1 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 1 February 2017 February 2017 Share the love The stores are filled with heart shaped balloons, boxes of chocolates and lots of red and pink cards it must be February! Valentine s Day is here, time to celebrate love. We quilters, of course, don t need a calendar to remind us to spread the love. It just comes naturally! And our guild is especially good at spreading love to those in need in our community, through the almost 150 quilts we make and donate each year. We have touched families with babies in the Kaiser Special Care Nursery, given warmth to victims of domestic violence at Hidden Valley House and added a special touch to the needy families being assisted by Gentle Hugged. This month s meeting is all about these charity quilts. It s a sit and sew, and what could be better than working with friends on projects for such a good cause? We will have our regular meeting starting at 10:00, with show and tell, and block of the month and announcements, and then we will start sewing. 2 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 2 February 2017 Programs We are all looking forward to our next guild meeting on February 11 th. Philanthropy or Quilting for Charity. Whatever you call it, it s what we quilters love and are meant to do. It s a great way to spend time chatting and getting to know other guild members. In addition, I always come away learning something valuable and feeling good. Hope to see everyone in February. (See page 5, for details) Our March speaker, Claudia Dallas Gomez, will help you fine tune your eye for color. She has a BFA in Design and 25 years of experience in commercial interiors. She then took her visualization skills in graphic design and color and applied it to fabric. Claudia will be sharing lots of ideas at her COLORstory lecture, by exploring color theory, color influence and 7 types of color contrast. If you struggle with fabric choices when it is time to make another quilt and if you are curious about modern quilting, this is the lecture you want to attend. Claudia Dallas Gomez Claudia s workshop, titled The French Door, will follow our guild meeting. We will then take her COLORstory lecture a step further by applying it to fabric. A hands-on exploration of color, improvisation and design techniques. We will view each others stash and discuss how each fabric influences the next. Blocks will be made from 6 7 different fabrics. Please see attached supply list. Cost includes an instruction booklet : $45 for members / $55 non-members In April we are delighted to have Debbie Gordon as our speaker. She specializes in bringing new life to traditional patterns with creative arrangements and inventive color and fabric choices. She is the author of two books, Patches of Glory and Sweet Dreams Heirloom quilts for babies. As one of her many honors, she was named as a California Living Treasure, as part of the California Quilt Heritage Project. Debbie has also been on Simply Quilts episode 528. Debbie s workshop, titled Peek-a-Boo Bright Hopes, also follows our guild meeting. She will focuses on a perfect frame for those cute novelty prints which will also create a dynamic woven design. You ll learn easy fussy-cutting, a terrific assembly method plus lots of tips and tricks. She will be sending us a sample along with a supply list so look for it in our next blast or VQ newsletter. Cost is $40 for members and $50 for non-members. 5 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 5 February 2017 Quilting for Charity Saturday - February, 11th, pm or longer if we like I have completed nearly 50 kits for our charities. I hope someone shows up. Its lots of fun. A great way to spend time chatting and learning to know the members.. There will be a few binding projects (not many). Lots of opportunity to cut 6 inch squares from donated fabric. I have lots of new fabric from Quilters Paradise (Sue Mezera) donated to use for backs or charity projects. What to Bring: ; Big smile and ready to sew ; Sewing machine and supplies ; Rotary Cutter and mat ; An Extension Cord ; Something to add to a salad I will have irons and ironing boards. Lots of kits, fabric and batting. Salad greens and Chili. It will be a great day especially if lots of quilters show up. Thank you! Annie Mitchell Special Projects Chairperson

6 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 6 February 2017 Special Projects You ladies continue to amaze me with your very generous hearts and creative hands. We had 14 quilts donated this month. 99 beautiful tiny preemie and children knitted caps. WOW. You creative knitters have been busy. 50 of the tiniest went to Kaiser and 49 went to Gently Hugged for the newborn layettes. Just amazing. Thank you so very much. Mary Lewis also made us 19 beautiful flannel bibs for Gently Hugged. I received a letter from, Kasaan Hammon, Vision Promotion Director of Camp Alandale. I will share it with you: "We are writing to you hoping Village Quilters might consider contributing quilts to our Woven Quilt Drive for It is our hope in 2017 to send every child who attends camp home with a quilt of their own. Our campers have been removed from their families and homes. They often show up at camp with clothes in a trash bag and no bedding for camp While we provide what is needed while they are at camp, it would mean so much to a child to leave camp with a quilt of their own as a continuing reminder that they are loved." The letter is very long but they describe the camp as a Christian camp in the San Bernardino Mountains near Big Bear and they serve foster kids age Camp is free for the kids supported by 100% donations. Quilts can be any size between lap and full size. Not queen or bigger. The kids are 9-18, boys and girls. Fabrics can be girl, boy or unisex with themes of love and encouragement, Biblical verses or symbols, sports, arts or nature. The leadership would come to a meeting and tell quilters a little about the program and the kids they work with. They would pick up the quilts. I was thinking of only a commitment of 10 or 12 quilts. So far we have only had a few sign ups, so we would love to have some more in February. We will bring some kits to the Feb meeting. And we are looking for pot holders and mug rugs that can be made from scraps. The holiday boutique will be here before we know it. Looking forward to the February meeting. Nancy Laursen and Maggie Forys Hospitality Co- Chairs Announcing the Village Quilters 2017 Spring Challenge: Postcards! The idea for this challenge comes from the San Diego Quilt Show in September, where the theme and challenge is Postcards from San Diego. Making postcards is quick and easy, and meant to be creative and fun. I m hoping that this guild challenge will inspire some of you to enter your creations in the Quilt Show! Postcards must be 5 X 7 and made out of fabric. Other details -- the batting, quilting, binding is entirely the creator s choice. Just like a real postcard, one side should have the image, the other side an address and short message. You can use fabric paint or pens for this or print something onto fabric. Postcards are due at our last meeting on June 10th. We will display them and perhaps vote for our favorite. Most important of all, though, have fun! Jennifer Williams President

Fabric Exchange It's me, Karen, your Fabric Exchange elf. The color of the month is shock!! Red or pink. Who'd have thought? I've been giving it some thought, and have come up with a new way of picking winners for the fat quarters. I'd like to see more members participate...at the same time accepting all fat quarters that others bring in and don't want to be chosen. There will be 2, maybe 3 stack of fabric. Also, 2 bags for names. One bag will have the names of those who bring in fabric and want to be in the drawing for fabrics; and the other bag for names of guests and new members. Sound like a good idea? We'll give it a try...so bring in those colors, ladies. And remember, green is the color for March. Karen K

10 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 10 February 2017 Block of the Month Hasn't this been the wettest month ever??? At least in recent years. I know everyone was sick of it, but it beats the drought getting worse. And did you see that gorgeous rainbow on Monday evening? There was a picture of a full double rainbow over Ocean Beach in The Reader - how I wish I could cut and paste it. Back to the business at hand - December block of the month submitted by Rebecca White was won by Carol Yuiska. Kathy Green provided January's BOM and all the kits were purchased. Keep your fingers crossed to win it ladies. February's block will be brought by Karen (me). March is Annie Mitchell We do have April and May signed up for...but we'd like you to be thinking about next year's sign ups now. That will give you ladies several months to prepare. Lynnell will not be at the February meeting, so I'll be sitting in for her. See you in February!! Check-in time begins at 9:00 am on Friday, October 27, Check-out is Sunday at 2:00 pm. Your registration fee includes lunch and dinner Friday; breakfast, lunch, and dinner Saturday; and Brunch on Sunday. The Retreat Center provides coffee, tea and water daily. Feel free to bring snacks to share in the sewing room. We have reserved 7 double-occupancy rooms, and 3 single occupancy rooms, allowing 17 retreat participants. Registration begins at the Guild meeting on February 11, 2017 for current active members. Please be aware that the Guild is under contract and obligated to pay for 17 attendees for the Retreat. Therefore, your NON-REFUNDABLE deposit obligates you to pay the ENTIRE registration fee even if you have to cancel, unless you can find someone else to take your place. A NON-REFUNDABLE deposit of $150 will reserve your spot, with your NON-REFUNDABLE balance due no later than September 9, 2017 (Guild meeting).
