1 Slavic and Celtic Flklre: Heric, Spiritual, Practical, Spring 2018 Pster Prject, Due Mnday, May 28, by 5 p.m.: Create a 16 x24 pster using a design prgram (see belw) and depsit it as a PDF fr printing by sending yur PDF t Sean at her TESC Williams@evergreen.edu. As yu are wrking n yur psters, SAVE frequently in multiple places: n the web server, n a flash drive, a hard drive. Cmputers crash--and yu dn t want t lse yur wrk this way. Prgram prs and cns (*Recmmended*): Phtshp*: Adbe Phtshp is a straightfrward and wnderful multi-purpse tl (mres than Adbe Illustratr) that can create fantastically rendered digital paintings, edit and manipulate images (therwise knwn as phtshpping) and make graphics nearly as well as Illustratr. Hwever, unlike Illustratr, yu will have t be mindful f the relatinship between image quality and image size. Illustratr des nt use pixels t make graphics, but Phtshp uses pixels regardless f what yu are making. Publisher*: Publisher is Micrsft s bn t the budding authr: yu can make graphics and make simple manipulatins and edits t phts. Yu start with chsing page size templates, s yu knw what yur pster will lk like printed as yu wrk. It s easy t use because there are icns and labels n all the tls which are rganized in tabs, unlike the panel f tiny symbls layered n tp f ne anther in Adbe prgrams. If yu have Micrsft Wrd, chances are yu have Publisher. PwerPint*: Using PwerPint is a very simple way t create yur pster. With PwerPint, yu are able t rganize varius images and inserted text t create whatever layut yur heart desires; yu are, hwever, unable t d any significant edits t digital images withut the aid f external prgrams. GIMP: GIMP is a free, simple, and t-the-pint editing sftware that runs as if Phtshp were stripped f its mre cmplex features and were made fr beginners. Yu can make drawings and paintings, edit phts, make graphics, and perfrm a few simple manipulatin techniques, hwever yu cannt d anything cmplex and really awe-inspiring. Did we mentin it s free? Because it s free. FREE. Which means it runs like its free. Adbe Illustratr: Adbe Illustratr is the premiere graphic design tl that can make yur wrk lk supreme at any size and scale with abslutely endless pssibilities and, if experienced, shuld be yur g-t fr design. Hwever, it is als incredibly cmplex, and can cause undue frustratin with its less than accmmdating interface and a mind f its wn. Dn t use this t get started, please. Save yurself the stress and heartache that cmes with this prgram wrught frm the blackest pits f hell. Wrd: It s Micrsft Wrd. Yu prbably knw a lt abut Micrsft Wrd. Amng the things yu knw abut Wrd, yu knw it is incredibly finicky when it cmes t using images, and that it isn t gd fr much besides what it advertises: Wrds. Yu can make minr edits t pictures, such as remving backgrund nise, cutting, stretching, and stitching, and yu can use sme f its tls t make pre-selected graphics, thugh nt with the accuracy f ther prgrams.

Sme f the actins may nt directly translate int Mac.*** Hw t use fnts frm the internet: Search free fnt dwnlad nline Helpful hints fr all prgrams: Open a website search result (priritize websites that have https, the s means secure s yu wn t accidentally dwnlad a virus) Chse the fnt yu want and click dwnlad When the dwnlad bar pps up, click the arrw by save and select save as Save the file smewhere yu can find it Open the file, then click n the.zip file with the fnt name On the pp-up, click n the fnt file On the secnd pp-up, click the install buttn Nw the fnt shuld appear in every prgram s fnt menu A great website fr fnts is DaFnt.cm, where yu can search a library f 34,000 fnts that are abut 90% free. Shut ut t the fnt Benjamin Franklin by Dieter Steffmann. Hw t cnvert yur final dcument as a PDF: Cnverting yur files t a PDF is as easy as pie. If yu are wrking in any Adbe and/r Micrsft Office applicatin, yu can save yur image as a PDF by clicking Save As and under the Save As Type menu bar yu can click PDF (it is under Phtshp PDF in bth Illustratr and Phtshp) and then yu re finished. Other prgrams may nt have these functins, s here is the best way t cnvert. 1. Dwnlad Adbe Acrbat Reader DC 2. Install the sftware 3. Select File and frm the drp-dwn menu, select Create PDF Frm File 4. Select the file yu wish t cnvert t a PDF 5. Cnvert t PDF 6. Ta-da! Keybard Shrtcuts: (A nrmal plus (+) sign means t press at the same time, nt as a key t include in the shrtcut itself.) If yu are n the heathen s Mac, the Cntrl(ctrl) key wuld be Cmmand(cmd), and the Alter(alt) key wuld be Optins (fr sme reasn als alt). Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z t g back ne step. Pressing it again will re-d yur un-d. Ctrl+Alt+Z / Cmd+Shift+Z t g back multiple steps as pressed. (Limit 100 steps, Ps+GIMP nly) DOES NOT WORK IN ILLUSTRATOR: Ctrl+Shift+Z will allw yu t g back multiple steps in Illustratr.

3 Ctrl+Y / Cmd+Y t re-d a step. Ctrl+C / Cmd+C t cpy a selectin. Ctrl+X / Cmd+Xt cut (the selected image will disappear) Ctrl+V / Cmd+V t paste. Ctrl++(plus)/ Cmd++(plus) t zm in. Ctrl+-(minus) / Cmd+-(minus) t zm ut. Bet yu culd have guessed that ne. Ctrl+Shift+N / Cmd+Shift+N t make a new layer/slide Micrsft Office Publisher: Create dcument size: Open a new dcument and click the Mre blank page sizes (3 rd ptin), then create new template size (last ptin). In the pp up, enter 16 int the width and 24 int the height. The margin guides are fr yur reference, they wn t restrict the printing/wrkspace. Yu can change these guides (r the page size) in the Page Design tab. Save as: Save yur wrk ften as yu g! Click n the File tab, then Save as, then put the dcument smewhere yu ll be able t find and name it smething recgnizable. Change the backgrund: In Publisher, yu can easily change the backgrund clr f the dcument by clicking the Page Design tab, then the Backgrund icn n the far right f the screen. Click Mre Backgrunds in the drpdwn menu, then use the pp-up menu t create a backgrund clr, gradient, pattern (frm a limited library) r picture. There s nt much yu can d with the picture after it s made int a backgrund, s I d suggest inserting a picture making it fill the entire space if yu want a picture as the backgrund. Insert a picture: Click the Insert tab, then either the pictures icn t uplad smething already n yur cmputer, r the nline pictures icn t search nline fr pictures. Yu can als just cpy and paste smething frm nline, but pen the search result t get a bigger and clearer picture befre yu cpy. Edit a picture: Yu can change the size f a picture by dragging the crners, and mve it by dragging frm smewhere in the middle. Yu can use any clr filter n a picture by clicking the picture t select it, then the frmat tab, then the reclr icn. Click n Mre Variatins then Mre clrs t create yur picture clr. Play arund with the picture effects and brders t create the image yu like. Insert Text: Open the Insert tab then click Draw Text Bx. Draw a bx (yu can mve/shape it later) then type/edit the text like yu wuld in Wrd. Text Effects can be really cl! Layering: If yu have an bject yu want t be in frnt f anther, like text n tp f a picture, right click n either bject and click the bring frward r send back tab. Yu can als d this frm the Frmat tab. Insert/Edit shapes: Open the Insert tab then click the Shapes icn. Chse frm the drpdwn menu and insert the shape by drawing it in the dcument. The squiggly line is a freedraw ptin. Yu can rtate the shape dragging the little yellw dt abve it. In the frmat tab,

4 there are shape fills and shape utline icns; in the drpdwn menu select Mre fill/utline clrs t get a pp-up menu f clr ptins and transparency ptins. By using the transparency slider, yu can make a shape (r picture) that is in frnt f an bject transparent, s yu can see the image underneath. The Edit Shape icn n the Frmat tab allws yu t add sides/pints/curves t a shape whereas Change Shape means yu want t switch the shape with a new ne (like a circle t star) but keep the frmatting. Tips fr Publisher: In mst cases, yu want t have the Text Wrap ptin n the Frmat tab switched t nne. This makes sure the picture desn t misplace/distrt the text. Wrd Art can be fun, but yu can d as much (and even mre) editing regular text in the Text Bx Frmat tab. Micrsft Office PwerPint: The little paintbrush icn when yu right-click text is the Frmat Painter, which yu can use t cpy the frmatting yu ve already dne and apply it t the new text. Just highlight the text with the frmat yu like, then highlight the text yu want t change. Open a blank presentatin. This is ging t be where yu design yur pster. Under the Design tab, click n Slide Size and g t Custm Slide Size : The size f ur psters is ging t be 16 x24. Yu can set this by adjusting the numbers in the width and height areas. Sme f yu may want yur pster t be riented vertically, while thers may want t rient it hrizntally. In the Custm Slide Size pp-up yu can dictate hw yu want it riented, just ensure that yu set the prper height and width (regardless f hw yu rient it:16 =shrt side, 24 =lnger side). Cngrats! Yu shuld nw have ne slide with the dimensins 16 x24! GO TO THE VIEW TAB AND CHECK THE BOXES FOR RULER, GRIDLINES, + GUIDES ; this will help yu stay rganized and aids in keeping things parallel. At any pint nw, yu can chse t insert text bxes by ging t the Insert tab and clicking n text bx. Frm this pint yu can begin t insert yur research and any images that yu want included. Ggle is yur friend, when it cmes t finding images. On Ggle, find the advanced search under the settings tab. This will allw yu t find any and all images related t yur tpic; mre imprtantly it will allw yu t specifically search fr images with higher reslutin, specifically Larger than 1024x768. IT IS CRUCIAL THAT YOU USE IMAGES WITH HIGH RESOLUTION, OTHERWISE YOU RISK HEAVY PIXELATION AFTER IT HAS BEEN PRINTED. Once yu ve have cmpleted yur search, yu will be able t hver ver specific images n Ggle and see exactly what their reslutin is. Once yu have lcated an image that yu wuld like t include, g ahead and save image as t a desired lcatin n yur cmputer. ONCE YOU HAVE ALL/ANY PICTURES SAVED, YOU CAN BEGIN TO TRANSFER THEM TO YOUR POSTER. Yu can simply click and drag phts frm the save file nt yur pster, r yu can g t the Insert tab and click n Pictures. PICTURES CAN BE EDITED BY RIGHT CLICKING THEM AND

5 CHOOSING FORMAT PICTURE. Under the Size and Prperties tab, it tells yu the exact size, in inches, the image is n yur pster. This can be a useful tl in helping yu negtiate space and rganize yur pster. YOU CAN VIEW YOUR PROGRESS BY STARTING THE SLIDESHOW. Make sure t save regularly thrughut the prcess. When yu have finished, yu will want t make sure that yu save it as a PDF befre it is turned in. Tips fr prductin in Illustratr, Phtshp and GIMP: In PS, AI, and GIMP, yu can use layers. Layers turn digital painting int smething mre like cllage. These allw yu t manipulate individual elements f yur wrk withut bthering the thers n screen. Yu can use layer styles by duble-clicking n the layer in Phtshp and Illustratr. In Phtshp yu can use layer masks:. These create a separate, invisible layer n tp f yur current layer which uses tw clrs: white and black. Black, n the layer mask, erases the image in the wrking layer. White returns it. Think f it like putting invisible ink n smething and remving it at will. This serves t functin as an eraser withut erasing. If yu erase, yu lse data. If yu layer mask, yu hide data, and yu can return it at a whim. In PS, AI, and GIMP yu can make shapes using the shape tl r path tl in GIMP: By clicking and dragging yu can make rganic shapes, and by clicking pint t pint yu can make gemetric shapes. The shape tl is best fr making graphics. Online Tutrials: 1. Getting Started with Gimp 2.8 ~ Tutrials fr Beginners by Chris Tutrials is a gd start fr GIMP. 2.
