1 Sew-ology Gazette Dear Material Girl, August 2018 Summer is coming to an end. We have little bits here and there going on in the store this month. We have an entire weekend dedicated to Broomhilda and her Halloween inspired quilt. Since it s a little warm still and busy schedules, we have lots of choices for one day courses in purses, totes, wallets, and such this month. We even squeezed in the highly requested Jelly Roll Rug. We have one more opportunity for our teen sew-ist to make a pair of pajama pants or shorts before the school schedule starts back up. 2 Painters Garden Saturday, Aug 4 9:30am-10:30am Imagine Saturday, August 18 9:30am-10:30am October 26 and 27 (Friday and Saturday) The Material Girls Quilters' Quest Cruise liner departs each day from LaPlata, MD and returns each evening. The cost is $150 per person. The cost includes 1 hour stops at all 10 shops, lunch each day and a pizza party on Friday evening. A deposit of $75 is required to hold your spot. The balance for the bus trip will be due September 15th, After 9/15/18, there will be no refunds.

3 Embroidered Beach Bag We can always use another bag. This one will show off your desire to be at the beach in your flip flops enjoying your summer. This is a design including 2 sizes, 6 x 10 (Mega Hoop or 7x12 (Maxi Hoop), plus this bag is fully lined. You will also learn how to add cork accents and handles using cork. NO turning tubes or folding bulky fabric. The embroidery is done in the hoop and the bag construction is one with regular machine stitching. This will be a fun class while adding to your purse collection or making a gift. Wednesday, August 8 10:00am-3:00pm (1 day course) $35 Instructor: Jan August 23rd through 25th Grab your ghoul-friends and come sit a spell. It s time to start sewing or embroidering on Broomhilda s Bakery quilt. Amy will be here to lead you through all the techniques and help you get motivated to have boo-tiful quilt by Halloween this year. And of course, she will feed you too! For both sewing or embroidery versions of the quilt. 9:30am-5:00pm daily $100 If you have purchased your Broomhilda Bakery Quilt Kit from Material Girls, the weekend is only $50.00

4 University Become a Master of your BERNINA sewing machine! Now that you ve bought your fabulous new machine, let s learn how to use it. These classes are free to those who purchased their BERNINA sewing machine at Material Girls within the last 6 months. If you did not purchase your BERNINA from Material Girls, please call for pricing information. PLEASE call and register for classes at least one week prior to class start date. Master Your Sewing Machine 1 For all current BERNINA models This class is designed to be used as a step-by-step guide to familiarize you with the basic operation of your BERNINA or bernette sewing machine. Please see our website for a supply list. Saturday, August 18 11:00am-2:00pm Jubilee Quilt Kits now available. Be ready for the sew along in September on Teen Sewing We will be learning how to read and prep a pattern for garment construction as we create a pair of pajama shorts or pants. July Feature: Studio 180 Design Corner Beam Come and learn how to make fast, crisp, accurate Corner Beam units, without doing all the math using the Deb Tucker Studio 180 Corner Beam ruler. When finished you will have a complete 12 block to take home. This class is a fun way to learn a new ruler without even purchasing it first. Also, a fantastic way to use up you re your extra scraps. Carry your cell phone/ mobile, cheques, cash, cards, coins and still have room for your favorite lipstick or even personal items. A wire frame at the top edge makes the totes extra sturdy. Remove the wire frame and they're washable! Wednesday, August 15 10:00am-3:00pm (1 session course) $30 Instructor: Jan Hello Pouches Enjoy stitching up these sweet little zippered pouches. They feature a quilted base for stability and a see-through vinyl top so you can say hello to all your treasured trinkets. Pattern includes instructions to make all four sizes. Wednesday, August 29 10:00am-2:00pm (1 session course) $20 Instructor: Jan Join us for a few hours of slowing down and comradery. Grab any handwork project that has been lying around for you to finish and come on by. It is time to finish it. It does not have to be a quilting related project. 6 Camp Cameo: Fabric Cutting Learn how to cut fabric for appliques from svg files. Cameo! Camp Cameo classes are FREE when the Cameo is purchased from MGQB! $25 if not purchased from Material Girls. Saturday, August 11 10:00am-12:00pm Jelly Roll Rug Learn this great technique to use a stash of fabric and cotton batting to add a splash of color in your kitchen or elsewhere. To make this super easy use pre-cut jelly roll and pre-cut batting by the roll. Thursday, August 16 and 30 10:00am-2:00pm (2 session course) $35 Instructor: Jan Strip Club 2018 Enjoy specially selected designs that are ideal for 2 1/2 strips or for cutting your stash down to size. All the projects are great for beginners to advanced levels. This year we will focus on using the Strip Tube Ruler from Cozy Quilts. This ruler makes half square triangles a breeze by combining brilliant engineering with "the tube technique. We will meet for a lesson and a sew-in so you can have a great start on completing the project. We will meet every other month. Sign up for whatever project appeals to you. You can register in person, by mail, or by phone. Class minimum is 5 students. If Material Girls must cancel a class due to lack of participation, the class fees may be transferred to another class or refunded. You must register for a class at least 24 hours in advance. 2. A refund of store credit is only provided if you cancel 1 week prior to start of class. If the cancellation is less than one week, no refunds will be given. 3. Space is reserved on a first come first serve basis and students are required to bring a sewing machine and basic sewing supplies to each class. 4. In order to keep class fees to a minimum, keep the lights on, and the roof over the store, we ask for your cooperation and offer a discount to purchase your class supplies at Material Girls.
