from the website. Don t forget the triangles are due no later than May 10 so the committee can sort and return them to you. If you have any questions, be sure to ask one of us. They make up really quickly so get to it! Mystery Quilt: All the instructions are out for the mystery quilt. Some tops have been finished and the surprise is terrific. Don t forget the big show and tell for the mystery quilts will be at the June business meeting---in any stage of completion! I can t wait to see all the different color selections. Upcoming projects: The May business meeting program will be by Penny Finney and Alvina Diello. They will present two charity quilts for the guild to make for 2013 s Relay for Life. It looks like a lot of fun and for a good cause. Come and make a block! More information is elsewhere in the newsletter. Regrettably, Nancy Degen had to postpone her cathedral windows workshop so it will not be given on April 26 th as planned. We ll let you know when it is rescheduled. Charity Workshops: The third Thursday of each month is dedicated to charity quilts and projects. April s workshop is scheduled for April 19 th. Mary Beth Seidenfield and Dot Gibson will be demonstrating a block, which is simple to do, but looks much more complicated when it s done. Sounds like fun. I believe there s a materials list in this newsletter. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Beth or Dot. Please let Dot or Mary Beth know if you re planning to be there for the workshop so they ll know how many to expect. Ruth Powers is demonstrating the Warm wishes block on June 21 st. May and the other months are open so if you want to share a block for charity, please sign up. We thank Kay enormously for all that she does to help things go smoothly NC Quilt Symposium: Don t forget the NC Quilt Symposium being held at Western Carolina University from June 7 to June 10. Classes begin on Friday. Information about the Symposium is at stitch n chat. We also have a DVD with great information and pictures. Details can be found at General Information: All scheduled workshops will begin at 9:00 am. Going forward, there will be a sign up sheet for any scheduled workshop, whether professional or by a guild member. The person running the workshop should be sure to have a sign up sheet available for the

3 business meeting and stitch n chat so plans can be made to accommodate the number of people who plan to attend. This should make the workshops go more smoothly. Thanks! Marty Dzioba AQS Just a reminder if you want books I can order at 30 % off. Helen Williams CWS Any and all items you wish to donate will be greatly appreciated. God bless you, Betty Williams and Chantal Huestis HISTORIAN: TRQG members that have photos of Guild activities they would like to share, please send them to Lynn Peck-Collins, Historian. If you have a batch of them, the Guild will provide a blank CD, and a postage paid return envelope for your convenience! Just call, , or lpcollins@embarqmail.com Lynn and request a CD. Thank you Dean Stevens SUNSHINE REPORT Cards sent this month: Get well to: Rosemary Trabucchi Sympathy to: Linda Drabeck Family of former member Sue Joyner

4 Thinking of you/get well: Pat Zach (for her husband) see note from Pat Z. below Dear quilting friends, I want to thank everyone who sent cards and messages to us, and prayed for both of us. I believe the power of the prayers is very strong. Zach had this major (lung cancer) surgery on 3/26 at UNC Chapel Hill, and was released after five days. He had a minor complication, which forced us to spend Easter weekend back in Chapel Hill again. Today, we had an appointment with Zach's oncologist here in New Bern. He had the surgeon's report and the pathology report as well. All results indicate that Zach is now cancer free and will be with me for many more years. Thanks again to all, Patty Z For those who remember Sue Joyner and want to send a message to her family, please send to: Ms. Dori Joyner & family, nd Ave, Edmonds, WA Please, if you know of someone who is ill, a family member ill, a death in the family, let me know so I can write a note and send a card. We want these members to know we do care for them. My and phone are in the directory. Thank you. Ruth Powers BLOCK OF THE MONTH This month s block is known as Mothers Dream. We made 28 kits and sold all 28. I will make up another 10 that will be available at stitch and chat. The winners of the Star Puzzle blocks were Chris Gillespie and Dean Stevens. If you have any questions about this month s block or need, any fabric or help with the past blocks call me or see me at Stitch and Chat. ED HOME OF THE BRAVE This month we will send out three quilts to families who requested them on the national web site. Their loved ones most likely were injured and died later of their wounds. I am glad that we can give them some comfort with our efforts. I expect us to have several more to send over the next month or so that we have received request for quilts through the national site. Please finish up any churn dash HOB block that you have so we can get more quilts ready. Thanks for all your help. Mary Beth Seidenfield RAFFLE QUILT Kirsta Meadows of All About Quilting in Jacksonville is hosting QUILT IN A DAY with Patricia Knoechel at the Jacksonville Commons Middle School from 2-4 PM. She expects many quilters to attend and extends an invitation to us. It promises to be an interesting 2 hours. Call Claudia Hughes for driving directions at

6 CHARITY SEW DAY - 3rd Thursday of each month Community Service Project, Thursday, April 19 We will be working on a very simple, quick together scrap quilt top. It would be a good quilt for a child as well as a nursing home resident. I found the quilt on craftsy.com, as well as a pattern for the block. The block is Arkansas Crossroads. Just remember we will be doing the blocks in a different size. 4 inch and 7 1/2 inch. Each block uses, 12 4-inch squares and 2-7 1/2 inch light squares. The quilt I brought to the business meeting contained 12 blocks. Dorthy Gibson and I will bring our supply of 4 inch squares so don't worry if you don't have a variety. You can pick addition squares from our collection. Remember, scrap quilts are a great way to use some of your (and my) uglies. Perhaps you can also trade with each other. We will also have available some batting, backs and some lights. You should be able to complete most of your top before you leave and have fun with other quilters. Any questions? Call or me, I'm in our directory. Mary Beth Seidenfield BLOCK CHALLENGE FOR NEW QUILT SQUARE Block to be turned in anytime between now and September 13th meeting none will be accepted after that. Turn in block and fold paper in zip lock provided by me roll up Ziploc so pressed block will not wrinkle. Attach name to block (paper & pin). Any questions call - Dorothy Gibson NOTES FROM THE EDITOR Alvina will be taking thread orders for the Robinson-Anton thread. She will have the order book with her at stitch and chat and at the May business meeting. Alvina will be placing an order after the May business meeting. If you don't come to the church, you can call her to place an order at The Activities Director at Courtyards Assisted Living home has called and requested ladies to come teach hand piecing/quilting to some of the interested residents. This can be for any amount of time. He would supply the needed items. Please give your name to Penny if you can help. This could be done once a month, and we could come up with a block that would be appropriate and when several are done could be combined into a lap robe. Lori Richardson at Cotton Fields in Washington is having days of appreciation for our guild April 24 thru 29 giving a 20% discount. You must show your guild card to receive this discount
