1 Quantum with Giucy Giuce Giuseppe Ribaudo (AKA Giucy Giuce) learned to sew from his grandmother at a young age. In 2008 he began quilting and has never looked back. Not only a pattern designer and quilt instructor, he is also the multimedia manager at Andover Fabrics. Giuseppe resides just outside of NYC in Queens. He is an avid modern traditionalist quilter with a great passion for simple design in bright colors. In class you will experience Giucy Giuce s different ways of making flying geese and HST s, and details of medallion quilting. Also see examples of his work and process. 2 Page 2 Have you completed your Block? This month s Saturday Sampler Demos are October 11, 12, or 13 Round Tuffet Wouldn t it be fun to use our favorite fabric to make a piece of furniture? If this sounds interesting, then this is the class for you. In just two classes you will create your own unique tuffet. If you know how to use a rotary cutter and can sew a straight line, the class will be nothing but fun. In the first class you learn the technique to make the cover to your tuffet. You will then have time to complete your cover before the second class. The second class we put it all together. Required: Upholstery kit - $120 fee payable to the instructor. These reversible placemats offer tow styles in one and the rolled hem cloth napkins completes the look. In this class, you will learn to quilt as you go, using serge and flip method, serge a three thread decorative edge and rolled hems. 3 Page 3 Pumpkin Potholder Get in the mood for fall cooking with this cute pumpkin potholder. Even if you re not a cook, you can use this potholder as a nice kitchen decoration. Or as a quick and fun gift for friends and family. In this class, you ll learn how to make a potholder using InsulBrite (to handle the heat) and bias binding (for the curved edges). Once you see how easy it is to make a potholder, you ll never buy another one again! Required: Magazine Instructor: Sue Fee: $27 Friday, October 19; 12 3 pm Jelly Roll Rug Make a 30 x 44 coiled rug from one jelly roll and strips of batting updated with modern fabrics. This is a two part class. Required: pattern, batting, thread and machine that can do a zig zag stitch Instructor: Marilyn Fee: $36 Sundays, October 14 and 28; 4 6 pm OR Thursdays, November 15 and 29; 6 8 pm OR Fridays Nov 16 and 30; am Witch s Hat Free Standing Lace Isn t this the cutest thing? Learn to make Free Standing Lace on your embroidery machine using just thread and stabilizer. The design is sewn right on the stabilizer which is later soaked away, leaving a beautiful lacy design. Just 3 units hooked together make the hat. Watch out! It s very addictive and we have lots of other FSL projects! Be sure to see our OESD special to get free designs for more. 4 Page 4 Beginner Quilt Class Big Shoos We will be learning all the basic techniques you need to start quilting in this 4 part class to make a lap size (54 72 ) quilt from start to finish. Rotary cutting, ironing, ¼ seam, pinning, half square triangles, and lining up seam intersections as you put a block together. There will be homework to do between classes so we can finish the quilts in the last class, so while you can borrow a machine in class if desired, you must have one at home too. I want people to have fun and be excited to go on to sew more quilts in the future! Required: pattern Instructor: Nyssa Fee: $90 Mondays, October 22, November 5, 12, 26; 6 8:30 pm Holiday Coasters in the Hoop Join us in creating a set of 8 embroidered coasters completely made in the hoop. This is an excellent project to explore machine embroidery or to get you back into embroidery. These will make great gifts and are addictive and fun to create. Choose from Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas Design Pack. No embroidery machine? No problem, use one of ours, but let us know when you register. In this class, we ll create a sampler piece using designs from Bernina s online WeAllSew Rulerwork Quilt-Along and Amanda Murphy s book Rulerwork Quilting Idea Book. And, of course, there will be lots of Sue s tips and tricks thrown in too! We ll stitch out 15 different designs using the Bernina straight-edge ruler, circle rulers and oval rulers. Here s your chance to take your free-motion rulerwork to the next level and have lots of fun in the process! 5 Page 5 Fused Flower Table Topper This is a great class for using up your leftover flowers from Laura Heine collages. Good for those of us who love big flowers but not always cut up in our quilts. You will make your own design using pre cut images into a table topper. Instructor: Eve Fee: $36 Sunday, October 28; 11 am 3 pm One Block Wonder The One-Block Wonder is a one-of-a-kind quilt composed of hexagonal kaleidoscope blocks created from a single fabric. The technique creates an art quilt full of swirling movement. For an optional border, you can also use the same fabric. In this class, you will learn how to prepare and cut your fabric. The real fun begins when you start designing your individual unique quilt top. Required: One-Block Wonders Book Instructor: Marla Fee: $45 Saturday, November 3; 10 am 1 pm and November 17; 10 am 12 pm Your First Quilt Now Find out if quilting is for you by taking our 2-session, nocommitment class! Choose your fabrics ahead of time, then come to class prepared to sew. The pattern is our free Easy Up to the Bar design. You ll be piecing the bars and adding borders, then doing the quickest finishing ever. Go home after the second session, and show off your very own, snuggle-ready quilt. 6 Page 6 Beginner Machine Quilting Your quilt top is finally pieced and your pattern ends with those three scary words quilt as desired. Now what? Take a deep breath, drop those feed dogs and start machine quilting! In this class, you ll learn to free-motion quilt some basic designs including curved lines, meandering, echoing, and loops. We ll also discuss needles, threads, batting and tension. Instructor: Sue Fee: $36 Sunday, November 4; 12 4 pm Canvas Tote Bag A classic and sophisticated tote featuring canvas and or cork with added feature of leather straps and hardware. This simple and elegant tote has divided front and lining pockets. Best of all you will learn all the techniques to sew canvas and cork (optional), leather and rivets. We will use tools! 7 Page 7 Quilts for Kids On the first Tuesday of each month a group of experienced, charity-minded quilters meet at PQW to sew for the organization, Quilts for Kids. Quilts are donated to care facilities to be given to children who are ill, abused, or in difficult situations who could use the comfort of a handmade quilt. Although all the spots for sewing participants are filled, we can certainly use more volunteers to sew quilts at home. Kits will be provided. In this club you will receive EPP advice from the instructor, see what others are making, and sit and stitch for two uninterrupted hours. Along the way you will visit with friends old and new, learn the benefit of slow sewing and make a lovely project by hand. Or say that you really want to get the hang of paper-piecing or some other skill. Or maybe our classes just don t fit in your schedule.
