Our Day at the Quilting Spa has become a perennial favorite and it is back this year with another new mystery quilt from Debbie Caffrey. Envision a day when you set up your work area and begin to sew. Before long someone offers you coffee, or maybe tea. At noon, enjoy your own bag lunch while you take a break and chat with some friends, whether old or new. Light refreshments are ready in the afternoon, and by the time you re ready to leave you ll be well on your way to a finished quilt top. The best part? Purchase your fabrics for the quilt at Pennington Quilt Works, and your Day at the Quilting Spa is free!! The pattern, snacks, drinks, and any help you need is on us. When you register for the Spa, you ll be given a supply list and some preparation instructions. Bring everything on your spa day and we ll provide the rest of the directions, step by step, at the pace you d like. Stay as long as you d like. 3 Page 3 Row by Row Experience Find and explore beautiful quilt shops as you travel! June 21 September 4, 2018: Visit participating RxR quilt shops to pick up your free RxR Sew Musical themed row pattern. One pattern per person. Each shop creates a pattern so collect as many rows as you can. Use the row patterns to design a quilt using at least 8 different rows from 8 different participating stores. Be the first person to bring a finished (quilted, bound, labeled) quilt into a participating quilt shop and receive a bundle of 25 beautiful fat quarters! Include that shop s row in your quilt and receive a bonus prize! Limit one prize per person. Event Ends October 31, One Block Wonder The One-Block Wonder is a one-of-a-kind quilt composed of hexagonal kaleidoscope blocks created from a single fabric. The technique creates an art quilt full of swirling movement. For an optional border, you can also use the same fabric. In this class, you will learn how to prepare and cut your fabric. The real fun begins when you start designing your individual unique quilt top. 4 Page 4 Master Has completed Beginner kids Camp and is entering 5th grade or above. If your young sewist wants more project challenges, here is a perfect next step from Beginners camp! Learn sewing techniques with fun projects perfect for a PJ party! We will learn to sew a pair of Pajama pants (or shorts), a pillowcase with French seams, a nicely lined drawstring bag, a pennant banner, and bonus little projects too in space time. By the end of the week the student will be comfortable with reading a pattern, cutting out projects with dressmaker shears, and creating a clean finish on projects. Required: patterns Instructor: Nyssa Fee: $150 plus supplies August 6 10; 1 pm 4 pm Advanced Entering 6th grade or above and confident in sewing on a machine (made projects similar to Beginners/Masters before), OR has completed Beginners and Masters classes. A whole new array of projects from last year! This time we are making a matching outfit of a stretch knit top ( The Lark Tee ) and tiered elastic skirt, with accessories from the Everyday Essentials book - interfaced tote bag, lined pouch with curved zipper top, and zipper wallet with a snap. We will learn new techniques and sewing from measurements. Required: patterns Instructor: Nyssa Fee: $150 plus supplies August 20 24; 1 pm 4 pm Teen Has completed Beginner camp and is entering 7th grade and above. Learn to design, cut, and sew your first quilt! We will focus on the basics of quilt construction, including safe rotary cutting, sewing a 1/4 seam, laying out the backing, batting, and top, and then tying a quilt to finish it off. This simple and elegant tote has divided front and lining pockets. Best of all you will learn all the techniques to sew canvas and cork (optional), leather and rivets. We will use tools! Use a set of precut foam placemats and learn this fast technique. Choose your favorite seasonal fabrics to use yourself or give as a gift. Required: pattern and rotary skills Instructor: Arlene Fee: $27 Monday, August 27; 6 9 pm Fishy Placemats If you have ever desired to make an art quilt but don't know where to start, why not begin with a smaller scale design like these fun, colorful fish placemats, designed by Laura Heine! We will make one of the fish placemats in class, you will learn about color placement and fused raw edged quilting so you will be able to finish the others at home. 6 Page 6 More Free Motion Quilting Using Rulers Ready to have some more fun with rulers? In this class, we ll create a sampler piece using designs from Bernina s online WeAllSew Rulerwork Quilt-Along and Amanda Murphy s book Rulerwork Quilting Idea Book. And, of course, there will be lots of Sue s tips and tricks thrown in too! We ll stitch out 15 different designs using the Bernina straightedge ruler, circle rulers and oval rulers. Here s your chance to take your free-motion rulerwork to the next level and have lots of fun in the process! Required: Required Book and a beginner ruler work class or some ruler experience Instructor: Sue Fee: $45 Friday, August 17; 12 5 pm Flying Dutchman Tablerunner This charming tablerunner looks complicated, but it goes together easily. The runner is made up of rectangles, some plain and some pieced with folded corners. With precise placement of these rectangles, your runner will look like 14 interconnected spinning blocks. Make it scrappy or use 14 different fabrics for the blocks. This is a great project for scraps and leftover jelly roll strips. Required: Simple Folded Corner ruler, sewing and rotary skills Instructor: Sue Fee: $36 Wednesday, August 29; 1 5 pm Free Motion Quilting Using Rulers Machine quilting using rulers on a domestic sewing machine has been getting a lot of attention in the quilting world recently. If you ve purchased the Bernina 72 foot and ruler kit and want to get started using them, this 2- session class is for you. In the first 3-hour class, you ll learn how to use the Bernina rulers and practice on muslin. You ll play with the 5 rulers that come in the Bernina starter set. In the second 3-hour class, you ll work with the rulers on a simple table runner you ve made prior to class. Working with rulers will open a whole new world of fee-motion quilting to you. It take a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, you ll be hooked. 7 Page 7 Rangeley Wall Quilt This one-day class will teach you a simple and accurate technique using the Tucker Trimmer to make this challenging wall hanging. The project can be made using just the four colors or it can be made scrappy by using a variety of fabrics for the different star points. Once learned, you can use this method to make the Rangeley table runner or Rangeley king size quilt. If you are ready to put your serger/overlocker to good use, or if you want to see what it's all about, here's the class. These reusable grocery and produce bags are not only a must-have for all, but are simple to make. Large enough to carry lots of groceries, the bags are durable and washable. Keep your produce separated with the produce bags, made of utility mesh fabric. With these bags you will be doing your part in being "green." No serger? You will get the basics for sewing a bag with a pocket, lining, and zipper. Now what? Take a deep breath, drop those feed dogs and start machine quilting! In this class, you ll learn to free-motion quilt some basic designs including curved lines, meandering, echoing, and loops. We ll also discuss needles, threads, batting and tension. 8 Page 8 Quilts for Kids On the first Tuesday of each month a group of experienced, charity-minded quilters meet at PQW to sew for the organization, Quilts for Kids. Quilts are donated to care facilities to be given to children who are ill, abused, or in difficult situations who could use the comfort of a handmade quilt. Although all the spots for sewing participants are filled, we can certainly use more volunteers to sew quilts at home. Kits will be provided. In this club you will receive EPP advice from the instructor, see what others are making, and sit and stitch for two uninterrupted hours. Along the way you will visit with friends old and new, learn the benefit of slow sewing and make a lovely project by hand. Let s say that a class you're interested in requires rotary skills, and you re still snipping along with scissors. Well a 1-hour private class will bring you up to speed. Or say that you really want to get the hang of paper-piecing or some other skill. Or maybe our classes just don t fit in your schedule. Talk to any one of us and we ll find you the right person at the right time to teach you what you need to know. $25 per hour per person.
