1 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 1 June 2016 Hats I ve Worn June 2016 Here s a riddle for you: What do you call a food-loving quilter who would forsake her guild for a whole month, forego the fabulous June potluck, and abandon her house and dog to a sitter, all to do temp work as a domestic servant? Answer: Grandma! That s got to be my favorite title ever. Being called Mom is still great, and I m fond of my true love s nicknames for me, with the exception of Dear, which invariably seems to follow Yes, with the expression uttered in a snarky tone that says, Stop nagging! For a few months in high school, I was proud to be a salesperson, because that job entitled me to pass through the employee entrance at Disneyland to peddle Mexican trinkets. After graduation, I took a leap to an internship that involved copy editing manuals for submarine and missile guidance systems. I couldn t tell a resistor from a capacitor, but I sure knew about commas, dangling modifiers and subject-verb agreement. Later I got to teach English as a Peace Corps Volunteer, held a variety of jobs as a journalist and much later became an English teacher again. Lately, the job that s filled my heart has been serving as your president. It s been great to have you respond to my pleas for help, express appreciation for my coordinating duties and monthly messages, and laugh in all the right places when I ve led meetings. To top it off, you collaborated to surprise me with the most beautiful quilt I could imagine. Nobody promises you a rose garden when you take on the guild presidency, but that s what I got, and it couldn t be more welcome. Did you know I have a purple thumb? I thank you for that wonderful gift and the privilege of working with you, as well as for keeping up our reputation as a friendly, welcoming group and helping it grow two achievements that are surely intertwined. As always, my hat s off to you, Carol Goodhue Shull Village Quilters president

2 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 2 June 2016 Use Your Words President s Challenge for I challenge you to make a small quilt incorporating words in some way. The deadline will be our June 2016 potluck, where participants can present their creations during Show and Tell time. Rules: You need to use at least two words, but there s no limit on how many you can use. The quilt should be no smaller than 8.5 inches by 11 inches and no larger than 40 inches by 40 inches. That means you could use your sweet words on a preemie quilt (28 inches by 42 inches) or a baby quilt for Gently Hugged (up to 40 inches by 40 inches). The words can be printed on the fabric by the manufacturer or put on printer-ready fabric with a computer printer; appliquéd; written in permanent marker, paint or permanent crayon; pieced; quilted; or with any other method that produces legible words. In deference to those with impeccable manners and delicate eyes and ears, choose only words that could be printed in a family newspaper. Examples: You could use fabric printed with holiday greetings or cute animal images interspersed with Woof or Meow. You could dream up an art quilt that makes a statement featuring a concept, slogan, quotation, lyric, bumper sticker saying or T-shirt message that inspires you. You could use words for a quilter to live by, such as this message on a T-shirt sold by Zazzle: Behind Every Good Quilter is a Huge Pile of Fabric. Prizes: None. This isn t a competition. I want you to feel free to choose your own words without regard to the popularity of the message. Also, I d like to make this as stress-free as possible.

5 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 5 June 2016 Special Projects What a very productive year we have had for donating beautiful quilts to our 3 charities. So many generous and talented quilters have contributed so much. I took a tally of the quilts we have given to our charities since September of 2015 through May Hidden Valley House has received 21 quilts and 3 crochet afghans Kaiser Special Care Nursery has received 78 quilts Gently Hugged has received 45 quilts 152 bibs and 92 knitted or crochet hats for the babies and children. Wow. Terrific job ladies. Again many thanks to the quilters, the fabric and batting donators, the knitters and the crocheters, bib makers, washcloth makers.. It is just amazing such a small wonderful, generous guild can produce so much. I have lots of kits made if you want to take a few for the summer. Cut remnant fabric into 6 inch squares if you need to get rid of infant or children s fabric. Quilt Sizes to make: Kaiser Special Care 32 by 42 inches Gently Hugged less than 40 by 40 inches Hidden Valley House anything goes... lap size, kids quilts & baby quilts Annie Mitchell Special Projects Chair

10 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 10 June 2016 Ways and Means A big thank you to all the members (and several brand new members!) who were so very helpful this past year with our Christmas boutique projects. We could not have done this without you. We really appreciate the enthusiasm and willingness to participate in this important fund raiser. It is a never ending mission, so we invite you to stop by once again this month and check out some items that could use a few stitches. Jeanie Braheme, Peggy Kollars, Margaret Cording, Deb McManus Capturing the Colors of California - Hues, Tints, Shades, and Tones... Call for quilts. As you know this exhibit will appear at Quiltfest Oasis Palm Springs, October 6-8, We want to ensure that we have quilts from guilds all over Southern California. Consequently, to give you more time to create your entry and/or enter an existing quilt, we have extended the entry deadline to August 1, We are also removing the size constraint. If you have a quilt that captures the Colors of California, we would like to include it! The entry form and information have been updated on the SCCQG website. For more details, please go to SCCQG.org. Questions? Contact the exhibit curator, Stephania Bommarito, quiltwizard1024@gmail.com Modern Quilts: Redesigning Traditions at the Ontario Museum of History and Art Before the busy summer season is upon us all, we want to take the opportunity to remind you and your "quilty" friends that May 1 marked the beginning of acceptance of applications for entries to Modern Quilts: Redesigning Traditions at the Ontario Museum of History and Art. You still have plenty of time to finish your projects, of course, as the deadline has been moved to August 15, but we here at the museum thought a small reminder might be a good thing. Detailed information, applications and guidelines are available from Georgeanna Hawley at : ghawley@ontarioca.gov<mailto:ghawley@ontarioca.gov> Please share this reminder with your guild members and friends. Our organization in Scripps Ranch has received a couple of boxes of donated fabric, and since it s mostly polyester blends and a wool blend or two in large enough cuts to be used for clothing, plus some lining fabric and some lace trim, I thought it might be useful to your students.
