1 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 1 April 2017 April 2017 I ve been thinking warm and fuzzy thoughts about our guild all week, and while this is usually a topic for the end of a year, I think it is a good time to say a special thank you to all you wonderful women who make our guild such a welcoming place. I appreciate the smiles I see when standing on the stage to start the meeting. I appreciate the concern you all have when I and the other quilt-holders are trying to maneuver around the speaker in order to hold up a quilt. We haven t broken our necks yet, though clearly we are a distraction to the front row! We ll make sure to give ourselves more room to move around the next two speakers. I appreciate the enthusiasm you each have shown in creating charity quilts and working on kits for the holiday boutique. I m in awe of your energy and productivity and of your beautiful work. I love, too, how ready you are to help when someone is stumped with a project. I appreciate the new friends I ve made at retreats and on the board, and my long time friends who encouraged me to join the guild. Special thanks to Peggy Kollars for shooing me out the door and taking over during the March meeting. Turns out I had walking pneumonia! I haven t had the chance to get to know more of you, but look forward to doing so in the next months and next year. And I encourage you to get more involved with the guild, volunteer to run a committee or just to help, and make some new friends along the way. Jennifer Williams, President

2 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 2 April 2017 Programs On April 8th we are delighted to have Debbie Gordon as our speaker. She specializes in bringing new life to traditional patterns with creative arrangements and inventive color and fabric choices. She is the author of two books, Patches of Glory and Sweet Dreams Heirloom Quilts for Babies. As one of her many honors, she was named as a California Living Treasure, as part of the California Quilt Heritage Project. Debbie has also been on Simply Quilts episode 528. The April workshop has been canceled. On May 13 th, our guest speaker is Cindy Myers. Cindy s expertise is in foundation piecing. After taking a class with Judy Niemeyer she fell in love with Judy s technique and organized process and is very excited to be a Judy Niemeyer Certified Instructor. Offering programs to draw current and prospective members will help our guild to grow. Between September and June, we usually plan on a total of six speakers which includes four workshops. 1. On a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest level of interest, how interested are you in a program by a professional organizer on how to organize your sewing room? 2. Which of these topics are you most interested in learning about through a lecture and / or workshop? Traditional piecing Traditional blocks made with modern fabrics Modern quilting Paper piecing Art quilts Strip piecing Applique Embellishments and other surface design Wool felting Special effects with color Antique quilts Foundation piecing Machine quilting Thread painting with a machine 3. If you can use a computer, you can do this as it is all taken care of through Word Press software. Village Store Manager. The Village Store can be anything you want it to be.

Neither require much of a time commitment, but both offer ample opportunities for creativity. Website Manager. Our website, needs to be updated each month with the newsletter uploaded, and information on speakers and workshops added. If you can use a computer, you can do this as it is all taken care of through Word Press software. Village Store Manager. The Village Store can be anything you want it to be. Each month, people drop off piles of fabric and stacks of books and patterns. You can sort it, price it, and market it as you d like, selling certain items one month or another, or just having it be like a garage sale and let people dig through what is there. All the money raised goes to the guild to pay for our speakers. The one requirement is that you have space to store several boxes of fabric at a time, but on the plus side, you get to be the first to sort through all that wonderful yardage! All members are encouraged to invite guests to our guild meetings. Each member can invite one guest during the year without paying the guest fee! So think of someone you know who might enjoy our guild, and invite him or her to join us!

We sent: 38 bibs to Gently Hugged, along with 9 quilts 5 quilts to Hidden Valley House 6 quilts to Kaiser special care So many people to thank and I apologize if I forget someone. Thank you Eleanor, Diana, Mary, Tina, Maggie, Jeannie, Nancy, Linda, Peggy, Evon, and I am sure many others. Nancy Laursen and Maggie Forys Hospitality Co-Chairs Reminder: Village Quilters 2017 Spring Challenge: Postcards! The idea for this challenge comes from the San Diego Quilt Show in September, where the theme and challenge is Postcards from San Diego. Making postcards is quick and easy, and meant to be creative and fun. I m hoping that this guild challenge will inspire some of you to enter your creations in the Quilt Show! Postcards must be 5 X 7 and made out of fabric. Other details -- the batting, quilting, binding is entirely the creator s choice. Just like a real postcard, one side should have the image, the other side an address and short message. You can use fabric paint or pens for this or print something onto fabric. Postcards are due at our last meeting on June 10th. We will display them and perhaps vote for our favorite. Most important of all, though, have fun!

It s what Lea Day says at the beginning of any of her tutorials hope she doesn t mind that I m borrowing it for my opening. It just seems so appropriate. April a month of so many things! Spring planting and taxes (hee hee) and Easter. Quilting lighthearted floral quilts, bunny quilts, just quilts And to help you along with the spring theme, this month s fabric exchange color is PAS- TELS!! Soft prints, solids, whatever you think pastel means to you. Last month we has 12 fat quarters brought in. One member brought hers in and wanted her name in the drawing to win a stack. The others went to a surprise winner. While several ladies just like to share the wealth and not put their names in to win, it is certainly fun to have more that want to get some IN EXCHANGE. I love seeing the looks on the winners faces regardless. What would be even more fun would be to see a quilt (small or large), a table topper, a wall hanging, or even a table runner made from the bundles you win. Sound like a good idea? Well, that ties into my opening statement highlighting the quilt tutorials. There are so many out there! Inspiration galore! Could be that it might even inspire a few ladies to sign up for Block of the Month for next year with these fabrics and these tutorials hint, hint. How say you? Game on? Lynnell would love it! Last month the blocks were brought by Kathy Greene and were won by Mary Lewis s daughter. The blocks for March were brought by Anne Mitchell. For April Lynnell will be donating the blocks and for May they will be brought by Sharon Ainsworth. In June I will have sign ups for next year so be thinking about when you might like to bring blocks. If you have not tried it this might be the time! 10 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 10 April 2017 RETREAT VINA DE LESTONNAC OCTOBER 27-OCTOBER 29, 2017 This year s Retreat will be at Vina De Lestonnac Retreat Center in Temecula. Check-in time begins at 9:00 am on Friday, October 27, Check-out is Sunday at 2:00 pm. Your registration fee includes lunch and dinner Friday; breakfast, lunch, and dinner Saturday; and Brunch on Sunday. The Retreat Center provides coffee, tea and water daily. Feel free to bring snacks to share in the sewing room. We have reserved 7 double-occupancy rooms, and 3 single occupancy rooms, allowing 17 retreat participants. Registration began at the Guild meeting on February 11, 2017 for current active members. Please be aware that the Guild is under contract and obligated to pay for 17 attendees for the Retreat. Therefore, your NON-REFUNDABLE deposit obligates you to pay the ENTIRE registration fee even if you have to cancel, unless you can find someone else to take your place. A NON-REFUNDABLE deposit of $150 will reserve your spot, with your NON-REFUNDABLE balance due no later than September 9, 2017 (Guild meeting). Non-members are eligible to register for any remaining spots in September.
