SUGGESTED DESIGN PROCEDURE The fllwing steps illustrate ne apprach t wrk with a client t arrive at a lighting system design that can be implemented successfully with Simply Autmated. STEP 1: ORGANIZE THE LOADS INTO GROUPS The first step is t put all the switches int grups: ne grup fr each primary space r functin. Typical grups include: Outside Lights: these are lads arund the perimeter f the huse that nrmally are cntrlled by switches scattered abut at varius lcatins. Pathway Lights: these are lads that prvide the basic lighting t mve arund the huse. Lads include the frnt dr, the entry hallway, stairwells, the garage entryway, etc. Family Rm Lights: these are lads in a rm that cmbine t create a md r atmsphere. Often there are numerus switches ganged at ne lcatin r ganged at several lcatins. STEP 2: SELECT A CONTROLLER FACEPLATE AND DECIDE HOW IT WILL CONTROL EACH GROUP Once yu have the switches in grups, decide what the hme wner will want t d with each grup. The result f this step is a list f keypads, rcker r cmbinatin faceplates, and the desired behavir fr each buttn r rcker switch. Keypad buttns are typically used t activate scenes, rcker switches are typically used t cntrl an individual lad, scene r a grup f lads in unisn: Scenes (links): each scene turns a grup f lights n t specified levels. Scenes are mst cmmnly used in spaces like family rms and kitchens. Remte Switches: these are cntrls that allw the hme wner t turn n lights frm anywhere in the huse, and are mst cmmnly used fr utside lights (turn n the frnt dr light) and whle huse light cntrl (all lights ff). This prcess is prbably the mst imprtant step, and shuld be dne with the client s input. Here are sme examples t help illustrate: Outside Lights: Place a keypad by the frnt dr and the back dr. Bth will behave the same, and include buttns fr: All On: Turn n all the utside lights. Evening: Turn n the nrmal lights that illuminate the driveway and frnt dr. Party: Turn n the yard spt lights and accent lights that highlight the landscaping. All Off: Turn ff all f the utside lights. Kitchen: Place a keypad in the kitchen with buttns fr: All On: Turn n all f the lights in the kitchen. Evening: Turn n just the lights fr a nrmal evening. Ck: Turn n the lights needed t ck and prepare dinner. Dine: Turn n the lights ver the dining table, and dim the lights in the kitchen t prvide the apprpriate dining atmsphere. Late Night: Turn n the under-cunter lights just enugh t be able t walk arund in the middle f the night. All Off: Turn ff all f the lights in the kitchen. Basement Light: Use a single rcker n ne f the faceplates in the huse t remtely cntrl the basement light. The rcker tp buttn turns the light n and the bttm buttn turns it ff. 3 f 13

Master Keypad: Place a keypad in the master suite with buttns fr: Outside All On: Turn n all f the utside lights. Outside Evening: Turn n nrmal evening lights. Outside All Off: Turn ff all f the utside lights. Inside All On: Turn n all f the inside lights. Inside Evening: Turn n the nrmal evening lights: Kitchen Evening and Pathway lights. Inside Late Night: Turn n pathway lights just enugh t get arund during the night. Inside All Off: Turn ff the inside lights. STEP 3: PREPARE YOUR BILL OF MATERIALS The results f the first tw steps are lists f switches, remtes and keypads r ther faceplates alng with a list f the desired behavir / cmmands fr each lighting grup. Fr each switch, calculate the ttal lad n the circuit: Switches are rated at 900W max, lamp mdules are 400W max. In additin t yur list f required switches, refer t the Cnnectin Diagram and Bill f Materials belw t determine an verall list f required parts fr the installatin. STEP 4: PREPARE YOUR LIST OF LINKS In a Simply Autmated system, all lighting cmmands are ultimately reduced t links. In UPB Lighting systems the terms scene and link are ften used interchangeably. A link is a lighting cmmand that causes specific switches t change their state. If a switch is suppsed t respnd t the link, we say the switch is enrlled in that link. Links are identified by a number, r Link ID. Link IDs start at 1 and increment upwards in sequence. Grup the links accrding t keypad/faceplate. Using the examples abve, ur link list wuld lk smething like this: Link ID Link Type (Mde) Rm / Grup Link Name 1 Link Activatr Outside Outside: All On 2 Link Activatr Outside: Evening 3 Link Activatr Outside: Party 4 Link Activatr Outside: All Off 5 Link Activatr Kitchen Kitchen: All On 6 Link Activatr Kitchen: Evening 7 Link Activatr Kitchen: Ck 8 Link Activatr Kitchen: Dine 9 Link Activatr Kitchen: Late Night 10 Link Activatr Kitchen: All Off 11 Link Activatr Basement Basement: On 12 Link Activatr Basement Basement: Off 13 Link Activatr Inside Inside: All On 14 Link Activatr Inside: Evening 15 Link Activatr Inside: Late Night 16 Link Activatr Inside: All Off 4 f 13

INSTALLATION OVERVIEW Once the system has been designed, the fllwing steps are needed fr installatin. Refer t the diagrams that fllw fr varius wiring scenaris. 1. Rugh-in the high-vltage electrical wiring fr the lights as thugh yu were using standard light switches. 2. During the electrical rugh-in, at a cnvenient lcatin, add a single-gang utlet bx fr the RS-232 Cmputer/Pwerline Interface Mdule (PIM). 3. Run a Cat5 cable frm the PIM t the g! system. If the single-gang utlet bx fr the PIM is in a finished wall, then yu may wish t add a secnd single-gang utlet adjacent t cleanly terminate the Cat5 t an RJ45 Female cnnectr. 4. Install the switches, remtes, keypads and PIM. 5. Install the phase cupler at the breaker bx. 6. Pwer up the switches and cntrllers. 7. Standard transceiver switches and remtes cme frm the factry with default settings as listed belw. Test the switches and remte switches t cnfirm that the apprpriate lad turns n and ff as expected. Use the duble-tap fr any lads that shuld nt be dimmed. 7 PROGRAMMING OVERVIEW The system prgramming can be dne in tw phases. The ffline phase cnsists f system design and definitin and is accmplished prir t installatin f the system, with the assistance f the UPStart Setup Tl frm the Simply Autmated website. At the cmpletin f this phase the lighting system switches and cntrllers are defined with their lcatins, names, faceplate types, links (scenes) and switch memberships are defined. The nline phase invlves assigning cmpnent IDs and uplading the design t the physical cmpnents (switches and cntrllers). This prcess is accmplished nline, using the UPStart Setup Tl frm the Simply Autmated website. Prgramming the system requires that the switches be pwered up and wrking, and that yu cnnect t the lighting system with yur cmputer, thrugh the RS-232 Serial cmputer interface mdule (PIM). THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WITH SIMPLY AUTOMATED LIGHTING Befre describing the ffline and nline phases in mre detail, here are a few items t bear in mind when designing and prgramming the system: WORKING WITH ROOMS When yu set up a grup f switches, they shuld all have the same behavir. Fr example, in a kitchen, all the lights shuld have the same fade rates s they dim up and dwn tgether, and they shuld all have the same LED setting s that switches in a multi-gang bx lk the same. T help rganize switches, we suggest yu place each grup f switches frm yur design int its wn Rm when yu add them during the prgramming prcess. This will allw yu t visually see each grup n its wn, and allw yu t much mre easily cnfirm that all the settings in a grup match. COPYING SETTINGS One imprtant feature f the UPStart Setup Tl is the ability t cpy settings frm ne switch t anther. After yu setup yur switches int Rms, yu shuld carefully setup the first switch in that rm with the desired fade rates, LED settings and s n. Then simply cpy thse settings t the ther switches in the rm. WRITING TO A UPB DEVICE After changing the cnfiguratin f a UPB device make sure yu use the OK buttn t save the change nt the X buttn in the upper right hand crner. After changing the cnfiguratin f a UPB device and writing the data t the device make sure yu use the clse buttn and nt the X buttn. Using the X buttn is the same as cancel and will result in a mismatch between the Netwrk cmputer file and the data n the switch. This behavir is in versin f UPStart. 7 f 13

SIMPLY AUTOMATED FADE RATES Fade rates that can be adjusted in a Simply Autmated UPB switch: Default Fade Rate: This is the fade rate that is used when yu single tap r press and hld a rcker. Setting this t lw will make it very hard t get the right brightness, while setting it t high will frce the user t wait a lng time t change lighting levels. We suggest a value f 3.3 secnds. The Default Fade Rate is set n the Optins tab in the Edit Device dialg. Link Fade Rate: When yu set up a switch, yu specify the fade rate t use fr each link. This is the fade rate used when smene presses a scene buttn n a keypad. We suggest 1.6 secnds. The Link Fade Rate is set n the Receive Cmpnents tab f the Edit Device dialg. Imprtant Nte: It is very time cnsuming t change the fade rates fr switches after the fact: we strngly recmmend that yu establish the fade rates fr each grup f switches befre yu begin prgramming the system. In cases where yu r the custmer may nt be familiar with the fade rate behavir, install just a few switches and try different settings t determine what fade rates t use. LIGHTING SYSTEM PROGRAMMING OFFLINE PHASE The fllwing assume yu are wrking with UPStart Setup Tl versin 4.4 build 5. Sme f the dialgs may be slightly different if yu are using a different versin. Step Instructins Cmments 1 Click File, New Netwrk File t pen a new file fr yur prject 2 Click Device, Add t add switches and keypads This dialg asks fr a Netwrk Name, a Netwrk ID and Passwrd. The defaults are fine. NOTE: The Netwrk ID is needed later in the g! Cnfiguratr. NOTE: D nt set the Netwrk ID t 0. Set the Manufacturer and Prduct, and click Next. Then set the Rm Name, Device Name and Unit ID and set the Hardware Optin (faceplate, etc.) that the device will use frm the drpdwn menu. The Rm Name and Device Name are used t rganize and display the switches and cntrllers: create a new Rm fr each grup f switches, and set the Device Name t smething simple yet recgnizable. Simply typing in a Rm name will create the rm. As yu add additinal devices, UPStart will increment the Unit ID s that yu can start at 1 and wrk upwards in rder. Add all the switches and cntrllers at this time. As yu add them they will pp up in the tree structure at left. 8 f 13

Step Instructins Cmments 3 Click Netwrk, Link Names t add and name the links Click New, then type in the Link Name. UPStart will set the first Link Id t 1, then autmatically increment fr additinal links. Add all f the links at this time. Nte that links can have ne r mre switches enrlled. Fr example, a link named Huse All On wuld have every switch in the huse enrlled, whereas a link name Pathway wuld have just the lights between the garage and the kitchen enrlled. Link #241 is used in all cases t refer t the lad that is physically cnnected t a device. 4 Setup the devices in the first Rm In the tree structure at left, select the first Rm: this will display all the switches and cntrllers frm that rm in the windw t the right. 4.1 Right-click the first switch frm the windw at right, then click Edit 4.2 Click the Receive Cmpnents tab t view the links in which this switch is enrlled 4.3 Click the Transmit Cmpnents tab t map the buttns t links 4.4 Click the Optins tab t view the available switch ptins This brings up the Edit Device dialg, which allws yu t edit the settings fr the switch. Enrll the switch int the required links, up t a ttal f 16. Fr each link: Set the Level. Nte that changing this level later while at the site is easy t d at the switch, s getting it perfect at this time is nt critical. Set the desired Fade Rate. Select the link name and mde fr each keypad buttn r rcker switch. Mde sets the buttn behavir such as Link Activatr r Tggle: A Link Activatr turns n a link and is usually used fr scene cntrl in a Living Rm / Dining Rm area. The Tggle allws fr n/ff tggle cntrl f a link and is usually used t cntrl a single r grup f lights. There are varius ther mdes explained in the selectin are f the sftware. Chse the ne that matches hw yu want the buttn r switch t act. Select the desired LED Clr Cntrl. Cnfirm that Reprt light level after rcker switch is pressed is checked. If the light shuld nt be dimmed, set Dimming t Nt Enabled. Fr switches that supprt dimming, set the Default fade rate. 4.5 Save the settings fr the first switch Click OK t save yur changes. 5 Cpy the settings fr the first switch in the rm t any ther switches in the rm Right-click the secnd switch in the rm and click Cpy Cnfiguratin. In the list that appears at the bttm, select the switch yu want t cpy frm (in this case the first switch prgrammed abve) and then click OK. Repeat fr the remaining switches. 9 f 13

Step Instructins Cmments 5.1 Right-click the next switch in the Rm, then click Edit This brings up the Edit Device dialg, which allws yu t edit any individual settings fr the switch. Check the transmit, receive and ptins tab fr prper cnfiguratin. 6 Prgram the remaining rms Select the next rm in the tree structure at left and repeat the steps in #4. 7 Save yur wrk Click File, Save t save yur changes. LIGHTING SYSTEM PROGRAMMING ONLINE PHASE IMPORTANT NOTE: Yu shuld nt prgram the lighting system while the g! system is als cnnected and cmmunicating with the lights. Unplug the g! s PIM frm the 120V utlet r turn ff the HmeBrick while yu make changes t the lighting system. Run the UPStart Setup Tl with an RS-232 PIM cnnected t the lighting system and yur cmputer. Step Instructins Cmments 1 Click Tls, UPB Interface t cnfigure the PIM interface. 2 Click File, Open Netwrk File and lcate the prject file fr this system Set Interface t Pwerline Interface Mdule (PIM-R), and set the Cmmunicatins Prt t the crrect COM prt. Click Cnnect: if yu dn t see check marks fr the fur items in the list belw then stp and crrect yur setup. This will retrieve all f the switches, cntrllers and settings frm the ffline prgramming phase. 3 Prgram the devices in the first Rm In the tree structure at left, select the first rm: this will display all the switches and cntrllers frm that rm in the windw t the right. 3.1 Right-click the first switch in the windw, then click Install/Replace This brings up the Install / Replace Device dialg. Put the selected switch int setup mde. This prcedure may vary but is typically dne by tapping n the tp left rcker r buttn 5 times. If unsure hw t enter setup mde refer t the Simply Autmated dcumentatin that came with the device. When the lad enters setup mde it will change state, and the LED n the switch will flash quickly. Click OK in the dialg t prgram the switch: when the prgramming is dne, the switch is taken ut f setup mde, and the dialg prgress shuld indicate that prgramming is cmplete. Each switch takes rughly ne minute t prgram. Repeat fr the remaining switches in the rm. 4 Prgram the remaining rms Select the next rm in the tree structure at left and repeat the steps in #3. 10 f 13

OTHER UPB LIGHTING FEATURES In additin t the steps and settings listed abve, there are ther features available in the lighting system that may be useful in certain situatins. A few are listed here as examples: DOUBLE-TAP BEHAVIOR Each switch can be setup t send a link when the rcker is duble tapped. This can be helpful t add a functin at a lcatin withut the need fr a separate keypad. Cnsider pathway lighting frm the frnt dr t the garage. A keypad is installed at the garage dr, because that dr is mst cmmnly used. N keypad is installed at the frnt dr t minimize wall clutter. When smene taps the switch by the frnt dr, the light in the entry ges n. When they duble-tap the switch at the frnt dr, all f the pathway lighting t the garage is turned n. 11 f 13

COMMON MISTAKES 1. Installing UPB in the same building with Lutrn HmeWrks, RadiRA r GRAFIK Eye systems. The pwer supplies that Lutrn manufactures create nise n the pwer line that interferes with UPB cmmunicatins. Cntact g! r PCS fr suggestins t minimize the nise if yu need t make bth systems wrk tgether. 2. Using the PIM with three phase pwer. Fr any installatin that has three-phase pwer, yu must cntact Simply Autmated. 3. Installing UPB with nisy dimmers. Sme standard 120V dimmers, when set t very lw brightness, will create nise n the pwer line that can interfere with UPB cmmunicatins. Cntact g! r Simply Autmated fr suggestins t islate the nise frm nisy dimmers. 4. Failing t plug the Cat5 cable assembly int the crrect serial prt.
