The presentation highlights works from his latest projects, including his patchwork, fabric, needlepoint, mosaic, painting, and knitting designs. A tremendous amount of Kaffe s inspiration comes from his continuous travels, and his lecture is designed not so much to instruct, but to empower and inspire the audience to create and develop their mind s eye. Leave invigorated and entranced by Kaffe s sense of color, and ready to try it yourself! The slide show lasts approximately 1 hour followed by a question and answer session and book signing. $35 per person. Pennington Quilt Works Summer Mini Quilt Challenge In anticipation of Kaffe Fasset s September visit PQW is hosting a Mini Quilt Challenge showcasing his fabrics. Three Viewers Choice Prizes, awarded at Kaffe s lecture on September 25. First prize: Three 5-yd pieces of Kaffe Fasset fabric, plus a fun prize basket donated by our vendors Second and Third prizes: Three 2-yard pieces of Kaffe Fasset fabric plus a fun prize basket donated by our vendors Also: a gift for every participant! Challenge Guidelines: Registration for the challenge is $20 and includes your choice of 4 FQ s from our specially chosen Kaffe Collective grouping (under Shop Online, click on Summer Mini Quilt Challenge), and your entry form. Feature your 4 fabrics in your mini, adding additional fabric as desired. Use a commercial pattern (giving credit of course!) or design your own. See our large selection of mini patterns in the store or on line (under Shop Online, click on Minis Patterns and Books). Your mini should have a perimeter of 100 inches or less. 2 Classes in GREEN are great for Beginners! Page 2 Ahhhh.SPA Every quilter s dream is to spend an uninterrupted day devoted just to quilting, and we ve devised a way to give you just that. Our Day at the Quilting Spa has become a perennial favorite and it is back this year with another new mystery quilt from Debbie Caffrey. Envision a day when you set up your work area and begin to sew. Before long someone offers you coffee, or maybe tea. At noon, enjoy your own bag lunch while you take a break and chat with some friends, whether old or new. Back to work, but who wants to face ripping out that mistake? Don t worry, we ll have it all fixed for you. Light refreshments are ready in the afternoon, and by the time you re ready to leave you ll be well on your way to a finished quilt top. The best part? Quilting Fundamentals Machine Quilting I Your quilt top is finally pieced and your pattern ends with those three scary words quilt as desired. Now what? Take a deep breath, drop those feed dogs and start machine quilting! In this class, you ll learn to free-motion quilt some basic designs including curved lines, meandering, echoing, and loops. This simple yet striking quilt will look great in any combination of fabrics you choose. You ll start right at the beginning learning rotary cutting, accurate seaming, block construction, quilt assembly, and settings and borders. For each block a center square is surrounded by logs, very reminiscent of a traditional log cabin block, but with an updated feel. Set them on point with side triangles in your choice of sizes. 3 Page 3 Quilts for Kids On the first Tuesday of each month a group of charity-minded quilters meets at PQW to sew together for the organization, Quilts for Kids. Quilts are given to children who are ill, abused, or in difficult situations who could use the comfort of a quilt made for them. Experienced quilters only, please. Please bring your lunch or snack, your machine and sewing supplies. Quilt kits will be provided. Please register ahead so we know how many to expect. Let s say that a class you're interested in requires rotary skills, and you re still snipping along with scissors. Well a 1-hour private class will bring you up to speed. Or say that you really want to get the hang of paper-piecing or some other skill. Or maybe our classes just don t fit in your schedule. Talk to any one of us and we ll find you the right person at the right time to teach you what you need to know. $25 per hour per person. Tuffet We are always looking for new ways to use fabric. Wouldn t it be fun to use our favorite fabric to make a piece of furniture? If this sounds interesting then this is the class for you. In just two classes you will create your own unique tuffet. If you know how to use a rotary cutter and can sew a straight line, the class will be nothing but fun. In the first class you learn the technique to make the cover to your tuffet. You will then have time to complete your cover before the second class. The second class we put it all together. Go to the website for more ideas. Into the Woods There s nothing like taking a stroll through the woods on a crisp fall day, with the gorgeous colors of autumn all around you. Using 1-1/4-1-1/2 wide strips in a variety of blues, brown, greens, tans, and rusts, you ll make strip-pieced blocks for the background of the quilt. Add some trees and leaves using either raw-edge or machine qpplique to create your own stunning art quilt. This class will cover strippiecing blocks on foundations and sewing partial seams. Raw-edge and machine applique with be discussed. Required: pattern and rotary skills. Instructor: Sue, $45. Wednesday, September 21, 1-3 and October 5, 1-4 Policy for class registration You must pay for a class in full in order to receive the class supplies list and to reserve your place. You may register by phone, on line, or in the store. If you need to cancel, please do so at least 10 days prior to the first class in order to receive a full refund. If an emergency arises and you cancel less than 10 days before the first class, but at least one day before, a class certificate will be issued. Please use this for emergencies only as late cancellations can be problems for us. All books and patterns and some special tools required for a class can be purchased at a 20% discount after paid registration. Check that class enrollment minimums have been met before purchasing supplies. Modern Quilt Guild Monthly Meetings, Second Tuesday 7-9 pm September 13, October 11 Modern quilting is a new and rapidly growing movement in the quilting world. The Modern Quilt Guild is made up of over 100 guilds across the country and world. It s a Wrap Fabric Bowls Learn to make beautiful fabric bowls by wrapping strips of fabric around clothesline and then sewing them into place. Steel Ball Purse This purse is not only cute, but it s quick and easy to make. All you need are 3 fat quarters, the purse handle and a few hours. The best part is that you can re-use the handle. Then we ll schedule 2 private hours with you and a Bernina educator to begin exploring with you all you d like to learn. From there you ll be guided into more private or small group classes to go as far as you d like. Here are the areas you can expect to cover in classes: Sewing Machine Basics Machine Basics covering basic operations, practical applications and machine care. Stitching Fun Decorative stitching, memory, alphabets, combi-mode and special techniques. For all electronic machines. Quiltmaking Skills Special attention to those features on your Bernina that are especially useful in quilting. Piecing, machine appliqué, free-motion quilting, and using the walking foot are covered. We ll include the BSR if you have one. Embroidery Basics Learn to find, set up, and manipulate designs, and stitch them out with success. Unravel the mysteries of threads, stabilizers, and hooping. For machines with embroidery units. More Embroidery Techniques Learn to do embroidered appliqué (our favorite!) while you dig deeper into your machine s embroidery features and perfect your skills. Take basics class first. My Bernette When you purchase your Bernette from PQW, we will arrange your individual or small class sessions to fit your schedule. My Bernina 7 and 8 Series The Newest 7and 8 Series machines have their own unique features and we ll tailor your sessions to them. Software Sampler Club 2016 A monthly club that will explore Bernina Embroidery Software 7. Each month we will watch a video presented by Amanda Whitlatch of Bernina of America, covering some component of Software 7. You will receive a CD that will include a Power- Point of the video, written instructions and project suggestions. Then we will walk through the lessons ourselves. Bring your laptop with the software installed, if you have it. But this is also a great opportunity to see what Bernina Embroidery Software 7 is all about even if you do not yet own it. Don t have a Bernina? That s okay.
