What an outstanding Holiday Celebration we had at the Flame. Excellent food, Wonderful decorations, and Lots of great surprises.!!!!!!! Many thanks to the committee lead by Linda Bory and Kit Crouch and all their outstanding worker bees. Fun was had by all. I know that they had a great time planning this event and they are looking for individuals who would like to lead, help co-chair, or participate on this team in If you are interested in getting to know fellow quilters even better, this is a great way to make it happen and have fun. Please see Linda Bory if you are interested. I would also like to thank everyone for the wonderful ivy wreath that you gave me at the party. It looks lovely in my home and makes me think of all my quilting friends. I would like to wish you all a safe, healthy and wonderful holiday with friends and family. Lynn Peck-Collins MILITARY QUILTS On December 11th, Carol Hansen and I delivered a dozen quilts to the Kinston Veterans Home. Nicki, the home's program director,thanked us profusely and graciously gave us a tour of the facility. The Kinston Veterans Home, which was opened in 2013, is a 100 bed nursing home/ rehab center. There are four units of 20 beds each and a 20 bed Memory Loss unit. Each unit has it's own beautifully decorated central "living room", a family style dining room as well as a recreation room that is shared between two units. The patient rooms are spacious single units with enough space for an individual to bring a piece or two of furniture from home. I spotted several quilts on the foot of beds as we toured the facility. The quilts we delivered will be given to a resident or veteran who is there for rehab. Ninety-three of the 100 beds are occupied with the majority of residents veterans from WWII and Korea. At present there are 4 female veterans in residence. The Memory loss unit is relatively new and when asked if they could use fidget quilts, Nicki's answer was a resounding yes. So, once the holidays are past and you are wondering what to do with some of your scraps, please consider making a fidget quilt for a veteran. Thanks for all you do for our men and women who are serving or have served to protect our wonderful country. Merry Christmas. Bobbie NURSING HOME QUILTS We had five lap quilts donated this month and one fidget Quilt. Those were from members : Ruth Powers, Phyllis Prideaux ( three), Kay Amend, and Evelyn Bernhardt. Thank you ladies so much, these will keep some senior citizens warmer this winter. Page 2 of 12

3 Keep making those quilts, they are most appreciated by the Nursing homes that I deliver to. And as usual thank you for all you do. Dean Stevens CHILDREN S CHARITY QUILTS I have nothing to report on children's quilts except I hope you will find time sew a quilt. I would like to thank those people who were involved in putting the raffle gifts together. I won one of the baskets and it was so packed with wonderful items and can't wait to use them all. Welcome Pam LIBRARY No Report 2016 RAFFLE QUILT Ticket sales are going extremely well for our raffle Quilt. We took it to Greenville's day of Sharing on Dec. 5th and folks were lined up to buy tickets before we could get it displayed! It was by far the most talked about quilt of the day. Our next opportunity for sales will be at the N.C. History Center downtown New Page 3 of 12

4 Bern, Jan 23rd through Feb, 22nd, Invite a friend to come see our Quilt display in the Duffy Center and they will have an opportunity to buy a ticket also! For all of you who have sold or purchased tickets already, thank you, thank you. Please remember that this is our largest fund raiser and we are all asked to do our part to support our Guild. That is a small request in exchange for the wonderful opportunities we derive from being members of this wonderful Guild. At 6 for $5.00 that equates to $.83 a ticket. Where else could you find an opportunity to own a magnificent piece of art for $.83! What a great sales pitch. Let's keep the momentum going!! I hope everyone has wonderful holidays and may all your quilting dreams come true! Kathy Farrar HOLIDAY LUNCHEON Thanks to everyone who attended and participated in our 2015 Holiday Luncheon. We believe it was a wonderful success and hope you all left in good spirits, winners and losers alike. Thanks also to the committee members. We could not have done it without each of you. Happy Holidays, Linda and Kit Winter retreat We had great response to sign-up for Winter Retreat at the meeting. There are no openings left however we will take names in case of cancellations. Call or either Sue Kleeman or Ruth Powers if you want your name on the list. We do keep a list if we have more names than slots because we always have a cancellation or two. The number of attendees is limited because of the size of our sewing room. It s first comefirst served, so let us know. Dates are January 18-22, 2016, at the Clam Digger Inn on Atlantic Beach. You must call in ( ) with your credit card to reserve your room, or do it online. Be sure to tell them you are with the Twin Rivers Quilters. Many of us go down on Sunday afternoon prior to the official start date of Jan. 18. If the Bogue Room is not busy that Sunday, we can get in there to set up our machines and sew. Thanks, Ruth Powers DONATIONS Bring your hotel/motel soaps, shampoos and lotions to the guild to be given to Religious Community Services (RCS) by Alvina Diello. Or if you choose, you can take your donations directly to RCS. They are located at 919 George Street, New Bern and also are in charge of the homeless shelter and soup kitchen. RCS does not sell anything that is donated to them - they give it to the needy or use it in the soup kitchen. They also take household items as well as furniture. They have a van and will come and pick up large items. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and caring for those less fortunate. 5 When you get ready to baste your quilt add a few extra inches on one side of the basted quilt of both the backing and batting. When you are ready to practice quilting or check your thread tension you can take some leftover fabric from your quilt top, lay it over the extra batting and backing and practice. That way you are practicing with the same batting and backing and you'll have a better idea of what the quilting will look like. Submitted by: Chris Babich Thanks Chris.. After that, the fee is $ Business Meeting Etiquette In the interest of expediting our meetings, keep the flow going, and showing respect to each other, the following will be implemented. Our bylaws state that we conduct meetings following Roberts Rules of order, therefore if you would like to speak to the membership, raise your hand, be recognized, give your name and state your business. In order to try to make the meeting shortened, please try to arrive 30 minutes early (9:30am) to do your sign in, get Block of the month, take care your procedural items before the meeting is called to order at 10:00am. That we can have your full-undivided attention for the meeting, eliminate confusion, and make the meeting shorter. Thank you, I was in Michaels today and the checkout clerk asked, timidly, if I was over 55. They have a 10% discount for seniors EVERY DAY, and it is in addition to any other discount coupons you may have. Apparently some clerks have been verbally abused when asking if a customer is eligible, so they may hesitate to ask. Looking at the website, they also give 15% for teachers and military. I don t know if it applies to retired military or to spouses, though. Adah MENTORING COMMITTEE With the goals of the Mentoring Committee being to ensure all who join the Guild are welcomed and encouraged to learn more about quilting Chris Babich and Sandy Egolf are teaching a six lesson class starting in January for beginners. The last slots were filled during the wonderful Christmas luncheon. If anyone is still interested we can put you on a waiting list by ing (chris.babich@gmail.com) or call Classes start on January 22, 2016 and will meet the third Friday of each month through June. The class will work on a 42" sampler wall hanging. The students will get a packet of information later in December to cover fabric amounts and notions. The purpose of the Mentoring Committee is to act as the contact for a new member with questions and to create a positive means for new members to easily understand the fun and many opportunities of being an active TRQG member. If there is a newcomer out there that we missed please contact Chris Babich at or chris.babich@gmail.com to let me know. FYI The Sun Journal is now taking donations for several animal groups. If you are still having a problem, Karen said you could contact her. Thanks. COMMUNITY QUILTS A Community Service Workshop will be held on January 28 from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm at the church. Please bring sewing machine with a walking foot, rotary cutter/small cutting matt, and basic sewing supplies. Also, please bring lunch. Scrap material will be provided or you can bring your own scraps. We will be sewing on paper using a flip and sew technique. OPTIONAL : we will be sewing on paper which can be purchased from the Sun Journal in a roll for about $3. Please cut paper into 6 1/2 inch squares. If you would like to come and help cut strips, iron or just observe, please do so.
