1 OCTOBER 2014 THE QUILTERS QUILL Board Meeting October 2, 2014 Business Meeting October 9, From the President What wonderful weather we have been having. Fall is one of my favorite times, even if it means more work in the garden. This is a busy fall with everyone working on their quilts for the show. I'm getting really excited to see them all and to see what is for sale at our booths as well the vendors. If you haven't volunteered to help yet, you can still contact Lynn Peck-Collins to see what she needs. Our October meeting began with some simple yoga moves to help with the strain and tension arising from sitting and sewing for a long time. Thanks to Ellen Sink we all should be able to be more comfortable while sewing or doing other activities that require long periods in one position. I've tried her suggestions they really work. We have chairpersons for our exhibit at the Bank of the Arts, Penny Toler and Diane Rezab. They will need your help to get the quilts hung. And, also of course, supplying quilts to be exhibited. Quilts will need a sale price on them, so this is another opportunity to sell some of your work and get some money to buy more fabric!!! We have our slate of officers for next year. Voting will take place at our November meeting. It will be one week earlier that usual, November 6. Please mark you calendar and come to the meeting. The members nominated by the nominating committee: Chris Gillespie, President; Sandy Egolf, Vice President; Becky Barnes, Treasurer; and Anne Jelinek, Secretary. I want to thank them all for stepping forward to play these rolls for our Guild. Without willing members we could not function. One final item, several members scheduled to attend the Chrystal Coast Quilt Guild's Day of Sharing now find they will not be able to go. If you think you would like to go contact me so I can give you the name of someone to substitute for. See you at the quilt show!!! 2 VICE-PRESIDENT AQS I want to extend my thanks to Ellen Sink from Durga Yoga in New Bern for the Seated Yoga Presentation and Demo at our Business meeting. Please remember to make your room reservations at the Clam Digger (252) identifying that you are attending the retreat Chris Gellespie The staff, volunteers and clients of Coastal Women's Shelter send warm thanks to our members, who so generously purchased school supplies last month, and paper products and bath linens this month. Your response was phenomenal! And thank you all for your financial support of the Christmas Angel Fund collection during our meetings. We will be able to provide a wonderful Christmas for a CWS client family this year. For November, they have requested nonperishable canned and dry foods to restock the emergency pantries they maintain at the offices, as well as in the shelter itself. Canned soups, stews, meats, veggies, and fruits are needed, as well as dry goods like cereal, instant oatmeal or grits, cake mixes, frosting, potato or rice mixes, snack size treats and bottled juices. Additionally, they need storage items like plastic wrap, foil, wax paper, and zip lock bags (sandwich, quart and gallon sizes.) They especially requested freezer bags to facilitate packaging donated perishable meats and foods into serving size amounts for the freezer. One ongoing need that the staff has identified is for bathrobes or housecoats to enable clients to cover up as they prepare for each new day. They would like to be able to provide one to each resident at the shelter who is in need. Therefore, we are requesting this for December's wish list, along with any scarves, hats or mittens we have traditionally collected in years past. Again, thanks for your generous support of CWS and its mission! Mary Ann DeRossett Page 2 of 10

9 QUILT OF VALOR M.D. Johnson, Chief Petty Officer, retired, of the Navy Sea Bees. A Quilt of Valor was requested by his sister-in-law, Bonnie Favorite, to Bertha Adams, her former teacher. Mr. Johnson served several tours in Vietnam. Bertha got several other members of the guild to help, and a quilt was made and quilted, with Bonnie doing the binding. She presented it to Mr. Johnson recently. Bonnie wrote us back that his specific words were I don t know whether to laugh or to cry, that strangers would do this for me. Mr. Johnson s wife is very ill and he has been the caretaker. Bonnie felt he needed something that was especially for him. Per Bonnie, I can t say enough about all of the time, effort, and care that all of you put into this project. I never dreamed that you would all work so hard to make this a reality, especially in such a short time frame. I am immensely grateful. Page 9 of 10
